kaNNadhAsan--KB's kAviyath thalaivi
Hero goes abroad for higher studies. Heroine is forced to marry a rogue who deserts her with a child. She becomes a singer-dancer in Hyderabad to support herself and her child. Hero returns from abroad and tries to track her down with no luck. A friend takes the hero to watch her dance in an attempt to cheer him up. She realizes who is in the audience and sings the following song from behind the semi-transparent curtains. The song tells her entire story; the scene ends with the shocked hero finding out who she is.

Only kaNNadhAsan can write songs such as this where he becomes a screenplay writer too!
kaNNadhAsan--A.P.Nagarajan's Thillana MohanambaL
Situation: She is a Bharat Natiyam Dancer in love with a nadhaswara vidhwan. She is under orders from mean Mom not to talk to him even though they have to give a performance togeher. He is recovering from a knife wound which starts bleeding profusely as he starts playing. She stops her dance, takes a step toward him to find out how he feels, restrained by Mean Mom again, so talks to him through this song. Song: nalamthAnA

kaNNadhAsan--K.Shankar's AlayamaNi
Situation: Hero suffers from a deep-rooted, pathological possessiveness and obsession from a young age; as a child he murders his best friend for the sake of a doll he desires and is still suffering from that guilt. When he suspects his fiancee to be in love with his best friend, his possessiveness becomes murderous rage and he tries to push the friend off a cliff. Imagine his shock when he is told that his fiancee is the friend's ex-girlfriend and the friend made a sacrifice for his sake! He jumps off the cliff himself, is saved by some fisherman, has a chance to contemplate the meaning of life and finally comes to terms with Life and himself. The following song shows his joy and exhilaration at finally exorcising the "beast within" and achieving total peace. Song: satti suttadhadA

Only kaNNadhAsan can take a movie situation like this, get into the appropriate Upanishadic verses/philosophy, depict the conflict between the Ego and SupremeBeing within, take it to a higher plane and make it into a meaningful song for the masses to identify with!

kadhaiku porundhiya thiraipada paadal patri sindhikayil ninavukku varubavai.....
Nenjil or Aalayam
Hero(Kalyan Kumar) decides not to marry after his ex-lover(devika) married another guy(muthuraman).
He wants to Arpanuchufy himself to the medical field and constructs a big cancer institute. When he finds that devika has come to his hospital for muthuraman's treatment he is reminded of his love and one night he sings this song
Sung by A.L.Raghavan
"engirundhaalum vaazhga
un idhayam amaidhiyil vaazhga
manjal manathudan vaazhga
un mangala kungumam vaazhga
Varuvai ena naan thanimayil nindren

thooyavalae nee vaazhga
etriya deepam nilai pera vendum
irunda veetil oli vara vendum
potrum kanavan uyir pera vendum
pongamagale nee vaazhga"
there is one more stanza which is not in the record(LP) which i used to have and never got that line whenever i watched on the Oliyum Oliyum :))
Muthuraman asks Devika to wear the wedding saree and at that time she sings this song...
"Enna ninaithu ennai azhaithayo?
yenn indha kolathai koduthayo?
munam irundha nilai ninaithyo?
mugathay paarthukola thudithayo?
also my all time favourite in solo female is
Maalai pozhuthin mayakathilae naan
kanavu kanden thozhi
i can complete these songs once i reach home :))
This song from the movie palaivana cholai
clearly depicts the heroine's situation.
when she(suhasini) senses that hero(chandrasekar) is attracted towards her she sings this song
My all time Vanijayaram favourite
Megamae Megamae paalnila theyuthae
megamae theyinum thenmozhi veesuthae

Kanchana.thanks for the full lyrics of "Kaanavantha Kaatchi enna". One can never run out of KD's songs that fit a situation well be it an estranged wife thinking of her husband,
Kaathal Chiragai kaatrinil virithu
vaana veediyil parakkava
kannil niraintha kanavanin maarbil
kanneer kadalil kulikkava
(The height of kavithuvam is
ennangalaale paalam amaithu
iravum pagalum nadakkava),
an elder brother disgusted with the rest of his brothers and in general the superficiality in relationships
annan ennada thambi ennada avasaramana ulagathile
The disgust is very clear in
vazhum nalile koottam koottamai vanthu sergirar
parada
kai varanda veettile udaintha paanayai mathithu
vanthavar yaarada
The same message is evident in
Aadum varai aattam
aayirathil naattam
koodi varum koottam
kolli varai varuma ?
Paanayile soriruntha poonaigalum sonthamada
sothanayai pangu vecha sontham ille bandam ille
In situations where the character (kathaparthiram) in question needs solace and encouragement...
The song "Mayakkamaa kalakkamaa". The lyrics are very popular and I do not see the need to write it. Another example is when karnan has been offended, his wife attempts to console him inthe song
Kannukku kulam ethu
karunaikku inam ethu
vinnukkul pirivethu
.......... ( I forgot the line. Inputs are welcome)

Sriram, you are welcome. Agree with you about kaNNadhAsan's unmatched(IMO) prowess as a poet who can enhance a movie situation. The karNan song you've mentioned happens to be one of my PS favorites [in fact, all karNan songs happen to be my favorites.] Here are the complete lyrics:

Song: Poongaattru Thirumbumaa; Film: Mudhal Mariyaadhai
A middle-aged man who is locked into a miserable marriage out of obligation yearns for love and comfort. His yearning is noticed and consoled by an innocent farm girl who reminds him of his majesty. The song, the situation, the scene, the lyrics, IR's score are all part of a timeless movie magic. This one's for the TFM time capsule.

The line "meththai vaanginaen thookkaththai vaangalai" just bristles with wisdom and deep underlying sadness.

Song: Poomaalai; Film: Sindhu Bhairavi
The story has already been given in detail in previous postings, so I will just say that this is an asariri(omnition)song in the movie where the scenes accompanying the song depict the fall from grace of a mighty singer. VM has unfortuantely not had the luxury of working in many movies such as this where the story and situation touch on the ironies and extremes of life. No poet can conquer the listening public by writing just routine love songs. This song is a stellar example of what VM can do when someone gives him a juicy situation to write for.
