Adi,
This is in response to your question about sound design. I don't claim to be a good composer, since I have not yet released more than 3 tracks in the last 4 years. So, I don't want to claim what I think is right.
While complex sound engineering techniques will sound 'intelligent', unless used with utmost clarity, I think it can lift off the mood of the song. Sometimes, even the simplest of panning effects can do all the talking in music scores. I am in for good sound design, but personally I don't think Rehman can be termed a good composer just because he uses some 'amazing' sound engineering.
Composing music has, I think, left it's simplicity in expressions, to complexity in flexing sound powers. I somehow liked the former, where in human feelings hold a more important meaning than sound engineering. Just my opinion

Eswar:
Sound Engineering is just one of the aspects of the Sound Design. Good to know ur opinions on this topic. As we delve deeper into composing music...one would appreciate the other aspects of the sound design. Catch u later. I am sure Sound Design's objective is not to give less important to the human feelings...

I'm also very new to this field...but there a few things that realized right away.
A mix can really make or break a song. It can make a dull track
sound exciting and fresh. Sometimes its only when you experiment
with the track that you realize how much better it can sound..unless you're
a recording pro.
Also, talking about sound design, there's a lot to learn about how to make
a track sound "full"..in many tracks there are a lot of textures in the background
which you hear only when you concentrate...else you hear only the
final overall effect. It unnoticeable when you hear it as a whole but you take
it away..and you'll feel its empty.

Guys:
If u're familiar with Korg family of Synth Modules...it would be a good interview to read the man who designed the combis and sound patches for korg ( including triton ). Also in general it gives an idea/approach to make the sounds and the market for it. Look at it to use it in your sound design.

Very good article Aditya. Thanks.
Also, the latest edition of Electronic Musician(Jan 2002) has a supplement with it - "Desktop music production guide"..very informative..it explains many aspects of recording with PC.

Hi,
I am no musician myself but I did have the good fortune to produce a Tamil devotional album "Samarpanam" of my wife , Anitha. Song samples can be heard at
http://www.anithakrishna.com/albums.html . Would like to get some feedback and also some tips reaching a wider audience when the musicians are relatively unknown.

Krishna, excellent rendering by your wife, Anita, great voice.... good work on the album... may be she could work with some of the talented composers we have in this thread and come out with more albums in future... Good Luck to her...

Mr.Krishna,
Your collection was a pleasant change from the kind of music found among the composers here. I thought the guys here make the best use of electronic sound synthesizers in fusion kind of music and your album was different to hear with the original instruments. The Veena and the flute were perfectly handled and Ms.Anita sounded very professional in her voice. A typical semi-classical devotional album. Nice to know such albums are produced in US too.

Can anyone tell me the carnatic rthym equivalent in western music
Chathuswaram equivalent is 4/4 ?

UV San:
I am sure you would know what I am talking about...Just in case...
Rhythm equivalences with WM always go with the time signatures. Here's one of the ways of representing equivalences with the time signatures with least possible units
Chathurasram - 4/4
Thisram - 3/4
Misram - 7/4
khanda - 5/4
Popular Music is based on Standard Styles and 7/4 and 5/4 styles are not used commonly in WM. And so any kind of style that we take would either fall in 4/4, 3/4 or 2/5 in least possible units. I mean commercially off the shelf styles would be one of them or multiples of them. They map directly with 8beat, Waltz, Rock etc in the popular styles.
However good Software/Synth/Arranger Sound Modules shall give us programming tools to make our own styles with any kind of time signature. And ofcourse with the natural instruments, u can see the best of all being sky as limit.
Sridhar Seetharaman has done some stuff like "Why Not" - he may elaborate on programming Misram.
Regards,
Aditya

Hi Guys:
Here's my new Score ( in the real sense )..."Miss You" - I humbly dedicate this song to all husbands who miss their wives when their wives visit india alone:-)) However the main theme is just missing somebody who's very close to you - so it's easy to relate. You know that the separation is only for a while but how we get along with that state is the theme of the song. This song is complete in all respects and ready to go online. This will demonstrate certain cool concepts that we have in carnatic classical music ( GrahaBhedam ) Charukeshi and GowriManohari are the main ones here. Enjoy the Song. Let me know your feedback.
