balaji, Good selection. VK is one of the most talented MDs of his days. He has certainly shown a lot of depth. kaathOduthaan is inspired a lot by the vintage R&B and perhaps Soul and jeena...
LRE does a great job. Did you notice that she sings "pEshuvEn" (as against pEsuvEn) and almost "viShiOduthaan" (as against vizhiyOduthaan) - perhaps the signature of upper middle class pronunciation of those days. LRE can most certainly sing these words clearly, but this is deliberate twist to lend authenticity to the lyrics and the situation.

Chittoor V. Nagaiah was a great composer and singer apart from being a good actor. His songs as Vemana, Thyagayya etc., are to this day very enjoyable and unforgettable. I remember reading somewhere that the great Ghantasala politely refused to sing playback for Nagaiah during the latter's later days (when he couldn't sing anymore for himself) just out of respect and admiration he had for Nagaiah's voice that could not be substituted by anyone else's, not even his. Of course, Ghantasala was later convinced and he sang a bunch of songs for Nagaiah when the latter started playing the father, grandfather roles.
If anyone is more interested, here is a superb article about Nagaiah by Randor Guy - http://www.sangeetham.com/nagaiah.htm

Kaumudi, Thanks for that link. Excellent article.
Btw, from whatever I have read/heard, the music of Ezhai Padum Paadu was by SM Subbiah Naidu. Randor Guy says it was by Nagiah & A Rama Rao.
It was for Ramnath’s Thaai Ullam that Nagiah & A Rama Rao composed music.
Sk- You must hear the song ‘Thiru Muruga endru oru tharam sonnaal’ which Nagiah sang in Ethirpaarathathu. It is an awesome display of emotional torrents, with exemplary brigas. Superb song!
Some other memorable songs sung by Nagiah:
Endha oor sondham, ingu yaarukku yaar sondham- En Veedu-1953, Music- Nagiah & A Rama Rao.
Niyayam idhudhaana- Navajeevanam-1949, Music-SVV
Ye Manitha engey odugiraai- Gumastha-1953, Music (for this song alone)-Nagiah
Thiruchendhooril aandavaney-Ethirpaaraathathu-1954, Music- CN Pandurangan
Poiyenum kaatil meithanai kondru- Viduthalai-1954, Music-Lakshman Raghunath
In later years, other singers sang for Nagiah:
Dhandapani Desigar: Aadiya paadham & Karunai kadaley – Thirumanam
TMS: Muruga endrathum urugaadho manam- Adhisaya Thirudan
Seergazhi Govindarajan: Kannan vandhaan- Ramu
Balamuralikrishna: Odhuvaar un peyar & Ambalathu Nataraja- Kannmalar
Once after attending a late night concert in Mylapore as part of the December Music Festival, as Nagiah was returning to his house in T Nagar, he found large crowds walking. He stopped and enquired and found that they were all residents of T Nagar, and had come all the way to Mylapore to hear the concerts, as there was no Sabha/ Hall in T Nagar. Nagiah was moved deeply, and set things in motion and thus Vani Mahal was established in GN Chetty Road. Vani Mahal remains to this day, catering to the music needs of the grateful T Nagar vaasis.
A great man, indeed!

Song of the Day: aattuk kutti muttai ittu from 16 vayadhinilE.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/atuk.rm
- This is my favorite song from 16 vayadhinile (more than sendhoorap poovE). An absolutely hilarious song, where the lyrics are very different from the usual run of the mill songs. Kannadasan has penned this song, letting his imagination run wild from the point of view of a sappaaNi. The objective is to make Sridevi (mayilu) laugh, and Kamal sets about with this nonsense song, his voice matched by the braying of a donkey. Malayasia Vasudevan has freaked out in this song, and IR has done a great job with absolutely no pretensions and keeping the music as close as possible to the situation's demand. I like the initial prelude, and then MV catching his sruthi.
- This was the first song for Malaysia Vasudevan.
- In an interview, Graphics artist Venky was asked about Bharathiraja's comments on graphics. BR had said that using graphics was nothing useful, and didn't serve any purpose. Venky, in an interview, rebuffed this by pointing out that this song was a prime example of imagination going wild in lyrics, and said that if one imagines the lyrics, the situations in the song will become a great graphics laden picture!
- Amar posted the lyrics of this song:
Aattukkutti Muttaiyittu Kozhikutty Vanthathunnu
Yaanaikkunju Sollakkeittu Poonaikunju Sonnathamma
Kathaiyilley Saami Ithai Kaanuthu Bhommi;
Ada Ithumattunthaana Innum Irukkuthu Saami!

bb, I remember reading in TFM archives that MV was introduced by MSV in the movie "Thalaiprasavam"(early 70s) with his first song being "Maalayittu poo mudikkum" or something like that. This is his first song for IR probably.

MV also sang
1.Suno Suno bhai -Bharatha Vilas - MSV (picturised on Major & Devika in Indhiya nadu en veedu)
2.Kalam seyyum Vilyattu -Gumasthavin MagaL-Kunnakudi .
before 16 Vayathinile.
IR used MV despite feeble protests from BR to use his good old friend SPB.Balu had to wait till "Mudhan mudhalga (Niram maratha pookal)" to break the MV hold on BR movies.(KPR,SR,PV)
MV s voice perfectly suits Kamal.A good II time lucky MV.But SJ started her dangerous experiments after the success of this song.(Poda poda pokke,Mammi peru,Kanna Nee enge...)

Sendhoorappoovae-vida idhu pidikkumaa? bb, unakku nigar neeyae. Speaking of IR's first, this movie had another regressive first for IR, his singing debut. I remember a then humble IR say in an interview, "oru nalla pattikkaattaan maadhiri kural vaenumyaa title songukku appidinnu director kaettaaru, adhaan paadinaen."
16 Vayadhinilae, aahaa ninaivuch churul neelugirathu...
-Rajini's clear Thamizh and actual acting,
-the first ever ORWO technicolor movie in Thamizh with a desert sun hue reminiscent of spaghetti westerns,
-Sridevi's konjum Thamizh (had I known every damn dubbing artist would imitate that style for the next 3 decades I would've admonished it),
-Kamal's star turn ripping off Laughton's Quasimodo and Baagappirivinai Sivaji (BR wanted to cast Nagesh in the role, but the producer said Kamal or bust),
above all though,
mayilu aathaik kadakurathu,
elani seeva seeva iduppu killu padurathu poala eththanayoa...
kannip poana andhak kannip payal manadhin kanniyamattra niraasaigalai
kavanaththudan kaniniyil mudhuguthadavip paarkiraen indru
andhap 16 vayadhu en manaveliyil
mudhiraadha kandru

balaji - this song is a prime example of keeping things simple, to the situation - one of the success secrets of IR (or MSV, for that matter). I do not expect such a song coming out of 'modern' composers - who set to score laboriously for 11 months (avaru rOmba fastu-ppa, orE varushaththila oru padaththa mudichchaaru) - flying with their keyboards between chennai, london and discovering a turkish fretted instrument and a manipuri imported female singer can add glamour to the song (and to the audio sleeves), finally going down the drain.
I read somewhere that it was SPB who was originally slated to sing this - but developed high fever and IR substitued MV in the last moment). I would love to hear this in spb's voice as well (remember "aaadi maatha kaaththadikka, vaadi puLLa cerththaNaikka" from paayum puli).
I read very recently in a BR interview it was never nagesh - it was KH all the way.
This movie also gave a successful producer in SA rajkaNNu.

its a nice folk song, like how a typical village guy attempts to sing.
this movie is a landmark one, which brought technicians of the movie to the limelight - in par with the actors and actresses. it can be easily be attributed as a movie which divides the Tamil film scene. 16V'kku mun and 16V'kku pin.
first for BR, Baghyaraj, Niwas. is it Gowndamani's first ?
first album in tfm to get Golden disc and Platinum (??).
the kathai vasanam LP of this movie was very famous too which starts with the Cholam vethakayile song and having nice BGM pieces.
