hi all, I am Anand from bangalore and a new visitor to the tfm page. I am a great fan of both ARR and IR. I browsed through all the earlier threads on ARR and IR. It seems to me that there are quite a few anti ARRs out here.
Let me tell you something about IRs music. IRs music became popular and sounded different because he tried to bring in a westernization of Carnatic ragas in his songs. Even a dappanguthu was in Lathaangi or sivaranjani. That actually made the difference. Otherwise he is no great MD. One might argue that such a westernization or incorporation of a carnatic raga in a dappanguthu or jazz is something that demands great applause. But IR doesn't deserve that because, if u say u are tuning a song in a particular raagam, you have to bring out the nuances, the laya and bhaava of the raagam in to the song. Just traversing the swaras in the raagam here and there does not mean that u have tuned a song in that raagam. Ilayaraaja has done just that, a mere traversal through the swaras. In many places, there were apaswaras also. ARR has tuned very few songs based on Carnatic ragas but they were classics. For example Mettu podu in Anjali is a beautiful song in Ananda Bhairavi. He has brought out every nuance of the raagam in that song. Minsaara Kanna in padaiyappa is an excellent piece in vasantha. En mel vizhunda mazhai tuliye is again a beautiful piece in kaapi. A real mix of the east and west. That is what u call fusion. Ilayaraaja boasts of having composed songs in rare raagas like chala nattai, kanakangi etc. For example pani vizhum malar vanam in chala nattai is again a pure note traversal. There was no attempt to bring out the nuances in the raaga. So IR knew how to make songs sound good but ARR gives a fine polish to each and every one of his songs. IR composed music for 700 odd films. Hey Ram is his 785th film. Considering 7 songs per movie, he has tuned almost 5500 songs. Huge number indeed but hardly 5% of those songs are listenable others are 100% pure junk. But 99.9% of ARRs songs are listenable and they are also good numbers. What do you say about this?
Regards,
Anand

Ravi,
So let me get this straight, you don't want this discussion forum to function as a discussion forum, since only subbudu and Carnatic vidwans should talk about TFM? I think your seething anger led you to convolute everything you wanted to say. Anyways, nice to almost know you since you've sworn off this page.

Udhaya :
You didnt get my Point. Going by all the messages here, you think it was a discussion ? *laugh*
Why dont you look at the title of the thread ?
Why are you blind to that ?
"IR composed music for 700 odd films. Hey Ram is his 785th film. Considering 7 songs per movie, he has tuned almost 5500 songs. Huge number indeed but hardly 5% of those songs are listenable others are 100% pure junk."
Oh yeah, the whole Indian Music community (especially Tamil) was in a state of darkness or maybe their music sense was numbed since 1977 (ilayaraajas entry )i think it must be some Meteor shower that caused such a musical void in us. And Behold People !!! MR.Anand has risen from the rubbles and ashes and has woken our Musical taste with his Profound statement. Lets Bow before him.. Yeah Right !!!! I can only laugh at such topics being bestowed the status of "Discussion" where many take it as a oppurtunity to bash others.
I have been a regular here once, but havent been here since the last 2 years. Since all that happens is.. bashing one another in the name of musical knowledge. What i am trying to say is..
Please stop this anarchism. If you dont like Ilayaraaja, fine. Start another thread and discuss the subtleties of that musician there. Ilayaraaja fans start your thread and..discuss it there.
Wait a Minute. Such threads are already abound. But DEAD !!!.. Its a Cheap gimmick to start a Thread (please read the title of the thread Carefully again..there is display of arrogance, rather than really wanting to discuss something)
of this nature and start this wresting match.
Am sick of this. This aint no discussion, i am not biased. I have my own individual Music taste that grew upon me and even i cant change that if i wanted to and so do i respect others preferences.(FYI, I Listen to Ilayaraaja more than anyone else). I have visited some sites that are technical and explain the subtleties of music and the fusion thereof. But here people seem to argue for the sake of arguing than anything else.
Just tired of all this venom spit on each other in the name of discussion. The Abstract truth being.. as i said before. No amount of convicing or proof will convince me or anyone else for that matter to prove one is better than the other.
History speaks for itself, lets leave it at that.

You have re-opened a thread that has been inactive since April 19th and made statements like "Dont respond to this.. i will not visit this thread No more. Please refrain from such amaeturish display of your musical prowess in such threads."
I would like to give you the benefit of doubt - perhaps, you really didn't notice the date of the last post in this thread. If that is the case, no harm done. To err is human. If that is not the case, please do us DFers a favour and stay away - longer this time, if possible.

What a joke, irfan..... Did you even listen to Indian, which was a big hit.... Did you notice that Hey Ram, by IR FLOPPED? Have you heard of up-coming Kamal movie, Thenali, he's using ARR to salvage his losses of Hey Ram!!!!! Did you see the speech Kamal(who's an excellent Orator, by the way) at the KKKK audio release vizha?

I don't know who that talks about IR in Hey Ram.
Hey Ram cassets sales where record braking. In another interview of Thenali they say that, it was K.S.Ravikumar who went to A.R.Rahman not Kamal. They also say that Kamalukku rajavai manasila vaithukondu manin isaikku ardurathukku kastamaha irukka pohuthu.
And another news is that IR is going to score music for Kavithalayas new movie.

hey, anand you must have lot of courage to dicard isai gnani like that (well how did you find time to listen all of the 5500 songs suppose you have only two ears )seems you have found some new talents in ARR which even he woudnt aproove well i dont know about anything about ragas before you confirm your ideas better contact music reviewer suppudu you will be in for a great condemnation from that man now something from me,if you any of the IR songs just take the music without the words you can easily sing in a continues tune without any exagerration this is the unique feature of IR music that is why his music is so
natural and it is able to identify human feelings in a film which are so spontaneus which can be only complemented by continues flowing and spontaneous music that is what IR has in his music
haven't you heard how the symphony orchestra reacted after he had composed the symphony .now take ARR music at first it is a treat to ears because of its great exagerration lovely sounds which does not stand in any natural music because of these reasons every song of him has only a life time of atmost 1 year (seasonal music).those lovely sounds(thanks to computer) and exegerration wont stand long only pure music can do so that is what the greatest IR has done and will continue to do.pity for you anand because you really didnt let your mind to listen to those pure music instead you have fallen to the temptation of listening those lovely artificially manufactured sounds .and importantly nothing of ARR seems to be original (kindly go to the topic of copied tune of deva) where you will find the original source of his music that is all you can make a reply if you really can.
from a heart to heart
soul to soul

hi,
i do know whether anand has any ears to listen o good music.A good MD is one who can compose good BGMs for the movies which reflects the mood of the situation. ARR does'nt know how to score BGMs, which exibhits his lucid music talents and in this aspect Deva is Better than ARR(a Very good Sound Engineer than a MD). Don't Compare this guy with Musical Genius like IR who reflects out natural feelings and culture in his musical Composition of World class standard for which he did'nt get any recognition in India due to stupid partiality existing in the Film Industry.
IR is one of the best Musician in the World who can compose a Sympony as well Film Music.

I do not accept your view that ARR music lasts only a year. I am pleased even today when I listen to some of his numbers. Let us not get blinded and fail to appreciate the real good songs irrespective of the MD.
