new Indian express review Baba
Baba: different songs for superstar Rajini
There is only one thing that is more eagerly awaited by the superstar’s fans than the audio release of his film’s music. And that is the film itself.
For Baba it was no different. Even before its’ release, the music album was the subject of many a controversy - including the idea to introduce advance reservation through coupons sold at theatres.
Many of the die-hard fans waited for hours in long queues to get their coupons, only because they wanted to hear the film’s music as soon as it released. But it was not to be. The audio cassettes hit the music stores first instead, taking many fans by surprise. Some were hurt. Many were disappointed - but it can’t be with the quality of the music. It is one of the best in recent times by A R Rahman. But then, of course, it is difficult to satisfy the superstar’s fans as they always feel that the music director could have done a better job. It was the same with Baba. However, one mustn’t forget one rule as far as A R Rahman’s music is concerned. If you like the album at the first hearing, it will be a hit. If you don’t, it will be a superhit.
The first track in the album is the Baba Theme or Ekamevadhivitheeyam, which is just two minutes long. It is not hugely innovative - it’s easy to peg it as inspired to some degree by Ennio Morricone’s Al Capone score in the gangster movie Untouchables. But it marks a refreshing departure from the heavy stuff that one usually hears in a Rajinikant movie.
In most of the superstar’s recent films, his introduction is usually through a song. Earlier, it was easy to say which track will introduce him, but in Baba it is only after listening to the entire album can we say with a certain amount of confidence that the honour will go to Dippu...Dippu sung by Shankar Mahadevan. It is also after a long time that someone other SP Balasubramaniam is singing the intro song. But Shankar Mahadevan doesn’t disappoint and his full-throated delivery adds more life to an already peppy song.
The best song is Baba Kichchu. No one but SPB could have sung this track with so much elan and the ebullient energy with which he modulates his voice effortlessly through the track makes one want to keep listening to it. Also, the lyrics by Vairamuthu are good and funny but full of political overtones - one reason why it will go down well with the fans. Side B opens with Maya Maya, a fast number sung with racy beats and an excellent chorus. The lyrics by Valee are really good, especially the lines Thamarai ellei meil neer polla nee thotum thodaamal irru (crudely translated it means: like water on a lotus leaf, be in touch but don’t get involved).
Rajyammaa is another very good song and Jayachandran’s voice haunts you long after the track is over. This song was recently criticised by many followers of Periyar, who alleged that the lyrics were defamatory. It is said that some verses of the song have now been changed. A R Rahman has proved through this song that, when it comes to simple compositions that have lasting effect, there is none to match him. Sakthi Kodu, which comes last, is a devotional song and will be well-appreciated by Carnatic music buffs. Karthik has rendered this song well and the lyrics by Vairamuthu are also good.
The songs of Baba may be flyweight when compared to the music of other Rajinikant films, but they score over the rest through sheer melody. A must buy.

There is one more thing i would like to talk to ARR fans. I expect you guys to come out with your own review instead of cutting and pasting the reviews. After that all this review was reviewed by just one person. What is the credibility of this reviewer? Is he a genius? I see lots of ARR fans trying desperately cutting and pasting reviews all across internet. They do it multiple times to create an illusion that this album is worthy enough. I went through all the old pages.
There were just 3 reviews each has been posted like 7 times each which give you a total of 21 reviews. IR fans are doing their part in pasting the links. Somebody is cutting and pasting the links of BABA movie news. I don't know what this is to do witih BABA music review. 90% of the people talk anything but BABA songs. Let us not stoop to such low levels. Who are you guys trying to settle scores with?

I think you havent counted right. I can name at least 7 people who have posted independent reviews (good and bad) including myself. Please recheck your numbers.
I think it is better to quote from published newspapers / magazines than give own opinions, because those reviewers are paid to do this job and they are professionals, reviewing movies day in and day out.
Since you might have started posting in this thread late, please note that this thread is the one point for all Baba information in this forum, and that includes the music too. This has been the case since April.
Again your claim that 90% of the people talk anything but Baba songs is not true. That would mean that I (by myself ) am equal to almost 90% of the people posting in this thread which is not true, since I am the main culprit posting Baba news, be it music or otherwise.
I will stop posting news if the majority of the people here do not want to see news link on here.

IK, please continue to post the reviews. These stupid IR fans(Vayatherichal) will not like them. Ask them to go to hell. IR will have to drink ARR's urine to learn music.

I agree with you LK they are paid to do their jobs. But he is still an individual. he would have his own interests. So i am absolutely not sure if it is not biased. Moreover it is upto the listener to judge if it is good or not. Nowadays standard of reviews has gone down. Vikatan used to give marks to each movie those days.
Anything above 50 means it is really good
Example Sirai 56, Achamillai Achamillai 60, Thanneer Thanneer 60, Mudhal Mariyaddai 54, Sindu Bhairavi 55, Udhiri Pookkal 60... etc. Look at nowadays. Lots of people appreciate substandard movies like tamizh and tamizhan. Not only the movies and music standard is going down. Also the standard of reviews is also going down. I would rather trust my ears than someone else's. It ultimately boils down how well i like it. It is not how well the reviewer asks me to like it.
Hope you understand the difference. I didn't target anybody in particular. I just generally said discussion was way off the base most of the time. So instead of throwing mud on each other, just focus on the review part. It is a futile exercise to analyze who is at the top who is not.
Anywayz hope in future people stick to topic

I am sure this kind of statements can only be made by desperate IR fans. If you revisit all ARR threads then you will know the standard of IR fans. Whatever said by that statement just convey the message but true ARR fan would have said it in a better way. so its very poor standard.

SP Bala has been wasted in such an insignificant song. He barely has a few lines. This is an utter disgrace and dis respectful!
This just proves how humble SPB is by singing this song!
AR Rahman sort your self out!
I would expect better from the maestro! i am thoroughly disgusted
