Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

NeelD, Thanks for the song 'Mazhaik Kaalam'. I haven't listened to this song in more than almost 25 years! Aana konjam vegamaa pOgudhu.
In Kavidhai KeLungaL, that part where it starts as "Jagana jagana" - is it Hindustani? If so, then we understand why IR chose Vaani! Again, are you sure it's a "non-stop" 50 sec stretch? Just checking.
My all time favourite song of Vaani is "Megame Megame". The solos she has sung for MSV are all true gems one must possess. Of IR's songs,
"Poon Thendrale" is a rare gem I love.

Check out the Neela review in The music magazine (www.themusicmagazine.com) It says "Vani Jairam pervades the album!" and has not "lost any of her form" - is that a compliment or what!!!
If Vani is to come back to singing in TFM - The TFM music directors should have the good sense to approach her. I doubt if it will ever be the other way around. When you are THAT good, you are always THAT good! Perhaps, that is the problem with the current TFM music scene...they don't understand the privilege of having a singer like VJ in their midst - and she is not about to cast pearls before swine either!

Thank you, Ramki. Yes that is the song! the Uyire Urave song is from Dhuram Adhigamillai. Vani also sang the title song for the film Idhayam Oru Kovil - but like the Nandhaa song it was not in the movie nor on the audio cassette. If I am correct, isn't Kavithai Kelungal her last outing with Illaiyaraja?
Vani has also sung many songs that have one or two of english phrases (more than any other tamil singer in movies ): I can think of Thangamagan, Tharaiyil Vazhum Meengal, Vannakkathukkuriya Kadhaliye, Oru Kaidhiyin Diary, Unnai Naan Sandhithen, Darling3,... are there others to add to this list?

Neel D:
I heard the song you posted a link too. Do u have a better link? It sounds somehow off key in places - bad sound quality.
PS:
Are there any more new movie VB has composed for apart from Neela (from any of the 4 languages)

A few MSV gems featuring VJ (all duets, which are better then her solos IMHO) :
`iRaivan irandu bommaigaL seidhAn thAn viLaiyAda, avai iraNdum sErndhoru bommaiyai seidhana thAm viLaiyAda...un vAi mozhi mullai, ini thAi mozhi illai' (uyarndhavargaL)
`idhu iravA pagalA...nee nilavA kadhirA?' (which movie is this from, great song -esp the replay of the saranam lines with lovely humming / trumpet background)
`malairAni mundhAni sariya sariya' (orE vAnam, orE bhoomi with Jolly Abraham's `lalalla lalalla')
`andhamAnaippArungaL azhagu' & `ninaivAlE silai seidhu' (Both from andhamAn kAdhali, will get into anyone's top 20 MSV numbers, such lovely tunes, excellent arrangement, flavour of the soil, choice of KJY/VJ -despite the therukkOil:-))

even `thirumAlin thirumArbil sreedEvi mughamE' (thirisoolam) is an equally good number, but the no. of times one was made to hear this song (radio, functions etc.) finally made me tell `oh enough':-) I'd love to hear this now because it's long time since last heard ....

I think Kavidhai kelungal was the last song of VJ with Ilayaraja. Whenever I hear the song i get goosebumps. Particularly the last part -omtha theemtha --- then the song goes little low pitch-paarimeedhu pavazhamalligai pathiyam pottathaaru-this transformation is amazing also a very difficult one.But VJ's rendition was truly flawless.
Also song Ennulil-throught the song its her voice that dominates a soulful rendition.
Even her very first song-Bolure pappi-was awesome.
Some of her songs
Honey honey thitthipathu-based on HOney Honey song from ABBA
Not a day passes when I wish VJ starts singing in TFM aagain.

"Rajathi Kungumam Sriungaaram" is another nice duet by VJ/SPB from Mangala Vadhyam. Music: MSV
VJ also sang a few good songs for the film Shanti Muhurtham (Dir: Sripriya - music - S-G?).
Which film does this song belong to:(VJ/SPB duet it think)
Oru Devan Vandhan
Manakovilil (?) Nindran
Avan Raman Avatharam
Indha Janaki Avan Tharam
Poongaatru Veesum
Ananda Ponmalai Neram
(Is this from the film Ambigai Neril Vanthal * Ambika, Radha, Mohan - music: Illaiyaraja)
Or have I got the wrong movie?

A digression... a note on S Janaki by VijayaBhaskar: 'She could start on the second harmonium key and touch ma and pa in the next octave...' - what does this mean?

Was "Yengey Naan Kaanbaen Yen Kaadhalan" from Sadhanai the last song by VJ-TMS as a team? I am listening to it right now...the interlude alaap by VJ is amazing.

I just saw that the Vani Jairam has become a NEW news item on the TFM homepage...is this because this thread is really doing well? Or has VJ returned to Tamil Film Music scene?

I happened to listen to a nice song "vA iLamai azaikkiRathu" yesterday on Oli 96.8. It was sung by VJ/SPB/PS/TMS for the movie "engammA sabatham".
Naaz, I guess you revived this thread and brought it to prominence. I hope the TFM people who visit this site will wake up and starting seeing real talent.
Karthi, Please thank KS for the link to "mazhaik kAlam varuginRathu".

thanks Neel D,
Although I don't think one person can take credit for the success of this line. There are so many avid and well-informed participants in this thread such as yourself, Ramki, AVR, Priya, Balaji - and many others, who have kept up their postings and have shared their memories/musings on VJ. I wish we could get a print-out of this entire thread and send it to VJ as a New Year Parisu! Show her how much she is being missed - and how much we all want her back in Tamil Film Music! (Could we ask the administrators of this site to do that for us? Will they oblige?)

Hi Naaz, that's a very good idea - to send this page as email to VJ. But, one must remember to censor indecent remarks if any. And that song in Sadhanai - it was by MV and not TMS. After TMS, it was MV who took over to sing songs for Sivaji!

Naaz:
(On a +ve note this time)
Why have you included ME in the list of people to have revived the thread???? (Have I caused so much trouble :-))) ???) (However if a printout is sent to VJ, she might not be too happy about a few things I have said.)
However whatever I have written, I feel HONESTLY SINCERELY from the bottom of my heart. Ever since 1 or 2 years, VJs Tamil songs have become a part of my life.
Although I do disagree with you on many issues,be assured that I feel VJ,KJY,SPB are the BEST singers, if their songs in the *South* are compared to Manna Dey,Rafi,Asha and Lata's songs in Northern languages.
However the credit of reviving the thread goes to you. I have come to know about many VJ songs from you, and quarrel or no quarrel, I have tro thank you for that. (But cut my part if u are sending her a printout - though I stick to whatever I have said, I do not wish to hurt her!!)

For a long time I was waiting for an opportunity to discuss VJ's songs and this thread has been really great and has brought back my memories about the days I used to enjoy listening to her Hindi songs in Vividh bharati's manchahe geet-those times almost everyday they played bolure pappi, her meera bhajans and yesudas's Kakagaroon sajni.
Again in the evenings from 4.30pm-5.30pm there was always a VJ's song either in Tamil/kannada/telugu/malayalam in the evening Vividh bharati-I forgot the name of the prog.
I wish VJ see this thread and I wish other MDs-the current generation MDs see this thread and give more opportunities for VJ.
Again around 2 years back when I was in Canada i watched VJ's interview in one of the sat. hindi prog-Good morning India. The interview was in Hindi and VJ spoke in 100% Hindi. Actually the person who interviewed her seemed surprised about her Hindi knowledge (I thought it was pretty dumb).VJ sang a few lines of bolure pappi and some of her meera bhajans. It was a great feeling to listen to her after so many years.

AVR, your interest has sustained this thread, and is a welcome change - where people generally do the chat thing only to kill time. Your intertest has been genuine and heartfelt from the very beginning (when I joined the thread.) Your views are also worthy - even if they are not full of praise, I think VJ can handle a bit of criticism. She should know if her Hindi is good bad accented awful unlistenable or all of the above in little ways. So rest easy. The idea of a print out was just that - I am awaiting a response from the administrators....you think they will take it upon themselves to do the deed? That would be so cool!
Naaz
