Song of the Day: puththam puthu paattu vandhaa from thendral.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/puththamputhupaattu.rm
- Ellaarukkum iniya pongal vaazhthukkaL!!!
- Sung by Pushpavanam Kuppusamy and S.P.B. Music by Vidhyasagar. Lyrics by Vairamuththu.
- This is the latest film of 'oLi Oviyar' Thankar Bachchaan, after Azhagi and Solla Marantha Kadhai. Both these films were unconventional and refreshingly different. I hope Thankar continues in the same vein and gives us something other than a run-of-the-mill story. I am not sure whether this movie is getting released for Pongal. The trailor for this movie is already being shown regularly in Sun TV.
- The movie stars Parthiban and Uma (Sumithra's daughter). Parthiban plays NalankiLLi, a writer who takes up social issues and faces hurdles because of his beliefs. Apparently, this character was inspired by Jayakanthan. One can see Parthiban sporting a moustache similar to that of Jayakanthan's in one of the photos.
- This song has an artist playing 'paRai' and singing. The start of the song itself caught my attention. As the artist is paying his respects, he sings:
vaNakkam vaNakkam vaNakkam
naan vaazhum bhoomikkum vaNakkum
irukkO illiyO theriyaathu (a pregnant pause here) oru vELai irundhaa saamikkum vaNakkam!
and finishes off paying his respects with this great line:
naan paRai kottath thOlu thandha maattukkum thaan vaNakkam!
The lyrics continues to be interesting, with lines like:
paattu ennum sannal vazhi thaandavak kOnE
en pazhaiyak kaalam theriyudhadaa thaandavak kOnE!
The ending of the song is a poignant one. The artist is probably on his last leg, or the time has come to bid farewell and leave (metaphorically or physically). The final lyrics goes like this:
en paattan muppaantangaLOda pOyi sErap pOrEn
ippo naan marupadiyum amma garbap paiyile paduththukkittEn
ellaarum ammavOda vayiththukkuLLE irukkumbOdhu theriyumaamE oru iruttu
adhu ippO enakku theriyudhu
kadhakadhappaa irukku
naan marupadiyum poRandhu varuvEndaa!
baththiramaa paaththukkunga
en paRaiya!
- This song is the best effort by Pushpavanam Kuppusaamy so far, and he should get a big break if this song gets some attention.
- S.P.B comes into the picture only in the last segment of the song. I felt that Thankar probably could have used a different voice, a more rustic voice.
- Other songs in this movie are also good, especially 'PachchaikkiLi pachchaikkiLi' by Karthik. Overall, a good album by Vidyasagar.

Saravanan, there was a popular song in Ilangai Vaanoli in late 70s sung by Sujatha Athanayake(?) which goes like - anbuLLam ondru serntha nalla naaLL, invarum naaLLellaam inbanaaLL... was it a movie song or goes into the pop category ?

read somewhere:
The recording of paRai and other instrumental sounds were recorded in a different way.
All instrumentalists formed a circle and the recorder was placed in the middle, to get realistic music. Thangar felt recording everything seperately and mixing would not give the same effect.

Read in one of Thankar's Interview that VS wanted a mumbai singer( Udit Narayan ) to sing this song, they werent happy with his pronounciation or the way he sang, they finally decided that a "Mannim maindan" only can sing this song and hence Pushpavanam was invited. VS oda Udit mogam eppo dhan mudiyum.

Why am I not surprised with Vidyasagar's intention in the first place? Luckily, Udit Narayan didn't sing this song. I hate to even think about it :)

Vairamuthu's lyrics and Kuppusami's voice give this song an authentic rustic flavour. Read somehere that Vidyasagar employed musicians
who were trained in these rural instruments. Good choice, bb!
geeth, I don't recall that song of Sujatha Athanayake that you mention. Sujatha's songs like 'naan pooppole kaatile thaniye' and 'aadi sellum kaviri nadhiye, paadi sellu paavaiyin geetham' were also featured on Radio Ceylon often. She had a very sweet voice, with a Jikki-like quaint quiver. She was the daughter of old-time Sri Lankan actress Vimalakantha ( Margaret Pereira). I believe Sujatha, besides singing in Singhalese and Tamil films, has also composed music for several films.
Udhaya / OISG: Here's a link to the song I had mentioned earlier:'kaaladevan leelaigalo'(SPB/VJ), composed by Khemadasa for the unreleased film Vasanthathil Oru Vaanavil.

Interesting song. The ‘Vanakkam sequence’ reminds me vividly of the 'Kadhamba Comics' which used to be staged in many places in and around Madurai. All these stage shows use to start with a long ‘Vanakkam’ song which would sometimes go as long as 15 to 20 minutes (the full show would go on for more than six hours!). The artist would be so creative and spontaneous to address his ‘Vanakkam’ to whatever that came to his mind!
Saravanan,
Is there a site where I could listen to the popular 'poppisai pAdalgaL' ('Pattu mAmiyE...', 'Ay bUy mInakshi', 'O vandikArA...' etc) ?

Saravanan
That was a nice song, simple!.But Mr.Khmedasa could have been introduced to us with an even better song in the category of "Oru Paarvai".
Any ideas about
1.VadaikatRu veesugugindra kaalathile
2.Vaanavillin niram ezhu vaLainthey neLiyum azhagenna

Looks, it should have been a great song. Some flute like tunes in the middle(in AR. Rahman's style) is not fitting. The way SPB comes in the end and sings, is horrible, doesn't fit. I think Kuppusamy has done very good job!

Song of the Day: antharangam yaavumE from aayiram nilavE vaa.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/antharangam.rm
- Sung by SPB. Not sure who the MD is, the second interlude seems to have Ilayaraja's stamp on it. Further, "dEvathai iLam dEvi" is another song from the same film, and that seems to be an IR song too.
- A song that one can listen to again and again just to enjoy the way SPB has sung this song. Check out the various teasing ways with with he says "eppadi eppadi". Sheer delight for SPB fans.
- Whenever I hear this song, I wonder whether SPB punched in the "eppadi eppadi" refrain separately, or sang it along with the general song. I think it would have been difficult to do it all in one go.
