Malayalam film industry has a good track record of using published novels/Stories.( I don tknow about the songs there)
Tamil film industry has not used pre-written stories/novels much.Thought of discussing the songs in such movies, how well were they fitted in and how the music/songs elevated/brought down the story value.
Thyagaboomi - Kalki- Subramnaiam
Miss Malini -Kothamangalam subbu-Vasan(?)
Gomathiyin Kadalan- Thevan (a TRR starrer)
Thillana Moganambal-Kothamangalam Subbu-APN
Iruvar Ullam -Lakshmi (Penn Manam)-LV Prasad
Sila Nerangalil - JK-Bhimsingh
Oru Nadigai Nadagam paarkiral-JK
Agni Pravesam - JK (Was it released?)
Sirai-Anuradha Ramanan-RC Sakthi
Priya -Sujatha-SP Muthuraman ( sorry to include!)
Gayathri- Sujatha-SP Muthuraman
Ethu Eppadi irukku -Sujatha(Anitha elam manaivi)-SPM
Thikkatra parvathi -Rajaji-Singetham SrinivasaRao
Parthiban Kanavu-Kalki-??(is it ok to include?)
Mogamul-Thi.Ja- Gnanasekaran
Shall we include
Padavikkaga -(Mudalvan)-Sujatha-Shankar
Kallukkul Eeram (Hey Ram)-Ra.Su.Nall perumal-Kamal
In my view Sila nerangalil should rank first as a goos story, good songs in a well made movie, followed by Iruvar Ullam (a run-of-the mill story) brilliantly scripted and directed by LV Prasad.

Perhaps it is 'Sowbhagyavathi' and not 'Gunasundari' (King Lear)

"The Taming of the shrew" was the mother of " God father" in the way it inspired other movies!
Savle Samali
Pattikada pattanama
Poova Thalaya

Maapillai

Friends,
>>>>>And S. Balachander did the superb thriller, Nadu Iravil based on Agatha Christie's Ten Little Niggers.<<<<<
Somewhere, in one of the recent threads (Best of the rest), Saravanan had written that 'nadu iravil' was based on Agatha Christie's 'And then there were none!'. Though I have not read this, the title suits the 'nadu iravil' theme aptly!
I read somewhere that ' udal, poruL, aanandhi' was being made a TV serial. I don't know if it was completed / telecast! I wonder how they can manage the 'koodu vittu koodu paayum' theme without confusing the audience! In fact, the story itself can be appreciated smoothly, only when you read it the second time! The first time you'll not know that ' koodu vittu koodu paaythal' is happening throughout the novel till you reach the last chapter!

C V, Both 'And then there were none' and 'Ten little niggers' were the same book under different titles- perhaps the U.S. edition could not have the the word 'Niggers' for racial reasons and so it was titled as 'And then there were none'.

Saravana! I am amazed.
Yes, I remember Shanthi Nilayam. What a movie.
Any more? James Bond for instance?

Then There Were None, Ten litte Indians and Ten little Niggers - all were the same AC book. The hindi version was Gumnaam.
Santhi Nilayam was a (more than less) remake of Sound of Music, which also had its Hindi avataar as Parichay. (Talking of SN - Iyarkaienum Ilayakanni Yengugiral Thunaiyai Yenni - PS/SPB - Knockout!)

If tomorrow comes and Kamalhasan ?
I don't think Kamal will agree to act in a heroine oriented story like that ... unless and until he plays the heroine role also ;-)
Cinema Virumbi ...

And there was "Anadhai anandan" based on Oliver Twist. It was a pathetic movie with Master Prabhakar hamming away . The only plus point was that it was in colour.( Those days even Sivaji & MGR used to act in B &W movies)
Shanti Nilayam was indeed a dove tail joint of " Sound of Music" & " Jane Eyre". I remember being scared of Pappamma as a kid. That Teluguish Tamil of SPB had its own charm- apart from Iyarkkai ennum, Maligaipoo vaangi vanthen, Aval oru Navarasa, Pottu Vaitha mugamo, madhamo maangani all had that very cute quality in them. Today's SPB singing those songs just doesn't sound good( medai katcherigallil!!)
Vaasanthi's some story was made into Malayalam as"Koodu Evide" at the instance of the film's heroine Suhasini. Take that( export kuda undu!!)

OISG,
master Shekar Irukkalam irukkalam.! he is a hamming expert!!
Reg vaasanthi the story was in Tamil -I give Vasanthi a wide breadth so i don't recollect the name- but the story is about a boarding school teacher, student & the teacher's fiancee - Suhasini,Rehman engira Raghu? & Mamooty played the lead roles. This information is from the horse's mouth- should be filly's mouth.

On Vasanthi, her India-today stint was good i feel.I found some sincere attempts to bring good stories in a main stram mag.She made a good editor.

In fact, Komal Swaminathan's hilarious play 'perumaaLE saakshi' was made first in Malayalam as 'paalaazhi madhanam' and was subsequently repeated in Tamil as 'kumaara sambhavam'! (Remember 'kanni raasi en raasi! rishabha kaaLai raasi en raasi!?)

OISG,
I came to know abt. that flower from another novel 'Gulmohar marangaLukkuk keezee' who wrote it ???, I don't remember !
On Vasanthi, You are right - she did some great things as India today editor, Just 1 short story per week and one book review per week is all she could manage in a arasiyal paththirikkai like India Today - But she made that contribution count (Those days atleast 4 India Today stories will be there in every Ilakkiya Sinthanai annual prizes !), and 'India Today Ilakkiya malarkaL', PeNkaL malar etc., were her big achievements ! (Her stories in India today & its malars are published as a separate book now !)
Sad, Nowadays India today is NOT publishing any short stories - very sad for people like me who started writing much late and find one big oppurtunity going nowhere :-(

Speaking of sure hits but not great stories in line of "Mithala vilas of Laskhmi i would make a killing with Subhashini s novel in Idayam persugirathu (I forgot the title though..illegitimate son of a teenage mother, father a retd military man, brought by a chritstian and the hero drives a truck- all bloddy good ingredients for commercial success!)
Vannakanavugal by Savi with a Japanese backdrop is another one.
Coming back to Parthiban Kanavu i think the starcast was perfect with Gemini,Savithri and Rengaro.Someone told me that Veda scored original songs. Is it true?

NagaS, it must be either if Tommorow Comes or Master of the Game. I remember that Kamal switched the story to hero-oriented. :)

The Subashini serial in IP was Yeththanai Manam, Yeththanai Niram. She also wrote another "maadha" novel for "manian maadha idhazh" titled: Kozhuppu (nothing personal, I assure you) :-))
Kumara Vijayam - Nice PS-SPB duet "Kanni Rasi En Rasi"
Innorru chinna maatram (andha vaasanthi tribute'il) "Guruvayooril Gulmohur Pookka Pookkuma? " (don't miss the alliteration!)
