Some memories on 16 Vayathinile:
1.When Kamal s stills with the "Minimal Basic Indian Costume" appeared in Mags people got curious.Heard that When BR/Rajkannu showed the stills to Charu Hassan he was furious and told them that they are not doing any good for Kamal s career.
2.Aatha Adu Valatha,Atha naan passayitten ,Eva Aathalukke Dhawani kattina,Manja Dhawni potukalama and "Ethu eppadi irukku" became cult dialogues. But the last one survives even today.I had a chance meeting with Kalaimani-should i say i accompanied a person who had a meeting with Kalaimani in early 1990s!He elaborated on how the RK s character was developed from his "Village Perusu".Seeing that I felt Kalaimani himself would have done RK s role more effectively.
3.The "Ryan s daughter" was definitely the influence.Rupavahini once showed this movie in 1986/1987.I wish to see that again.
4.BR originally named the story "Mayilu" only.Kamal surpised BR by telling the story end -BR had discussed the same story with Kamal in early seventies with Kamal himself and completely forgot the incident.
5.This movie is a landmark for darker reasons as well: Pandyan express became crowded on the up.The pseudo-gramathu kathai of Tamil films made a slow entry.Stalwarts like Pandian/Sudhakar got into films paying cash and we paid penalties!
6.I remeber reading this:
A Naive rich young man from some Madurai village with MAttu vandi loads of rice as seethanam reached Sri s house and asked for her hand.Sri s mother explained this incident.A nice backdrop for a short story .Prob he would have named his adughter Sridevi!
7.Watch "Premi" (Mahendran s sweet heart!) in manja Kulichu.Saw a tired old Premi in some serial last week...times!
8.The only person who never made it big depsite a good role in the movie was "Satyajit" the Doctor.36' Bells,Front pocket,Periya Kannadi -Sutha Saundarya Rowdy Lakshanam!
9.Vikatan s review was a key.I think they gave a 60+ (same for Uthiri pookal).
10.Travelling by Train to school, you find loads of Manja dhawnis in the ladies compartment,Parattias on the footboard and "Doctor" with a comb in the hip pocket in the next compartment.
Senthurappove vida Aatu kutti ...BB has the veto?
Udhaya
"Regressive" first ...I like that!

Geeth, several highs for disc sale were not first achieved by 16V but by Ulagam Sutrum Vaalibhan. USV was so popular even in 1983 that I recall my friend - who was running a music shop in Kumbakonam - would sell USV LPs only packed with a couple of junk singles to 'sound service men' (who play them on loutspeker during marriages). I recall another LP to go only as a package deal was shankaraabharanam (for a short period though). Those days album sales was not directed by end users (who only listen them in Radios), but by loutspeaker men. Shank.. had this excellent 'go for all situation' quality/value for them - they would play that on a markazi morning, take it to the marriage, play it in schools, play it just before the crowd builds up to listen local politicians. I and my friend once drove a loutspeaker friend with a bet, he won it playing shankaraabharanam just before a dravidar kazakam meeting. When someone objected to it, he tran-slated (sic) the lyrics for them, saying that the whole movie places music above god. Luckily for him the movie was not yet released in Kumbakonam. Music above all :))
And my friend would remove the posters/goodies of USV and Shank... from inside the records and pass them to me. If they demand the posters - they don't get the LP.
Earliest days of evils of recording/distribution industries, I personally remember (as was a part of it!).
I had a collection of several such surreptitiously passed record sleeves, posters, post cards and other memorabilia (USV, 16V, ShOlaay, Karz, Qurbhani, Yaaranaa, Ek Thuje.., ShankarAbharanam, Thyagaiah, MurattukkaaLai, Guru, Paayum puli, ... Vikram, my collection ended up with an excellent poster of Kamal/Sridevi - Hare Radha Hare Krishna. I vividly remember this poster as the only krishna with mustache I ever came across). The posters never saw the walls of the day - my grandmother would not approve it :(
I never knew that ebay would come one day :))

Thanks for this Riddle in a Song as Song of the Day. A fun, frothy song by SJ and MVD. I've always found MVD to be great in such numbers - From Aatukkutti to Kattavandi Kattavandi, from Kadathengaiyo to Aapakkada Annakkili - the earthiness, the tenor, the aural machismo of a roadside romeo...MVD put the zest back in testosterone. Wonder why he is has been sidelined these days - I mean, isn't his tamizh spot-on compared to the Udits, Sukhs and Sonus who get these songs today - and get it all wrong like always?
The "Pavadai Nanaiya Koodadhu" line from 16P found a colloquial (and risque) companion in "Ennakkum Manja Dhavani" from Azhiyadha Kolangal.
16 Vayadhu. Azhiyadha Kolam.
Touche!

Good one again, bb! Thanks.
Liked Amar’s post too- the lyrics, along with the other aural accompaniments!
Since he has added the ‘bray—bray’ (wonder why he left out that ‘Brrr’ finish!), he should have included that ‘bow’ ‘bow’ after “Chinna kuttigalin mel aanai’ and ‘Indha sattigalin mel aanaai’ , and also that ‘mey’ before ‘Kaakai illa seemaiyile kaaterumai meeikkayiley’ too! ( The song seems like the Tamil version of ‘Old McDonald had a farm’, with all its sounds!)
MV does a great job, and so does SJ. When Kamal and Sridevi get to see who is the female who is singing, they are taken aback that it is an old woman who’s singing ‘En kanni mozhi kelungalen’. SJ gives a wistful perumoochu in between the quivering ‘Pazhaya nenappu da peraandi’. SJ is Sridevi's voice too in the song- the surprised exclamation after ‘Motham irubathiyaaru’ and the peals of laughter in the end.
Vijay- This was not MV’s first song for IR either, though this was the song that made him popular. MV had earlier sung for IR in Uravaadum Nenjam (‘Dear Uncle---’ with Poorani & Indira) and Badrakali(‘Otha rooba’-with SJ)
GCT_Kuil: I wish I knew that!

Great posts, guys!
Saravanan, i disagree with you on SJ. kizhavi koralle paadaradhukku oru kezhavi-yai pidikka mudiyaadhaa (like thEni kunjaramma of those days). I can't stand to count the number of songs that SJ has killed with her amateurish mimicry.

Another 16V titbit comes to mind - Rajnikant says 'Ithu Eppadi irrukku' in the movie 16 times.

16V is also notable for graamaththu characters like Kuruvammaa (Ganthimathi). In a scene, Rajini says "Kuruvamma-vaa, ava thanjaavooru thavilu" !!
I think it is also the first big break for Koundamani.

bbji,
Your pick of PV is terrible. How could you bye-pass 'Senthoora poove',
'Sevvanthi poo mudicha' or the kick start of
'Solam vedhakkaiyile' ??? which straight away carry me off to my native village Bhagavathipuram

Oh, I forgot 'Manja kulichu'. Esp I liked the ending part - transition from a teasing song to a gentle romantic feel, after the line
'Azhagappa , azhagappa aanazhagan neeyappa', the music that follows with 'Manja kulichu..
ponnil kudameduthu vanna neereduthu
en aasai kannanukku
ennam pole neeraatuven'.SJ's superb rendition fits Sridevi like glove.

Any insider information on the defunct movie, "Bagavathipuram Railway Gate"? Appidi enna special unga oor Railway Gate-la?
Yes, there was a movie by that name if you guys don't know. IR was the MD. It had a great duet song, "Kaalai nera kaatrae vaazhthich chellu" with hip veenai usage.
