Mano and ARR

ARR seems not using Mano these days. Only in Thiruda Thiruda and Kaadhalan, Mano had good (I mean full length) songs. In Merupu Kalalu (Minsara Kanavu in Tamil), he sang Strawberry kanne song. I feel Mano sang those songs well. ARR should be using him more -- atleast I feel, Mano can sing those songs that ARR is singing better than ARR. I am seeing a trend that ARR is taking one song in each of his movies...

Ok I agree ! But when did poets and lyricist stop using such parallels in the songs as to single out IR.
I just wanted to emphasize the futility of the whole argument based on Nila athu vanathu mele song. When kannadhasan writes, it can be for the situation, whereas when someone like the role of
Janakaaraj sings "Nila athu vaanathu mele" it does not fit the situation, is it ??
Huh, some argument by Srikanth here !!

One more song IR ruins that song with his famous (?) voice. Hear the Lady voice version of ThAlAttu mAri pOnathey. Hear IR's version. You will find a biggggg difference.
Surely, IR misuses his status. Dappanguttu songs are ok for IR not the melodious ones.

Mukund,
IR as a lyricistukku "Nadodi Thendral" paatta udhaaranamaa sollunga. IMO, "nila adhu vaanathu melae" can't be compared with "Kungumam sivappu" just because the two lyricists are stating the obvious. And, please don't compare IR as a lyricist with Kannadasan. IR is a great composer, no doubt, but no great a lyricist than VM, let alone Kannadasan.
Jee,
IR's voice suits many songs more than any other singer. Not just dappaanguthu songs. I'm talking melodies also. What about "Janani Janani" and "Metti Oli"? Also, I happened to hear this song "Engaa en jeevanae" ('Uyarndha ULLam') and "naanaaga naan illai thaayae" ('Thoongaadhae Thambi Thoongaadhae'). They have two versions - one by IR and another by KJY. Somehow, I liked the version by IR more than that by KJY. KJY's voice may be more melodious than IR's but somehow I felt that the "emotional content" in IR's singing was more than that in KJY's (the films had only KJY's versions). Wait - I'm not comparing KJY and IR as singers. KJY is a great singer. But, somehow, in these two songs, I liked IR's versions more than KJY's. But, there are songs where IR's version is not that good. Eg. "Idhayam oru kovil" ("Idhaya Koil"), "Kalyaana maalai" ("Pudhu Pudhu ArthangaL").

Looks like there are two segments here. One who loves IR's voice..the other who hates it...For those who hate IR's voice..don't listen to it.
I love IR's voice. Some of his recent songs I love:
Thanthaniyaga - Nilave Mugam Kaatu
Paddi Thrintha - Kakkai chiraginile
Veenilavukku Asai - Poonthottam
Konji Pesu - Kadhal Kavidhai
Poongatru - Nilave Mugam Kattu
Iniya Malargal - Poonthottam
I am writing this not to convince the IR haters in this df. I am writing this so that if IR reads this thread or some how gets information on ths thread, i want him to know that there is a customer segment out here that wants him to continue to sing and continue to compose and thankful to him for his continuing brilliant work as ever.

karthi, oru chinna doubt:
Sindhubhairavi (especially mari mari ninne and kalaivaaNiyE) compose paNNina IR, KJY kku gamakam illama, shruthi illaama paadi kaatti irupparnu neeenga nambareengalaa ? Another good song of IR is "Naan thEdum sevvanthi poo". He has a good voice may be too inferior to be compared to the likes of SPB and KJY. He has sung many good songs. So I think there is enough justification for the inception of a thread "IR -the singer".

I just gave my response to Srikanth a little late that is all. I am not trying to argue the greatness of lyrics of IR against Kannadhasan
I am just trying to point out the complete futility in arguinh this way - "Stating the obvious".
From time immemorial stating the obvious has been one of the lines of the poems, typically the next line will compare it to something.
To state such a thing as an argument for "Nila athu" is more like an expression of "erichal" to me.
And that is what I tried to state !!!!!!!!!

MS , Mukund and of course, dear Srikanth !!
True that IR does not have a great voice - but genuinely creative people NEED NOT have great voices - and it is true vice-versa.....
even though I am a "gyana soonyam" in Carnatic classical music, I have heard many friends of mine, viz., Mr.Venu Madhav (from Hyderabad, who has close to 20 years of training in classical music and has featured in the BAJAJ singing program in Enaadu TV hosted by SPB), Kaushik (from Bangalore - he has learnt music from TN SESHAGOPALAN for more than 12 years) and many others tell me that IR's voice may be abrasive at times, but when it comes to SHEER CREATIVITY in using classical music, he is a pioneer without any parallels -
One of my Chennai friend's father (he is no more now) used to listen to "Chinna Raasavey sittharumbu " and tell us all "this is an incredible, brilliant Lathangi from this man (IR)" - such is the reverence that people have for IR !!

Any comments about IR always sings for Karthik, right from his (Karthik's) first film ?
Do you feel, the voice suits karthik or IR "made" it to suit ?

I don't feel IRs voice suits Karthick.
But, when I watched 'avathaaram', I was amazed at how well IRs voice suited Nasser.
However, I still like IRs voice -but not in all songs though.
I like him mostly in 'gramiya paadalhal' like those in 'avathaaram' and 'veera thaalaattu' and pathos. Songs like 'konji peasu kovam enna kannama' and 'naan thaedum sevvanthi poevithu' are exceptions to the rule.

Ada yaruppa Yen pera....;-)
Mukund,KD wrote such lyric for MGR who was in DMK (karupu, sigappu), the hero loves her as much he love katchi , that is all.
SM, your "naanaga naan illai..." example, insult for SPB.PLease don't let Balu read it.
Madhan, we not discussing IR's creativity here, only his singing.
IR voice good for songs like 'Chinnappadas','Ithu thaan ithukku thaan' etc.

Koothan,
I never meant any insult for SPB. I remember a version by KJY for that song (not SPB). I like both the versions but I liked IR's version more. This doesn't mean any insult for anyone.

hi guys,
Did you ever listened to "Pattu PAda Va" film songs ? SPB starring as Singer. Strange is IR and SPB sings in same song. I like those songs, only when IR stops and gives song to SPB. IR's voice is horrible in the whole album.

Hi
IR is spoiling his good music by repeatedly
giving chances to Arun mozhi ,pavathatini
and some times to Mano .
I consider all the above singers are absolutely waste to the CORE ..
i really do wonder how these people got a
break ..
They are not even fit for a stupid programme
at Doordarshan called 'vayaloom vaalvum '
Actually , there is a guy called Sundar..
he sings damn well .. probably , some
people might have listened him performing
on stage ...hes not got a break ..
wow ! what a terrific voice ..
But see , some stupid fit for nothing
singers get a chance (whoelse Arun Mozhi,
Mano ,pavatharini )..
This is what destiny is ..
i wish Sundar should get a break immediately
he can beat any top notch artiste in the
film music industry ..
You guys will hear his voice soon in some
film songs..
Kishore.

Karthi,
Thanks a lot for that. I was indeed talking only about "engae en jeevanae" song. Then I saw my earlier post - I'd mentioned the "naanaaga naan illai" song also. Actually, I liked both versions of IR. And, I didn't compare IR's version of that song with SPB's. Sorry for the confusion.

"Naanaaga naan illai" song has only two versions - one by SPB and one by IR. There is no KJY version for this.

IR's singing is good only for certain Ocassions and not for every Ocassion. If a voice suits only certain Ocassions then it means that That Voice needs lot of training and but not the least THE BLESSING OF ALMIGHTY.
IR's is blesssed by the ALMIGHTY for composing music and not for Singing and the problem is he is trying to reverse it.
One Comical and Ironical instance of that is. One of the Middle East programmes conducted by Gangai Amaran,IR and SPB. As usual during the show Amaran starts a discussion with SPB and in one such instance Amaran,IR and SPB are chatting on the stage about "Kruval Vazham" Amaran asks SPB 'Yenga Kural pathi enna ninaiku renga" SPB replies "Adu Kuralaaa"
