Maniratnam who revolutionized tamil movies with his best efforts like Mounaragam, Nayakan, Agninatchathram, Iruvar, Roja etc. recently come out with Kannathil Muthamittal.
Everybody Nayagan was a lift from God Father and he used some of the scenes from GF for his agninatchathram as well.
I thought Kannathil Muthamittal is his original thought alas its inspired from "Secrets and Lies"
British movie.

If the plot or one unusual things could make you guys think that it is a CTRL+C and CTRL+V.
What about Deep Impact and Armageddon. Same theme, same idea...then do u call it copy?
Even when copying goes around, normally the Directors want to perfect it. That's all.
It's like Bahgyaraj finishing MGR's Avasara Police 100 or sort of...
come on...think ahead...........

First of all, I didn't mention about "Kutti" movie in my posting in this thread, my apologies for that, but I don't know if you saw my posting in one of the other threads about the "kutti" movie review. I did write about "Kutti" sometime back, and did a bit of PRO velai."Azhagi" I was told is a hit, also there has been enough PRO activity on this movie, at least I didn't see anybody discouraging or making negative statements about these movie, like how it is being done for KM movie.
Still, from my side, I hope I am not repeating, "Azhagi" is another good movie, with lots of nostalgic moments kindled about our own past with great BGM by IR, and terrific songs, worth watching.
2. "When MR wanted to MAKE MONEY FOR HIMSELF he produced his first movie Satryan starring the same pot belly Vijaykanth"
With no personal attacks intended on any one,
I do not know if "Kshathriyan" was a hit, and if it was a hit movie, I don't know if it deserved to be a hit ( some body can throw some light on this), If MR made money with Kshathriyan, the only way he could have made is by the movie being a hit movie, again as I mentioned if the movie was a hit undeservingly, it speaks about again bad tastes of people, also, "who really cares if MR made money using Vijaykanth or Rajinikanth, bottomline is how MR or any producer make money, the answer is simple only by people's final judgement, which depends a lot on their taste", if not MR some other producer would have made the money and are still making I guess.
What one has to say about "MR losing money from Iruvar with Mohanlal and Aish in lead roles", who in Tamil movie history could have thought of coming out with a movie based on somebody's lifestory whom we knew/know and presented in the best possible way.
Just to finish my comments,
"who do not want to make money?", I am sure all of us work hard everyday to make money, again, if the movie makers(who do not deserve to make money) are making money, it is because of the people who are making them rich (even some of the well informed citizens)
Sorry if I hurt anybody's feelings, just venting out after seeing people who spend lot of money buying tickets in black market( scalped) for some of those stupid movies.

KM was/is good. Accepted. But still imho, kutty and azhagi were much better. Regarding KadalPookal i too felt the same. if it had been earlier with IR, it would have been a bigger hit.
Common factors:
Kanathil Muthamittal & Kadal Pookal - NON Ilayaraja
Azhagi & Kutti - Ilayaraaja
Bottom line:
Only movies with Ilayaraja are good movies.

Bharath, I understand ur excitement.
I remember face/off quite vividly and remember having a strong emotional response to it and somewhere along thinking intensely about Puthiya Mugam. However, it's been a while since I watched PM. In fact I was still in hi sch when i watched it. But the good news is I have the vcd in my possession and will be making gd use of it during the easter break. Then I'll outline to u scene by scene all the similarities and then u can tell me the 4 simple words later, ok?
:-)

Bharath,
forgotten the 4 words?
When neutral fan outlined scene by scene his +/- schizo theories in the aalavandhan thread, u told him:
"in 4 simple words
U R A FOOL"
:-) gimme time and we'll discuss PM scene by scene as well.

yeah... and neutral fan finally had to post under a different name supporting his own posts..
talk about face-off .. neutral fan did a virtual face-off...
it was a pity to see him trying hard to convince his horrendous theory in public...
he is delusional ....if ever there was one..
waiting for your PM... and please look at that aalavandhan thread once more and remember what you should NOT say.. neutral fan has a treatise on that subject...

Mani ratnam has new ways of pandering to the sentimental public. He did so in 'Anjal', and i guess cannot resist from trying to solve world's problems. First it was the kashmir(Roja) problem, then our own home grown hindu-muslim problems(Bombay), some kind of north eastern India problems(Dil se) and in this new movie went south ( both physically and direction wise) to touch the srilankan problem.
In my opinion, he is an over rated director.. who did great job on 'nayagan' and i think he should stick to making of commercial movies like 'agni nachatiram'. i was watching this movie getting irritated at each pandering scene ( why do all troubled children in his movies aka anjali and amuda leave their hair and run around? There was even a ridiculous scene, part of the song, in which amuda is participating in a running match with her hair not tied up!! which school in india allows its students to do so.. i wonder). and also should all the heroines/child heroines have a song.. so typical of him to involve all the school running around one girl as if they do not have anything better to do..
The only saving grace to the movie was neat performances by Simran, Madhavan, and the lady whoc played Madhavan's sister. I was feeling better after seeing 'Alai Paayuthe'... that may be there is still some hope for ManiRatnam... but there is none ...
and when the two childern run away and go to Rameshwaram, the lady in the redcross is having a general chat with the two children instead of getting worried over the very obvious fact that they are not accompanied by any adults!!
i watched this movie yesterday night.. so the memory is still fresh in my mind.. i heard people clapping when 'manitanam' name appeared on the screen..and heard lot of sentimental 'pch..pch' as the troubled ( read arrogant, ungrateful) amuda goes through her self created mess. That's when it struck me... Maniratnam will always be considered great as long as we have people who judge movies by the name tags( iguess him being an MBA from a reputed place and that he speaks fluent english helps to a certain extent) and less by the narration, logic and some good simple story telling!!!

I dont understand you pattu. He goes through a gamut of topics for his movies, and you call that bad. When he starts making same kind of movies, you'll call him monotonous. So what if the girls' hair is not tied back, is it some kind of blunder? You are so desperately trying to find faults in his movie. Do you expect a girl to have her hair tied back all the time?
If you didnt notice, the song is about Amudha. So, he showed them running behind her. If it had been some Lakshmi or Raghu, the ppl would have been running behind them.
Let Amudha be arrogant and ungrateful. Do you think that all the people in this world are saints?
I def. dont agree with the fluent english part. How many interviews has he given totally in his life? And he doesnt even speak much. Just monosyllabic answers.

Kaushik,
Only his dialogues are monosyllabic :-)...he has indeed given quite a few verbose interviews. A few points which pattu made were true.
Mani's formula is simple, take a burning issue, weave a love story around it...and at the end of it a major break thro' happens thro' these non-entities affected by the problem !! One arvind swamy shouting his throat out in the middle of riots stops the riots and everybody turns nice....BULLS**T !!
I can appreciate if the movie ends with a solution to the problems of the protoganist and the folks around him/her. This guy instead of using just the backdrop, tries to get a solution for the problem thro' his characters..The way KM differs from his other movies is in this aspect and i liked the movie just for that.
regarding the kid....For her age her performance in darn good. BUT, she does overact in every frame she comes in. That's again bcos of mani. Kids in his movies act big. In reality, those ppl who applaud those scenes wud slap their kids if they were to try the same in reality !!
and yeah...the whole colony.school running after one girl is as idiotic...but that's a minor thing to be made a big issue.
Let him give a mouna ragam or iruvar (and now KM)..i'm happy...Let him for god's sake stop making pieces of nonsense like bombay, dilse and roja.

Another thing i noticed with kamal and mani is,
whenever they target a wider audience, though at times they may be commercially successful, they end up in making a junk movie.
mouna ragam/Iruvar wud NEVER appeal to these stupid hindi movie goers !! The actual blame shud go to the directors who moulded their taste.
So this guy tries a dilse.....BOMBs big-time !!
Kamal tries an ALavandhAn - bombs !!
salangai oli or rajapArvai wud never be successful with these guys. Neither wud movies like muLLum malarum or udhirippookkaL.
