What about Raga Bilawal (Jana Gana Mana)? Shankarabharanam or not?

But Jana GaNa Mana has traces of Ma2.
One of the lines in which Ma2 occurs:
PunjAba Sindhu Gujaratha marAtha goes like-SaPaPaPaPaPaMa2 PaPaPaMa2DaPa.
But may be predominantly SB.

Can anyone confirm the swaras for Patdeep and verify it for "Pon Vaanam panneer thoovudhu" by SJ from Indru nee Nalai naan? also what are the notes for Rathnakaanthi on which the song "Kungumam manjalukku" from Enga Mudhalaali is based on?

Ram,actually,the nomenclature of ragas is based on the chakras.

Ram,
The raga name Malavagaula is based on the names of regions Malava (central india, current madhya pradesh) and gaura (eastern india??). Maya was added as prefix to conform to the katayapadi scheme of venkatamakhi to denote number 15. Dikshitar's first kriti, Sri nadadi guruguho mentions "mayamalavagauladi desa mahipati pujita pradesa" meaning "worshipped by lords of malava, gaura and other countries"...
The tradition to start with MMG was first set by Purandaradasa (along with other traditions of carnatic music)

I wanted to ask this long back-kept forgetting-this nAdanAmakriya is such a fraud rAgam-ain't it?
1st of all,Sa is not a vikruthi swaram,so how can it be a criterion for distinguishing 2 rAgams?
It's all very funny-remove the higher Sa from mAyAmALavagouLa and it becomes nAdanAmakriyA!how?
May be this is where we shud apply what MS(I think)had said some time back-a rAgam is not just a set of swarams,but has a bhAvam.
I do quite agree that nAdanAmakriyA has a different "feel" from MMG.But theoretically.....

Sindhuja - it is bOngu - alright :-) but all/most songs in Naadanaamakriya are rendered in madhyama sruthi - the range/sancharas of this raga are strictly restricted to only one sthaayi/octave. The range is from Ni to Ni! you are right about the bhavam aspect for this raga - karuNa rasam is what this ragam is all about :-)

IR,Yeah...even I read it is mostly rendered in Madhyama shruthi,but this concept seems too ridiculous!How can the presence/absence of Sa ever determine a rAgam?Theoretically,even NNMK shud be called MMG??

Sindhuja - look at it as another janya of MMG - with clear grammar - it does include lower shatjam -except that there is no proyogam beyond nishadam (all prayogams - in only one octave)

If NNMK = MMG, then PunnagavaraLi = Thodi :-) I am sure you would not agree with the later as it has a distinct flavor. They are all considered janyas of their respective root raga - with limited, unique and classy prayogams!
