Hi!
I am in the process of uploading some more songs of Ilaiyaraja. I am about to classify the foll. songs under the non-classical category, and thought there is no harm in asking you people first.
metti oli kARROdu from the film metti - is it sudhdha dhanyasi?
Which raga is 'oru kungumach chengamalam' set to? It sounds close to Gowri Manohari but seems to miss certain swaras in the avarohanam.
Thanks and regards
G. Ramaswamy

hi ramaswamy,
yes "metti oli katrodu" is from suddha dhanyasi
oru kunguma sengamalam appears to have a prati madhyamam and so it could be dharmavathi, hemavathi clan.

Badri Raghavan,
Hari Govindan has pointed out to me that 'metti oli' has both ga2 and ga3 in the charanam. So the raga turns out to be Jog.

Hi
I also wanted to know whether the song "Engenge engenge" from
Nerrukku Nerr film is Charukesi. I noticed its
similarity to a lot of Charukesi songs esp in the last
few lines of the anupallavi and charanam.
If anybody could throw light it shall be appreciated

Chandramouli: Engenge is indeed in Charukesi.....It's a Fantastic song isn't it?
As for Sanga Thamil, I guessed Abheri, but Dhanasri is very similar too. HARI(ANON) - please confirm.....Thanks

Chandramouli : Sanga Tamil starts in Abheri but the first charanam is Bageshree. Infact the start of this song is very similar to "Chinnam Chiru Vayasil" from Meendum Kokila which was also based on Abheri.

Sanga Thamizh is a ragamalika. As pointed out, the pallavi is in abheri, the charanam and the first interlude are in bageshri; the second interlude and charanam in sumaneesa ranjani. This, to my knowledge, was the first time IR used sumaneesa ranjani.

idhu oru kadhal mayakkam is based on sudha saaveri.another song in this raga is 'chithagathi pookale' from raajakumaran.'naan oru ponoviyam' is definitely not arabi.it is either mohanam or a mixture of mohanam and hamsadhwani.

one of the popular songs in arabi is 'erikaraiyin mele' .raja has given a funny song in this raaga which goes like 'aasai kiliye, ara kilo puliye, azhugina thakaaliye' from thambikku entha ooru.

chandramouli,
the first song, 'pon ezhil poothathu pudhu vaanil" is Bagesri. i am not sure about the other songs.
The following songs are all based on Bagesri
1. malarukku thendral pagaiyaanaal (enga veettu pillai)
2. nee ennenna sonnaalum kavidhai (movie?)
3. mayakkum maalai pozhudhe nee po po (kulebagaavali)
4. kalaiye en vaazhkaiyin dhisai maatrinaai (meenda sorgam?)
5. koluse koluse, yesa paadu koluse (some ramki movie)
(aayiram nilave vaa does not sound like bagesri)

Hi,
I remember one very good Bageshri from Maya Bazar. Any idea which is this song. An observation. They say that Sriranjani is the equivalent of Bageshri!!! Actually they sound so very different but I heard it on a tape of G S Mani that they were indeed the same. Can someone throw some light on this.

The thenilavu song is in Basanth. Maybe you are referring to some other song.

S.Suresh: Please look at the old responses, the difference b/w Sri Ranjani and Bhagayashree has been discussed.
It is basically in the Paryogam structure. The Arahonam/Avarohanam are the same, but when you listen, Bhagayashree tends to have a Kanada sound - incidentally, it used to be called Bhagayashree Kanada in the olden days......
Bhagayashree has a distinct sound and there are many film songs in both Sri Ranjani and Bhagayashree.....IR has done some great Sri Ranjani's and one really nice Bhagayashree I know....more details when I get back to London....

"kaalayum neeye" has a prominent use of M1 & M2 right in the pallavi, which I think is enough to rule out Hamsanandhi. The alap by Janaki has nice Basanth touches, don't you think so?

'Koondalile megam vandu' sounds like Bilahari. Can anyone confirm this? The cascading swaras in the first line of the pallavi are so much in tune (oops!) with the lyrics. Any other recent songs in Bilahari?

on: Sun May 10 14:20:46 EDT 1998
Diwakar,
yes!!! "koondalile megam vandu" (from Baalanaagammaa) is Bilahari, perhaps the best film song ever set on this raga. I do not know if there are any other film songs based on bilahari
- From: S.Suresh (@ dwarpal.wipsys.soft.net)
on: Mon May 11 00:55:35 EDT 1998
Saketh,
I am also not sure if they was any Bilahari before this song. I guess there is Bilahari in Unnal Mudiyum Thambi. Koondalile is a good Bilahari. In Telugu film music, S.Rajeshwar Rao has scored an excellent Bilahai "Evaru Nerparamma". In fact in this song, the Bilahari is given a much lighter touch but the song is excellent.
