Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

"I always feel that artistes should be honoured thus while they are still living- the archives of such programmes may be of use to posterity" - so true!! My heartfelt thanks to you for patiently bringing us all the summary of the whole program. Hmm, all good things indeed must end.

Thanks to you, the members of this forum have watched the Asianet programme - from a distance, but brought closer to home with your words. And such precise and heartfelt words they are!
Our debt to you just keeps growing!
I have not heard the Nijangal song. I know that Susi used to ask about this song often, but nobody seemed to have a file/link :-(
I hope Asianet has the commercial (if not good) sense to release these programmes as DVD collections. I'd be the first one to line-up to buy all the episodes.
Whether VJ sings in films again or doesn't, I think she is beyond proving her calibre to anyone. An artiste of such excellence does not depend on playback offers. She seems to be content singing her devotional and other genre songs. And those of us who value "voice" over "celebrity" can always listen to her non-film albums. They are just as rewarding, if not more.
But this much one does have to admit: For the southern film music industry to sideline such an exemplary artiste is a statment of their cultural disregard. And only their loss.

Thanks for the new link. I'll listen to it soon.

Naaz- I believe Sripriya starred with Kamal in Maria My Darling.
I didn't see the Mangudi Minor song in the VJ website- and that is why I thought I'll upload it.

You got me there. Where have you uploaded this song? Have I missed some link in the previous pages??
Wasn't there a KH / Sumalatha film that was in the cans for a long long time, something called Raja Nee Jeichutte or along those lines? I vaguely remember some buzz about it those days.

Naaz: I was patting myself for an innovative enhancement of the chronology, and you haven't even noticed it! Andho parithaabathukkuriya abhagyasaali aanaen!
Please go through the chronolgy again- I have given the link to the Mangudi Minor song. And tell me if it works. It works fine for me- I'm listening to the song even as I am typing this.

Listened. It is a good transfer, and the song had me humming along (of course, the hindi tune immediately clicked in!!). Interesting how many of the solos/duets in hindi that were "remakes" all went VJs way: Oru Paadal Naan Kaeten, Ore Jeevan Ondre Ullam, Kannan Enge, Mazhakkala Megham (Pyar Karnewale from Shaan by AB,Manjal Vanna Roja (Dhanno Ki Aankhon Mein - RDB Kitaab)...there must be others.
CB had a good rapport with VJ, and their song collaborations were memorable. I particularly liked the songs from Oru Malarin Payanam. The solo from Manidhan - Muthmuthu Penne - was another remarkable effort.

Naaz- Glad you could listen to the song. I thought it'll make the chronology more interesting, if you could listen to the song as well.
I'll try, wherever possible, to provide a link to the songs that I'll be covering in the next chapters of the chronology.(if the song is not already there at VJ website, that is)
That Kamal-Sumalatha non-starter was titled Raja Ennai Mannithuvidu, or something like that.

Your chronology cannot be "more" interesting. It is already all it can be: detailed, lucid and evocative. Hence, we follow the lines and don't even see the link!! If you gives us songs (unavailable at the website) along with the write-ups it is like gilding the lily, and there's nothing wrong with that. What is indian "culture" if not an accumulation of embelishment upon embelishment (from garam masala, all the way to sanjay leela bansali!!)
We'll absorb any thing you send our way.
Add links to your chronology by all means. But also rememeber: without them nothing's MISSING. :-)

Is the song Vaishnavi Bhargavi (from Swatikiranam) a well-known (and, or) traditional composition? In the middle of this song there is a string of (female) names, all qualifiers for the goddess Durga, and VJs work on these is superb. "Sharada" which follows later in the song is pronounced in a way that taps the musicality in it.
Another question: Can one use the term "lullaby" for Pranathi Pranthi? It is a soft, rock-a-bye number (for most of the song - there is a shift (not loud) in the last bit - but it returns to the original melody in conclusion.
Pranathi and Pranuthi are conjugations of the same verb? How does it work?
And - there is one particular word that caught my attention and the pronunciation of it was magical -
"sjothyulu" (the first phoneme is between s and j and also a blend of the two.) What a word! Does it just mean "light"? Or is there another meaning to it?

Answers:
a. Vaishnavi Bhargavi, as far as I know, is not a traditional composition. It was written by Seetharamasastry, in a beautiful mix of Telugu and Samskrit. This song has the names of all the three goddesses - Lakshmi, Saraswathi and Parvathi. The first charanam is devoted to "Sangeetham" and the second one to "Sahityam". A good composition.
b. I don't think you could call Pranathi pranathi a lullaby, although it sounds like one. The simple reason being the lyrics - they are not of the nature of a lullaby. The lyrics, in summary, are simply the lyricist's elaboration of nature as it relates to the human being and our arts and culture. I shall translate this song sometime, whenever I finish the "telimanchu" translation :)
Also pranathi and pranuthi are different, I think. Pranathi means "I salute to" and pranuthi means "I praise". I however have to clarify this to be certain.
The word you heard was not "sjothyulu", I think it is "dyotalu" figuratively meaning "my respects". Dyota/dyuti normally means light or sunshine. The line goes - "Aa lalitha kaLaa srushtiki arpinche dyotalivae (dyotalu ivae)" meaning "Here are my regards to all of these wonderful creations called fine arts like music, painting, poetry etc". I guess you can elaborate after that.

Thank you for the answers. I do the best I can, even though it may not be a language I don't really comprehend (except for the obvious words that have tamizh/sanskrit influences). I like to listen to words and their pronunciation, be it Urdu or Telugu, I am committed to syllables and speech, and how languages, on closer scrutiny, can reveal un-thought-of parallels and similarities. Just my kinda thing :-)
You are right in that lullablies are "infant"centred and often involve the "infant" in some song-narrative by the grand/mother, sister etc. and Pranathi does not have this direct connection. But it is such a soothing song, it could cast a sombular spell on any child. Beauty in Purity -nnu sonna, this song will make the list without a second thought.
What a lovely word "dyotalu" is! I will have to listen to the song again, just so that I can be right that we are thinking of the same word. So there is a "light" aspect in the word Dyota/uti.
Is Dyota a sanskrit word or is it indigenous telugu? And do you think it could be a later form of "jyoti" which also means "light"? Just curious.
Thanks for making the time for these clarifications. I look forward to Telimanchu whenever you are read to send it our way!

Dyuti, I know, is a sanskrit word. Dyota is also probably a sanskrit word - atleast it seems like. But when the word enters telugu, it changes the meaning quite a bit, I think. No one says dyota for light/sunshine as far as I know. Dyota on the other hand in telugu usually is referred to "respects or regards". So although the word is possibly derived from sanskrit, somewhere down the line, it changed its meaning entirely.
Jyoti/dyota relation is interesting, but I don't know if one is the predecessor of the other. It would be interesting to know.
You are right about the Pranathi pranathi song. A nice contrast to VJ's song (which is like a lullaby) is the same song sung by SPB and Chitra in a totally different tune, based on Naata ragam (which is as far from a lullaby as it gets).

I am glad that you concur. Dyota does sound like a sanskrit word, and the evolution (or erosion) of its meaning from the original might have happened over time and usage in Telugu/or Telugu dialect.
Swatikiranam has some amazing compositions by KVM. Shivani Bhavani gives me gooseflesh everytime I listen to it. What a scale and such a fervour filled rendition. VJ charges through this one without a moment's breath. Ditto for Aanathi Neeara. I also find Jabila Jabillamma (yet again a "lullaby"ish mood) to be a fine study in the training/tone differentials in the voices of VJ and KSC. Sangeetham Sahityam Kamalam by SPB resonates with memories of Shankarabharanam.
BTW, did you know that Shankarabharanam also had a (dubbed?) malayalam version?
