Malayalam film industry has a good track record of using published novels/Stories.( I don tknow about the songs there)
Tamil film industry has not used pre-written stories/novels much.Thought of discussing the songs in such movies,how well were they fitted in and how the music/songs elevated/brought down the story value.

In my view Sila nerangalil should rank first as a goos story,good songs in a well made movie,followed by Iruvar Ullam (a run-of-the mill story) brilliantly scripted and directed by LV Prasad.

  OISG- I don't know much about Miss.Malini, but this is what little I know about her:
  
  Miss Malini- 1947 was a Gemini film based on RK Narayan's famous novel Mr.Sampath. It was a story of a glib talker and a girl whom he lures into the filmworld.
  
  Kothamangalam Subbu himself acted in the role of Mr.Sampath, and most probably wrote the lyrics for all the songs too. I am not sure about the MD-Gemini films were mostly done by S Rajeswara Rao those days-perhaps he did Miss Malini too, or was it Eemani Shankara Shastri, who also was part of Gemini those days?
  
  Among the songs, I seem to remember only MS Sundaribai's 'Andha naalum vandhidaatho', MS Sundarbai-TV Rathnam's 'Baley joru joru baley joru pattana vaasam' and TV Rathnam's classical 'Sri Saraswathi namosthuthe'- all great songs.
  
  Vasan made the same story in Hindi too as Mr.Sampath in 1952. Mothilal acted in the title role. Eemani was the MD. PB Srinivas sang his first film song in this film. Other songs were by Shamshad Begum, Geetha Roy and Jikki.
  
  Cho filmed the same story, in his own style -Mr.Sampath-1972. MD-MSV. Songs include Orey kelvi unaikketpen-MSV, Alangaram pothumadi-TMS-Manorama and Aarambam yaaridam-SPB-PS.

  OISG,
  you had mentioned somewhere that you would like to see" Mithila vilas" being made. That brings me to my wistful thinking. If i found my pot of gold at the end of the rainbow I'll make asokamitran's " 18 atchakkodu" It is an amazing story which can also be visually told. It tackles the sensitive issue of Hyderabad "Police action" through the eyes of Babu an adoloscent entering manhood. It also has college , cricket also in the backdrop. I'd work with ashokamitran himself for a tight 2 hr screenplay. Hmm if wishes were horses.
  I think among the various Ganesh's Suresh at least passed. But Jai & Rajni were definitely below par.
  to continue the digression in my growing days we used to have a favourite passtime- casting for Ponniyin selvan. We were horrified that MGR had bought the rights so we had unanimously cast

  An interesting corollary to Jayakanthan's SNSM would be Kamala Sadagopan's Kadhavu. The book was optioned for a film version by Sridhar. I beleive the film was made (*ing Jayachitra) but never saw the light of day. BTW, the novel won some major literary award (Kalki, Sahitya or something?)

  Yes,Kadhavu never opened up.The stills were there in Pesum Padam.I remember my mother meeting Kamala Sadagopan (Gopu of Sridhar-Gopu fame).She was staying next to Ramanuja koodam kalyana mandapam in Triplicane.Anyone other than Sujatha and Cho and anything other Muthu comics were not acceptable to me at that time.My mother had a long discussion.I wish i had met Gopu instead.

  I think Sridhar Rajan (Geminis daughter GG s husband) made Indra Parthasarthy s "Kurudhip punal" as "Kan Sivanthal Man Sivakkum".This novel won a Sahithya Academy -based on the Keez venmani (near Nagapattinam) incident of killing workers belonging to another caste.Except for "Manitha Manitha" song and some attempted "art film posters" i am not able to recollect anything else about this movie.
  
  Kamal as usual stole this title ,ofcourse made a good movie.

  & OISG, the JK movie is Unnai Pol Oruvan. Ennai pol Oruvan is a Sivaji TRRamanna movie eminently forgettable except for the music- Thangangale naalai Thalaivargale & Vellale vizhigal stand out. can you guess on whom the latter was picturised.Sivaji &???. a huge surprise when I saw the movie.

  BUT you have mixed up "Ennai pol oruvan" with "Unnai Pol oruvan".The Sivaji-Jaikumari (alam??) "Vellle vizhigal" would have given JK a massive cardiac arrest!His movie was "Unnai pol oruvan" with music by MBS ,i think.

  How about English novels and books?
  We know that Bourne Identity was made as Vetri Vizha.
  And S. Balachander did the superb thriller, Nadu Iravil based on Agatha Christie's Ten Little Niggers.
  Even Sidney Sheldon's book If Tommorow Never Comes was adapted for a Kamal movie, I forget which.

  OISG- "Kairassaikaaran' was indeed based on Ra.Ki Ra's story. Forgettable film, but excellent songs- 'Kai veesum thaamarai'-SPB-SJ, 'Nilavondru kanden'-SPB,SJ and 'Then sumaindha mulla thaana'-SPB.
  
  Of course, two of Ra.Ki.Ra's works were filmed earlier:
  
  Sridhar's 'Sumaithaangi' and Velumani-K Shankar's'Idhu Sathiyam'
  
  Sumaithaangi was a superb film- with lovely b&w visuals and haunting songs by PBS and SJ. (SJ's En Annai seitha paavam is simply heart-rending!) The last shot, where Devika sees Sambhar as a paadhiriyaar still lingers--
  
  'Idhu sathiyam' too was ok- though if I were directing it, Ashokan and Chandrakantha wouldn't be my choice. Kannamba and Baliah were perfect, though. Songs were excellent.
  
  Jaavar Seetharaman's (I think) 'Panam Penn Pasam' came as a film under the same name stg. Muthuraman, Saritha and Vadivukkarasi.

  Aalavandhaan- Some I can remember:
  
  Victor Hugo's Les Misrebles was filmed by the great K Ramnath as 'Ezhai padum paadu'-1950. Stg: Nagiah,Baliah,Lalitha,Padmini etc. Excellent songs by SMS- 'Youvaname'-MLV, 'Vidhiyin vilaivaal'-(Radha)Jayalakshmi, 'Kanivudan thirumbiye paarum'-PA Perianayaki, 'Aasai kiliye'-PA Perianayaki and 'Kannan mananilayai'-MLV.
  
  'Shanthi Nilayam' was a wonderful mixture of Sound of Music and Jane Eyre. Great songs by MSV.
  
  'Makkal En Pakkam' was an adaptation of Sheldon's 'The Rage of Angels'. Average music by Chandrabose- 'Maane pon maane'-SJ and 'Aandavana paarkkanum'-SPB.
  
  Shakespeare's 'The taming of the shrew'also found its way to Kodambakkam in the form of the Sivaji-Bhanumathi starrer 'Arivaali'. Good music by SVV.
  'Vaazhiya Needoozhi'-P Leela-(Radha)Jayalakshmi,
  'Arivukku virundhaagum thirukkurale'-TMS and 'Koovadha inbakuyil--Bhanumathi.
  
  'King Lear' also was not spared- I vaguely remember a Gemini-Savithri starrer- Gunasundari?-running on the same lines.
