Pal,
I have no idea about links for this or other songs. (When Ramaswamy asked me for some songs, I had to tape them on a cassette and mail it to him, since I am very computer-illiterate!) But, H&M has a cassette version of this film available, I think. Go ahead and buy it. There are a couple of Asha Bhosle-SPB songs, one SPB and Chitra song in MMG (check out the interludes in that) and the song I mentioned above plus a couple more. All fabulous songs...

Pal,
An amusing fact re. the tamil version Dharma Bhoomi that I just remembered. Guess who wrote the lyrics? Our own Diamond-Pearl! I found out about this just a few months ago when I caught the movie on TV in India.

anon,
that is an eye-opener about the dubbing movies. I guess, the original artists ( I mean, the actors and MDs etc ) have no idea of what is happening in these shady dubbings. That probably explains the recording quality also.
Anyway, thanks for the suggestion.
Regarding the 'kungumam manjaLukku' , I somehow felt that it is closer to amruthavarshini. Especially the stanzas... I agree the pallavi does have Ri.
Regarding the necessity to use dha because of any western compulsions, I couldnt figure out any necessity. Since Pa and Ni are there all the other notes are conveniently related by chords like Bminor, C, G, and Eminor.

I assumed that we are talking about kalyANi with Sa as C note.

Pal,
I am not an expert on western music. So please explain things to me like I am a kid! I think in western terminology, the song is in the E major key, as far I can tell. Based on that could you explain the chord stuff?
What I meant by compositional expediency was roughly that in the antara, he arrives at a point where he uses:
pa dha pa dha pa dha pa
and this structure is similar to the pallavi structure. May be he put himself in a situation where he had to use this, and opted for a major combination pa-dha2 as opposed to pa-dha1...
I guess I am confusing you by now...

Kungumam Manchalukku - I definitely can't hear any Amrithavarshini touches there.....Thoongaatha Vizligal is in Amrithavarshini. IR has written many songs in this Ragam. I can't think of them off hand, but I did a radio programme, which consisted of 45 minutes of Amirthavarshini, and there have been some very new songs it it too. The scale is SGMPNS SNPMGS - No Rishabam.
The Kalyani touch is definitely there in Kungumam Manchalukku....I think that that 'Rathnakanthi' is the best description for the Raga of that song. Thanks Hari Govindan and Ramaswamy.

I want to know the raga of the song 'RosAppu chinna rosAppu un pera chollum rosAppu' from the film 'sooriya vamsam'. The other day i had a chance to
hear kunnakkudi vaidhyanathan play that song. He was able to bring more classics
out of that song.

anon,
I assume E as sa for this song. THen the chords can be transposed to E,B,d#minor,g#minor. It is just mathematics...

Pal,
Please, could you explain the notion of chords a little bit and what you mean by them being conveniently located because of the presence of Pa and Ni?
Thanks.
BTW, have you heard the veera thalattu song I mentioned earlier? Another dha varjya derivative...

Hi Pal,
The Chords you have put can you clarify on the whether they are inverstions or direct Key chords.
I played the chords but it did not sound perfect. (might be the composer has composed without proper invertions)

I think "Rosappu Chinna Rosappu" from SuryaVamsam has a touch of Abheri.

is the song by nithyasree "kannodu kanbathelam" based on abheri? if so, i can certainly think of a parallel between this and singaravelane vaa from konjum salangai where janaki burst into the tfm scene like a star. any comments on this?

madhan raghavan,
the last song (mohd. rafi and lata) is based on the raga Lalitha. i happened to listen to this song played on a indian classical music programme on the radio. compare with the famous lalitha song "idhazhil kadai ezhudhum neramidhu". also, i think the song "vaigaraiyil vagai karaiyil" is based on the raga subhapantuvaraali

Hi Badri
Your are right it is set in Abheri,
Same as singaravellane vella...
In fact few note formations are similar.
The beats are continues and reminds me of
Sembruthi poov --- song by IR.
(only the beats)

VAIGARAYIL VAIGAI KARAYIL - Subha Panthuvarali
KANNODU - Is in Abheri, but is not at all a parallel to Singaravelane, just that they take the same ragam.....

on: Fri Apr 24 07:46:56 EDT 1998
Ek Shahenshah is in raag Lalit. You get shades of vaigariyil because subha pantuvarali and Lalit are tonic equivalents, using pa of the latter as the former's sa. (Lalit uses both ma's but omits pa.)
