Ninaithale Innikkum while not setting Coovam or Kaveri on fire did wonderful business in noon shows - the last refuge of youth from boring college. So it was one friday I ended up in a suburban theatre with some new friends to see this movie. The new found freedom of bunking classes did not bring with it even an iota of remorse . I was in the right college doing the wrong time. I was doing my PU in MCC so we could only gawk at the girls there -so my friends were all of my gender ;-( Be it as it may our reaction on coming out of Jyoti -parangimalai - Saravanan would have to take my word for it! was mixed sankaralingam was for the next couple of months so completely bowled over By JP - not the socialist icon- he used to frequent theatres like Subham ,Select which showed any telugu jayapradha movie. if there was disagreement it was over JayaPradha's hairstyle -Sankaralingam liked it short Ravi liked it bopped and the rest of us liked it any which way! Regarding the movie we could not decide- paravaillai seemed to be the final verdict.
those were the golden days of noon shows-pre VCR,VCD!
I have another reason to be nostalgic about this movie coming back to my beloved Pondicherry I heard the movie again at naveena theatre- I use the word heard because my mother, sister and her one year old son went to the movie ( KB padam used to be family affairs!) and my nephew started hollering no sooner than the hall darkened. so the chivalrous thambi took care of his nephew who started running around in the foyer testing the scientific principles of unstable equilibrium and centre of gravity!
How time flies, now the nephew is a gangling software professional- (don't go not one more )with an MBA from a reputed institute to boot who gives me old wordly advice on movies, music, books the works.
Yes I am left with memories- NINAITHALE INNIKUM!!!

After having his stories systamatically murdered by SPM/Panju & Co,Sujatha did try to change the pattern in 1979 with this opportunity. But unfortunately you get to listen to similar pattern like "Pitsburgh Mottai" sort in 2004.Sujatha did make a mention about MSV songs during that time in his "Sivantha KaigaL" in 1980-81.
SamBho was done by SPB in Telugu. In his Thenkinnam in 1980 July, SPB expressed his astonishment at MSV's voice range and this song in particular.SPB's imaginative modulation for Rajini and Kamal.

Ninaithaale Inikkum has got to rank as one of the worst ever movies by KB. Thankfully MSV saved this disaster. Some of Sujatha's attempts like this movie and Vikram have been nothing short of diasters.Yet another proof that KB fails when he tries his hand at making light commercial movies.
Punnagai Mannan, Duet are some of the other misadventures.

Nice write-up Sara :) IIRC, the lovely number Yengeyum eppodhum was banned by AIR those days. Bharadhi Kannamma was oft played on Sunday afternoons (4 pm); the beginning strains of music still linger fresh! In fact, used to count how many times the same music (instrumental for "adhisaya malarmugam, dinasari palaragam") was repeated at the end before the song gradually ended! Was it thirteen? I forget.
Mellisai endral idhu allavo mellisai! The numbers used to transport me to heaven, for I was a MSV-music admirer then (still am, bad (!) habits die hard!).
NI was MSV's answer to the all-pervasive music of IR in the late seventies. Good for you Sara and bb for taking us on this nostalgia trip.

IMO, one of the greatest albums ever. this album comes up frequently for discussion in the edhO niNaivugaL thread.
all the songs of this album have been my favorite of the day/week/month at one point of time or another.

My favorite songs from this movie are 'kAthirunthEn...' and 'sayonara (AgaAyathil)...'. I think both those songs were MSV's attempts to try something fresh and break out of the monotonous mold he inevetably got himself cast in his later years. Both those songs sound very non-MSVish to me.
I remember seeing the drummer of that movie in a street near my friend's house at Mandaveli. I couldn't recollect who he was when my friend asked me if I knew who he was ! I dont think he acted in any other movie, after all the sensation he ought to have created in this movie. All I could remember of the movie was the songs ! Not even Jeyaprada, who I believe, became impressive to me as she aged !

Was Noolveli(1979) a KB film? Nizhal nijamaagiradhu was also around this time

Yes, Noolveli was indeed a KB film! Nizhal Nijamagiradhu was released around '77. Thillu Mullu, Agnisatchi, thappu thaalangal (I believe), thanneer thanneer, Achamillai achamillai all came after NI.
Believe me, I am listening to Nizhal Kandavan for the first ever time today! I am absolutely enchanted with the tune and haven't stopped rewinding yet (about a dozen times already!).
A twenty five year old MSV number sounds great even today. Sriram, I absolutely agree with you re this album.

Saravanan: Great write-up on NI and looking forward to the next instalment. I recall the reviews (music) for NI. while even the generally anti-MSV Ananda Vikatan praised it, Kumudam gave a big thumbs down (Then Panjam is what the reviewer wrote!!).

25 years of inikkum ninaivugaL - II
from ninaiththaalE inikkum
- Saravanan continues:
The four friends visit a nightclub, and are outraged to find Sona among the dancers. Chandru, in particular, is broken hearted at this unexpected turn of events.
Meanwhile, we get an insight into the aura of enigma surrounding Sona. We find Nicky (a guy who has been ominously shadowing Sona and Chandru everywhere) asking Sona for some ‘packet’, and Sona explaining that Chandru hasn’t brought that guitar from Madras. Nicky doesn’t buy her story, and jabs her with a needle.
Next morning, Chandru is shocked to discover Sona huddled in a heap on the road, and drags her to a nearby park. She seems to be in a drunken stupor; Chandru is disgusted at her inebriated state and walks off in a huff. Sona lures him back with this song of debauched abandon—
7. Anandha thandavamo:
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/anandhath.rm
The mystery deepens as Chandru is beaten up next. And at last a remorseful Sona reveals all- apparently she had lost all her money in Madras, and this Nicky had offered her return airfare if she would smuggle in a small packet inside Chandru’s guitar. And that was why she broke into his room in Chennai. To her dismay, Chandru didn’t bring that guitar to S’pore, and it was to repay Nicky’s money that she was dancing in the nightclub. All clouds of mistrust get cleared.
To matters perfect, Deepak catches Nicky trying to surreptitiously enter their hotel room, and after a preamble of elaborate Bruce-like movements, clobbers him in style--
8. Thatti kEtkka:
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/thatti.rm
And unceremoniously hanging him upside down, Deepak sends for the police.
The four friends, along with a radiant Sona, are all set to enjoy the rest of their stay, and go about painting the town red. Sentosa Island welcomes the joyous revelers--
9. Yaadhum Oorey:
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/yaadhum.rm
In an intimate moment in a cable car, Chandru proposes to Sona, but she demurs telling him not to build castles in the air. Later, Chandru brings up the topic again, but Sona cleverly puts him off by challenging him to lie still for 3 hrs, and making him lose the wager by suddenly declaring that she has consumed poison--naturally a shaken Chandru gets up, falling for her ruse. Yet he doesn’t lose hope, and their romance continues, as they sing this bewitching duet:
10. Bharathi Kannamma:
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/bharathi.rm
But his bliss is soon shattered --Sona informs him that her days are numbered as she is suffering from leukemia. An incredulous Chandru takes this as the next among her numerous inventions, but Sona seems serious as she solemnly avers that it was indeed the truth. Chandru doesn’t know what to make of this latest cruel twist--
11. You’re like a fountain:
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/fountain.rm
Chandru is now convinced that Sona is speaking the truth. He wants to take her to the best doctor in S’pore, but Sona refuses, telling him wryly that it was the best doctor who had given up on her. She is resigned to her impending end, and tells Chandru to go back to India, while she passes on to heaven. The two of them weep together, as they recall the wonderful 3 weeks they had spent with each other, what precious memories--ninaithaalE inikkum--
12. Ninaithaale Inikkum:
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/ninai.rm
Chandru takes an impulsive decision to take back Sona with him and marry her. But when he asks her father for his permission, he realizes that Sona has been pulling his leg again, for her amused father informs him that there is nothing wrong with her health, further, she’s betrothed to her cousin Vinod! Chandru is thoroughly disillusioned, and soon afterwards, they all leave Singapore.
As the flight soars in the sky, Chandru is down in the dumps, for he has left his heart behind--
13. Sayonara:
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/sayanora.rm
It is then that a sheepish Deepak hands over a letter to Chandru that Vinod had given to him. Deepak had forgotten all about it! Chandru reads the letter and is elated, for Vinod had written relinquishing his claim to Sona, and telling Chandru that Sona is really in love with him. Chandru is overjoyed.
And when he reaches home, his cup of bliss is full—the ever-unpredictable Sona is already there, having reached Madras by an earlier flight! She still maintains that she is sick, but expresses her wish to be part of the music band. And so the ensemble, with the new addition, travel from place to place, performing to packed halls--
14. Inimai niraindha ulagam:
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/inimai.rm
But Sona’s time is running out, and the doctors at HM Hospital in Madras too shrug their shoulders and point upwards. But inexorable destiny knows no second thoughts, and Sona’s condition deteriorates. Despite the nearing end, Chandru goes ahead with his decision and weds Sona, watched by his tearful mother and friends. And so Sona passes away peacefully, her last days filled with love and bliss.
* * * *
Chandru’s flashback comes to an end--Sona lives on in their memories, as they continue to make wonderful music--for the show must go on--
-----------**--------------------------------------------------------------------**------------
25 years have gone by, yet fond memories of ninathaalE inikkum endure—I was part of a big group of cousins who were enjoying the annual vacation in my aunt’s house in Pollachi. I was going to 4th std, and though among the youngest in the gang, I was already an avid tfm fan. I can still recall the high expectations amidst which ninaithaalE inikkum was released on Tamil New Year’s day, all of us going traveling to nearby Coimbatore to see it, and being dazed by the hypnotic spell of the songs. The film left a lasting impact on our impressionable minds, and the rest of the holidays passed in animated discussions regarding all aspects of the film, the stunning vistas of Singapore, and of course the songs--
For starters, we eschewed the ‘da’ suffix and latched onto ‘la’ as a more avant-garde suffix of address--- then we drove the elders to helpless rage by answering any uncomfortable query with a take-off on Sona’s enigmatic two-way nod--- and also adopted a casual shrug of the shoulders accompanied by a stylish ‘siva sambO’ to any accusation of misdemeanor--- Of course, we had to repeatedly enact poor Rao’s ‘kudichittu pesaREnnu ninaikkadha--excuse me’ dialogue, always followed by that hiccup--- Our female cousins poured scorn on Jayapradha’s short hair style (pure envy, we declared, as we looked with distaste at their well oiled and primly ribboned long braids)--- Heated exchanges that were sparked off by one cousin hinting that ‘sayanora’ was inspired by ‘mamamia’, and another drawing similarities with ‘mil gaya hum ko saathi’--- I also remember petulantly wondering why I didn’t have a trendy name like Chandru or Deepak--- and sulking at the imponderable ways of the elders, when instead of praising me for an brilliant rendition (accompanied by strumming of an imaginary guitar) of ‘sambO sivasambO’, I was sternly rebuked for daring to sing impudent lines like ‘appavum thaathavum vandhaargaL pOnaargaL!’
Soon afterwards I had to part with my cousins as we went abroad, but I clutched tightly onto the precious memories of the summer of ’79---
ninaithaalE inikkum!

Can't forget the song "Ninaiththaale Inikkum" sung by SJ & SPB, which consists only of humming & the words "Ninaiththaale Inikkum" - the variations are really unforgettable! And of course the way SPB varies each repeat line he sings in "Bhaarathi Kannammaa" - leaves one speechless!!!
