get ready for another round, guys (timepass panna venaam:-))]. no IR or ARR bashing, please, muthallaye sollitten. let's just discuss how each of them has used various instruments. for instance, IR's use of acoustic guitar is unparalleled, while ARR rarely uses it. similarly, IR `pales' before ARR when it comes to electric guitar or keyboards (strictly IMHO, everyone's welcome to disagree). start shooting.

Base guitar was the only instrument used in the song.

There is a remarkable software that can
help learn/recreate indian instrument sounds.
Please have a look at:
www.swarsystems.com
(I am not their marketeer. Just a music/software
enthusiast!)

rjay, srikanth et al. Have you guys used/using or checked our Sonic Foundry software. I find the mp3 samples which people upload on acidplanent.com to be very impressive. BTW, here is something I observed lately re: ARR's music.
1) Usage of keyboards for playing instruments like flute gives him an edge. Usually, I think, a flute is not used like a keyboard and so only certain kinds of music is written for it. For eg. where IR would use a violin ARR can use a flute (guessing here). because he can play it on keyboard easily whereas a real flute player might have difficulty playing this. Can music savvy person verify my theory ?
2) Use of drum machine gives the flexibility of tuning the drum sound differently every time. (Okay, this is obvious but I thought I would bring it out.) In the case of IR, real instruments are used, not much variety is there. Even though he tried to introduce different instruments now and then. Still this leads to listener ennui.

On the contrary imaging playing a song like ennavalae's opening flute sequence in keyboard. I think only the real one can give that output.

kiru,
regarding the usage of drums, IR lacks variety 'cos he uses just the actual drums, while ARR has this complemented by drum kits/drum pads/and modules that are available in the latest synthesisers....this gives added variety, and some unusual sounds that are very interesting to listen to.

Sonic Foundry's software range is groundbreaking.
They have a wide range - from wave editors
(Sound Forge),
to software based hard disk recorder(Vegas Pro).
ANd they have microphone modelers and so on.
They have a loop-based music maker ACID (library
of loops -sax riffs, beats, guitar riffs, etc)
which can be pulled together to make a mix.
THis is what I think is uploaded on acidplanet.com
(I have not visited there yet).
I used their wave editor Sound Forge recently
to mix my song and was impressed with its
abilities and performance and quality. I have
seen ACID (v1.0) demo in action long back, it was
impressive, even though I dont think you can
call the resultant music original. It can be
fun, and remixing is a tiny step towards
composing and one can learn a lot about
what goes together with what and about song
structures.
Also, you can still
use it to create original songs (if you create
your own loops).
Also, Kiru, Can you send a mail to me?

a learning directive ;)

Folks,
In Alaipayuthe movie, the scene where Shalini and Madhavan marries each other the "Mangalliyam Thandhuthanee" slogam is tuned in a Modern Pop Style. DId anyone crave for this kind of a change. What a pity?.

I also wish to add that the "Alaipayuthe" song in the same movie is sung very well by Kalyani Menon & Co. The first time I heard it I could make out a professional touch to that song. Then my friend told me that its none other than Dir. Rajeev Menon's mother

Kalyani menon's son, I think is Unni Menon,
the singer. I am not sure if Rajiv is also
her son.

Rjay,
May be you are right. Kalyani Menon has also sung a short song in KKKK which is not part of the CD track. I think its is Raag Desh. That also made me to believe that she is Rajeev Menon's mother.

Ragapriyan!
`regarding the usage of drums, IR lacks variety 'cos he uses just the actual drums'....Have you really listened to IR's music before writing this comment?
Please, for music's sake, listen to some of his fusion songs before making such sweeping statements... (immediate example that comes to my mind is `thoongAtha vizhikaL rendu' in agni*, listen to the saranam...)
Talking about ARR giving some `unusual sounds' in percussion, it may be unusual to folks who do not listen to any western pop at all... but for those who frequent channels like V & MTV, most of them is quite ordinary...may be you call the `lottu' `thattu' of tabla etc. here-and-there-in-between `unusual'?

Eden,
I think ragapriyan is referring to the variety in terms of 'sound', not necessarily various kinds of drums. Atleast, that is what I meant in my original post and I understood ragapriyan's point to be a reiteration of that. I cannot make out beats so I will not comment on that. But I can tell to some extent that IR has used tabla/mridangam with drums much earlier in a fusion kind of way.

Hi,
Just thought of sharing this with all of you. This is about the "Annan enna thambi enna" (by Yesudas) from DHARMADURAI. I have noticed a very unique thing in the first interlude. It starts with a keyboard sound (I assume so), then the violin/cello/viola is used with breaks of this keyboard sound, after which the violin/cello/viola backdrop takes over which starts from a low note to a high note, followed again by violin/cello/voila backdrop, but this time it is accompanied by the same keyboard sound. Now observe the way this keyboard sound takes turns in this place and comes back to the original sound (whatever I explained is within the first 26 seconds of the first interlude). I hope you will get what I am referring to. I felt its very interesting. I have been amazed by this piece for a long time, but now I was hearing this song again and hence thought will immediately share with you (before I forget).

I was listening to the album "Kali" a rajni movie of the early 80s scored by IR. The music for the song "Thithikkum" by SPB and SP Shailaja is just outstanding. It has amazing guitar usage (it starts of with guitar music) and has great use violins and sax. This, IMO, was a song far ahead of its time.
Also, there was a discussion here previous about the use of chorus. The song "Adi aadu poongiliye" sung by malaysia vasudevan in the same movie has great usage of chorus.

Dorai:
IMO, maangalyam thanthunaane's version in AP is rather very apt and innovative. The regular version probably would have spoiled the mood of the situation. Here's a modern youngsters marrying in an unusual(!) way...hence the unusual tune for maangalyam thanthunaane.
