raj, I have seen the original record that says 'Vichitra'. And I remember Vichitra's name being announced always whenever this song was aired on Vividh Bharathi.

Pugundha Veedu by SG was IMO from a period when they moved away from Ganesh's heavy use of percussions. IMO Naan unnai thedugiren is a better SOTD choice :-)
Saravanan, was Kannan Varuvaan also from the same period (72-73)?, as usual your write up on Pugundha Veedu was like watching malarum ninaivugal on DD.

Saravanan:
Thanks for presenting a wonderful song and also for reminding me of some of my favourite AMR/Jikki songs of the 70's. In 'kaNNA, pEsum kaNNAl, un punnagai ondrE pon nagai endrAyO' Jikki sings so sweetly; it is a wonderful thAlAttu song. Hearing the wonderful 'veettu maappiLLai' songs one feels that TFM would have gained a lot more if AMR had given music for many more movies.

By the way, isn't there a TMS version of 'naan unnai thEdugiREn'?

raja m, Kannan Varuvaan came slightly earlier- in 1970.
sk, I too like the AMR/Jikki songs of the 70s, but then as you know I like any song of the glorious 70s :))
Yes, 'Kanna pesum kannaal' is a soft lullaby, and I love the place where Jikki goes 'thanga kili konjum vizhi sollum mozhi vannam--', and her lilting humming along the chorus voices is something wonderful.
And you may be right about there being a TMS version also of 'Naan unnai thedugiren'. The record doesn't have it, though. These 5 songs are the ones that the record has, and I got them recorded long back in a shop in T.Nagar.
And let me confess that I have not seen the film either. The story I got out of my periamma (the only film enthusiast in my family)- she related it to me when we were waiting in the queue in Thirupathi last October, while the other elders looked on disapprovingly :))

Saravanan:
You are very right about the 'thangak kiLi konjum vizhi sollum mozhi vaNNam' part. It is a very sweet part. I am not sure about the version of this song in the record, but, in the movie, it is a long song (going back and forth between Kumari Padmini and Pramila) running more than 5 minutes. AMR took care to give equal amounts of the song to Jikki and PS, and the song ends with both of them singing and humming.
I saw pugundha veedu when I was in Grade 7 or 8. It is a reasonably good movie with a good screen play too. The old leper father was acted by VS Raghavan. Shankar+Ganesh appear in the mEdai where Ravichandran sings maadi veetup poNNu meenA, if I remember right.

Typical SG rhythm with nice sitar arrangements and nicely sung by AMR & Jikki.AMR's voice sounds relatively heavier than his Kalyana Parisu days.AMR could have got more songs for RaviC of 70s.Rasi nalla rasi is a superb one.( ihave been pestering Saravanan to feature that one for a while)I find the MDs'choice of his voice for AVM Rajan a bit comical.AVMR with king-sized cheeks was a paravasa kunju who will get louder and emotional at the drop of anything.AMR voice is too refined for AVMR.
The Koduthen ennai koduthen phrase shows SG's MSV's school training. We have also wondered at the name of Vichitra.Must have been a Tamil teacher in a highschool, the word play simple yet graceful.(We used listen to Horlicks kudumbam where in a character called Suchitra used to come.Names like these were not very common those days.So Raj,the name Vichitra is engraved in memory for all the vividh bharathi listeners.
RaviC by then has started soprting some of the atrocious wigs(subsequently used by Sivaji).but there was a chemistry between RaviC and Laksmi (akkarai pachai was another nice one).
Saravanan, from your list it is clear that AMR's 70s songs alone need your special writeups.

Song of the Day: naan thEdum paadham from pudhu vayal.

- Today's SOTD is a very rare song, thanks to GV for unearthing it. Sung by K.J.Yesudas, this semi-classical devotional song brings out the mood of dawn. The lyrics do not stand out, but KJY has sung it with panache. One wouldn't guess it from listening to the song, but the song was composed by Sirpi! I don't have any information about the movie.

Saravanan,
'Puguntha veedu' was a landmark film in that the tear-jerker formula to woo the 'thaaykkulam' was perfected in this film and continued for at least 4 more years (peththa manam piththu, dheerga sumangali were among this lot- all of them had excellent music, mostly S-G!). In one function celebrating the success of one such Subramania Reddiar movie, MGR spoke disapprovingly of the names indicating one's caste / community, such as Reddiar. Cho, as usual, rounded it off saying, " May be, he can call himself 'Ready-yaar', as he is ever ready to give us good films!"
As regards Vichitra, it must be a male lyricist! Because, I strongly believed that until the recent entry of the likes of 'Thaamarai', Tamil films never had a female lyricist (barring ' kungumap pottin mangalam' from 'kudiyiruntha kOyil' by a lady named ' Nazia Begum') (Again, I am not sure if I made a mistake in the name!) , though the songs of Auvaiyaar, AaNdaaL & even Kaaraikkaal ammaiyaar have been liberally used in TF!

I like today's song, 'Naan Thedum Paatham.' I guess I wouldn't have recognized the MD was Sirpi by listening to it. Anyway, a nice Malayamaarutham tune.

The song by Mahesh reminds me of "enna sugamaana ulagamoa" from Kazhugu and "kuliruthu kuliruthu" from Taj Mahal.
AMRaja criminally wasted his talents through his exile, especially as a composer. The man gave us one of the most haunting waltzes in TFM history, "nilavum malarum vaaduthu". Had he continued his career in the digital age, with orchestras and choirs at his disposal, he would've created some true magic.
The Sirpi song is a real find. This guy might have more in him, unfortunately he entered the industry as a copycat and hasn't been able to live that down.

Song of the Day: metti oli from metti.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/mettioli.rm
- A vintage IR song for the weekend. Sung by Ilayaraja himself with background humming by S.Janaki. Lyrics by Gangai Amaran.
- What can one say about this song! The song is one of the few in TFM in raga jog. The first violin interlude is heavenly. I've played only the interlude in a loop many times. The second interlude is a bit more upbeat, with SJ's humming. There is also a certain element of pathos that IR brings to the song with his singing. If ranked, this song will be among the top 5 songs sung by IR.
- Metti was an underappreciated movie by Mahendran. The film had only five characters, if I remember right, and was an intricate character study. A very different film in its time, I guess.

Inane lyrics, IR's singing, just one of these have killed many a song but both together couldn't damage this, that's the measure of this song's greatness. There are some tunes you celebrate in company. And then there are those that you reserve to drench your soul with in a pleasure too pure for open eyes. This is not a song, this is an artist's purity having a seance with your soul.
