I heard this after a lonnnng time in Oli last week.. I couldnt get this song out of my mind for the next 2 days...This song would rank amongst the best of IR.. I mean if there was a IR's Greatest hits collection, this song should be in that definitely.. Thanks for this wonderful song bb...

I would have preferred the Aarabi song "Sanga/Santha kavigal paadidum" by Bramhanand (another one song wonder) to "metti oli". IR has thoroughly spoilt this melodious Jog song. SJ's caressing humming, the violin and the flute are the song's highlight.
"Maadathile kanni maadathile "(Veera), "isai paadave "(Isai paadum thenral) , "kavidhai kelungal" (Punnagai mannan) are some of the truly wonderful songs based on raag Jog.

I would like one of the upcoming SOTDs to be 'Sandhakkavigal Paadhidum' from Metti, if that is at all possible, please.
Anyway, in reference to today's SOTD, I have that song on a tape I recorded about a year ago. Super song.
Regards,
purv

What a song! Séance with one’s soul, indeed- Udhaya you said it right! Unblemished bliss, a fleeting feeling of empathy, moments of heaving excitement – in the end serene, harmonious contentment—This is not a mere song—this is an experience of all the finer feelings of life encapsulated in 4.53 minutes.
Rose Arts’ Metti- 1982 was based on a story that Mahendran wrote in the magazine Saavi. It was produced by ASG and directed by Mahendran.
A story of a mother and her two daughters- filled with heartwarming moments, followed by heart-rending calamities occurring in quick succession, and an ending that has one wondering at the futility of the proceedings—
Mahendran in his elements, with his usual paraphernalia- IR’s music, Ashok Kumar’s camera, Lenin’s editing, favorite actors like Saratbabu, Samikkannu, Haja Sheriff & Venniradai Moorthi. He gave Senthamarai an excellent cameo, as a token of gratitude for all those years when Senthamarai fed him and helped him when Mahendran was still struggling to find a foothold.
The film had 4 songs:
Metti oli kaatrodu- IR & SJ (GA)
Sandhakkavigal paadidum- Bhramanandam (GA)
Kalyanam ennai mudikka- Jency, Radhika, Rajesh (GA)
Metti metti (Ragam engeyo)- Bhramanandam, BSS, Uma Ramanan (Madhukur Kannan)
Each character was etched to perfection—Saratbabu in the role of the good-hearted Pattabhi, trying to undo the wrongs of his father; and Rajesh in the role of the timid Vijayan madly in love with Radhika, even the supporting roles like the Tea-shop Nair (Samikkannu), his assistant (Haja Sheriff), the pitiable Thangam (VA Moorthi) are all characters that linger on in memory—they are people you meet in transactions of everyday life. But the 3 people whom the story revolves around are particularly special- Kalyani Amma (Vijayakumari) and her two daughters Sulekha (Vadivukkarasi) and Preetha (Radhika)
In fact the begins with this song--darkness of dawn initially as SJ is heard humming, and as her voice rises, so does the sun, and we see silhouettes of the mother and her daughters walking along the shore, carrying pots of water. Moments of fun and frolic follow, Vadivukkarasi tries to carry Radhika and both collapse in a heap and Radhika sulks in feigned pain. The first interlude has Radhika playing an imaginary violin, while the other two applaud admiringly. Vadivukkarasi learns cycling, she then showers Vijayakumari with a rain of flowers, Radhika carries a kudam and walks blind-folded, stumbles and falls—the song ends as it began—on the sea-shore—but its dusk now—a typical day in their life has ended, interspersed with moments of tender warmth and love.
SJ’s delightful responses to IR are something that to cherish--can mere humming speak volumes--can a muted moan here, a sigh of rapture there, a stifled giggle here, a whimper of petulance here convey more than lyrics---they can- ask SJ.
An unforgettable song.

SJ's humming takes you on a space journey to ganemade and IR's voice brings you down to earth with a thud. But what a tune and arrangement.Virtually the violin tries to pick up a conversation with the listener.
Udhaya's comment on the lyrics shows his soft corner towards GA as a lyricist!Pathetic should be the word.
Vaidivu looked better than MR Radha's son clad in Gujarathi style sari and Vijayakumari. But Mahendran did fail in this movie as an inspiring persoanlity for Director aspirants. The Jency murder "Kalyanam ennai mudikka"has a nice Saradar laugh in the "Varayen thozhi". parody.
Brahmanandan was another KJY clone(beard inclusive!). Sandha Kavigal IMHO is just another one.
Could someone clarify on the Jog vis-a-vis Naatai.

Isn't Jog called Hindustani Nattai?

I heard that in Hindustani they could use both N2 and N3 which makes it a "Desiyam" (non-carnatic raga). In Naatai we use N3 only. Will that make Jog more closer to Tilang with N3 and not Naatai with N2?

Occasionaly I read messages in this page. After reading the statements on MR.AMRaja's character, I felt bad & hurt. Much paining to read the line that he was responsible for his wife to sit at home.
Firstly, I ask "whether the description of AMRaja is warranted here?". Next is "whether it is really truth?". Even it is true, "is it required to describe it here?.
Anyway something not true is here, I want to clarify. We lived in Postal & Telegraph colony at Subrayanagar,Teynampet. We were in U-Block & Mrs.Jikki's sister family lived in P-Block which is just behind our block. Madam's brother-in-law (AMRaja's co-brother) was very close friend of our family. We know what went on. It was an inter-religion marriage & as usual there was some problem at initial stages, but were sorted out. On the career side, AMRaja was very straight-forward, lost many chances & opportunities. It was not because of his attitide problem. Their relatives advised him to go well with top people in films. But he said we should be honest & open hearted. He did not go to anyone asking for chances, compromising his value. At any cost, he was not stopping his wife in her career. I have seen Madam visiting our colony many times. We have not herad that she was stuck because of her husband. A firm & nice gentleman AMR was. Later, both of them did not sit at home but together gave many music programs & came out with good lot of Christian songs. They developed very well their children Mahesh, Chandrasekar & Hemalatha.
As a friend of that family I request you all not to write on personal life. If madam's family read the stuff given out here about AMRaja, they will feel very bad. You know, Mrs.Jikki is ailing from cancer these days. Our CM also helped her immediately. All of us pray for her normal & good health.

'senthAmaraiyE...', that was a beautiful song. Sounds so much 'MSV'-ish to me, in its orchestration. If someone had asked me to guess who the composer was, I would have said 'MSV' without any hesitation ! By the bye, when did Shankar-Ganesh start composing for films ?
