Last night, at Sony Studios in New York City, I had the pleasure of
hearing the almost-finished mix of Ilayaraaja's amazing work. It is
unlike anything I've ever heard before, a stunning blend of Indian
and Western music and instruments. I asked Mr. Raaja if this was
something different for him too, and he said he had never done
anything like this piece before. I don't know if anyone has. So I
believe those of you looking forward to this are in for a great
treat. The section to which I contributed English words is about
twenty minutes long and dovetails back and forth between Mr. Raaja
singing in Tamil and an American singer singing in English, plus
there is a large and beautifully produced chorus. Mr. Raaja's
orchestrations are superb, and the recording engineer, Richard King,
has done a spectacular job sonically. I felt so very proud to be a
small part of this project.
Mr. Raaja is a pleasure to work with, in answer to your question. He
is a quiet and gentle personality, always smiling and encouraging,
which can make one forget what a musical genius he is. He was
extremely clear with me about what he wanted me to do in
translating/paraphrasing the Tamil text, what portions of Manikka-
Vacagar's poem he wished me to emphasize, and what the deeper
meanings were. When he wanted revisions, he was again very clear and
helpful as to what adjustments he felt needed to be made to
accomplish his vision. The people Mr. Raaja surrounds himself with,
at least those it was my pleasure to meet, are also unfailingly
positive personalities. The entire project for me has been an
enjoyable and fascinating experience from beginning to end, and I
feel extremely lucky to have been asked by Mr. Raaja to participate.
I hope this answers some of your questions, and I believe I can
promise you with confidence you are in for a major treat when you
hear Thiruvasakam in Symphony.
Sincerely, Stephen Schwartz

Gyan/SSAV, agreed that India is still the major market, but states outside of TN could prove to be more problematic in this name business. For an average Mumbaiite say, neither "Thiruvasagam" nor "symphony" would make much sense :-) But I am all for the original title. What I suggested was an addendum( maybe the English equivalent could ALSO be mentioned in the cover, certainly not in place of the wordThiruvasagam)

MumbaiRamki, speaking of Sherlock Holmes, i just found DVDs of Jeremy Brett as Sherlokc Holmes. Unbeatable acting and suspense. Rightful comparison, i say.
vijay, you said average Mumabaiite? ;---) for them, everything is going to make sense pretty soon. i can tell you that much.

well, just now read SSav's writeup in TIS site. Looks like IR himself has anwered my query :-)
-----------------------
"..This is not Thiruvaasakam in Symphony but Thiruvaasakam by Ilaiyaraaja. Raaja told us to make it known to the general public that the format of this musical is called an oratorio wherein the religious scripture Thiruvasakam is elaborately set to music, in choruses with an orchestral accompaniment. So, the CD cover & sleeve will bear the “THIRUVASAKAM BY ILAIYARAAJA” label and not TiS!!
"
----
Thats the end of that issue right there.
Kudos to TIS-USA team for all their efforts!
SSSAV, good recap of last week's events as well
Hope we get to hear it soon.
SSAV, does Fr.Gasper have a separate email id? One of his mail IDs bounced. I sent a list of music colleges/depts etc. in USA to thiruvasakam@hotmail.com. Not sure whether it reacvhed him. Wondering whether there is any other id to reach him

[Nov 5] - The D-DAY!! The first cut of the entire recording of TiS was ready late in the evening and when Richard King played it in the studios in front of Ilaiyaraaja, Karthik Raaja, Brian McKenna, VP of Sony Music and a few other guests, there was so much emotion and ovation all around (with a few sighs of relief from us too!!). Ilaiyaraaja was given a copy of this CD for him to listen and make any technical corrections before the final master copy is produced and mailed to him (by the end of this week).
SSSSAV, any subjective view of the pulse around, was there oohs and aahs. First of all, did they all really get a grip on the flow, the structure, patterns, etc.... of the compositions?
Who was the most excited there? What is your personal opinion in comparison to film songs (now i am listening to Anthapurathil Oru Maharajan from Deepam, the prelude 5 sec violins still continue to just preplex me. - 5 secs vs. 5 minute songs vs 60 mins - I am just totally blown away!!!!! I am sure there is a lot that can overwhelm them in a steady fashion.)

Have u ever seen the crowd in Tata Opera Hall When the Mumbai Orchestra performs ..I went once for a Mahler SYmphony ,and it was a full house !!Tata Opear Hall is teh biggest Opera Hall in India ,i SUppose ....
if you publicize it correctly ,crowds will come for sure in Mumbai ..!!!!!! They may not come if you say Mr.Ramki ( i did'nt wnat to offend some other's name ) is going to conduct this ..Instead if you say Mr.Joesph Franklin of Iran is going to conduct ,they will pour in ...

SSSSAV, thanks for the midnite update in tis-usa.com . you all must be in real celeberatory mood this past weekend. I "want" this album to be nothing less than a phenomenon first internally by word of mouth spreading from Sony Studios to say, Chicago Symphony to Hollywood in a matter of few days. Then, I expect IR must get the inspiration to think of another one this time with Karthik Raaja as well giving tracks!!!!
However, I am puzzled by the turn of name events - Symphony not? Chorus? Is this some broadway musical, then ;---))))) Just kidding.
Can someone write a book on this entire event since August 2003? and sell it along with the CD, etc..?
Please feed us thirsty souls with more news in the next few days, if possible.

Wow! just reading Schwartz' writeup of the album makes my spine tingle with exicitement.
Though I am dying to get my hands on it, I hope they delay the release till it has been marketed enough.
Not just mumbaiites, huge crowds have come for zubin mehta and yanni performances, I guess its just the star value attached to it. So if somebody big conducts this, it will be a huge hit.

CSS ;---), tell me a greater star than IR? a greater conductor than IR? (a conductor who can compose, orchestrate, conduct, mix ones' own mind-boggling compositions is the greatest music maker-conductor-composer-etc-etc.. ever)
let us put all those show biz guys where they belong and give the true creators their due. look at the substance instead of the form, for a change. when people develop their brains to look past the superficial into the content, then there will be harmony everywhere. i insist ;---))))

Oratorio is it? I used to wonder if IR was going to use a fusion of Gregorian chants and Vedic chants for the verses of Thiruvasagam. Vedic chant was used quite well in Nothing But Wind and so was quite eager to hear an extended version in TIS. Don't know much about Oratorio, so will be a good treat to hear it for the first time with our own native tamil flavour. will certainly starve myself before this main course is served.

Dr.SK and SSSAV,
Thanks for updating in detail in TIS and the short and sweet recap .. from 2003 to date...
I like to sahre some thing here...
I was travelling with Dr.SK from NC to Yogaville .. we were listening to tamil movie songs ... and he was playing one CD which has, I think the moview name is KadalOvium ... followed by KadaloraKavidaigal..
last song of KO in that cd is Dham Dham Da Namb Da Dham by SPB and next song was Adi Aathadi from KK by S.J ... DR.SK said after the last KO song and when Adi Athadi was playing.. nalla virundu sapitu .. super payasam kudutha eapdi irukumao ... apadi iruku...
Now I think we can get not payasam but nectar in the form of Thiruvasagam by ONE and ONLY IR
