  I am just a beginner in Carnatic Music ; also irregular visitor of this page.Last time when I went to India, I bought following books from HigginBothoms, MountRoad Madras.

  Hi guys,
  Though the "Aathadi" matter seems to be solved, here is some more info I found about the scale on which it is based:
  
  For theory sake, if we take r3 as g2 and note the scale it is: s g2 m1 d2 n2 s+. I was going thru my collection of articles yest and found this scale named as sUrya. Its janaka would probably be Kharaharapriya. There is a page by Krishna Kunchitapadam, (i dont have the site now, you may probably know it already or find a link in any populat carnatic music site) on pentatonic ragas. This is where I found ref to sUrya, and interestingly, there is not a mention of prakshanaavathy raga. Should be a rare raga indeed.

  Soorya I think is S G3 M1 D1 N2 - Hindolam except for G3. 'isayarasi ennaalum naane' is in this raagam.

  If Aathadi starts with Sa, then you have N3 creeping in , in which case it will not be vagatheeswari. To me, the pallavi goes like this.

  sssp ppps+ s+s+n3

  Don't know if this was ever discussed:
  
  One of the earliest instances of grahabhedam in IR's work was the song vaidegi raman in pagal nilavu. This song is in kalyani (in D sharp I think, but of course I could be mistaken; like ARR I sing in D) Towards the end of the first charanam, IR drops the Sa by a semitone, to D, and produces swaras in Hanumathodi (the 8th melakarta scale). And, even more beautifully, in the swarams in the second interlude there is a wonderful interplay between the two scales. The whole thing is too wonderful. SJ has done a terrific job: try singing this to see the difficulty of maintaining the scales...
  
  While IR has gone on since to do more complex stuff with tonal shifts, this one charms me even today.
  
  Does anybody know of such work in the music of G. Ramanathan (another great favourite of mine)?

  Guys, somebody stated that "Katrukkenna Veli" from "AvargaL" was set to Niroshta. I tried playing it on my KB yesterday, the result was Bhala Nandani which is a Janya of Karahapriya. It was nothing but KH priya without a Da. If you start the song from Pa, the resulting raga is Gopika Vasantham, which is nothing but Hindolam + Pa or Natabhairavi without a Ri. Experts please confirm.

  i know that what i am going to write doesn't belong here, but i hope to get some clarification.
  
  I have a question regarding the song aruNa kiraNa dhIpam of guru (malayALam). the song seems to start off in the usual 4/4 beats (chathusra Ekam?!) but immediately after that hE... shouting [:-)], it seems to change to 3+2+2 beats (classic thripuda thALam) and stays in the same thALam till the end. i remember someone else writing that the song is in misra chApu (how was this arrived at?), but i think it's not any kind of chApu. can anyone pleae confirm/correct me? thanks.

  bb: Vaanathin Meedhu is in Maand too, you are right about the similarity. Another Maand is Murali Dhara Gopaala. It is a janyam of Sankarabarnam and comes sown as Sankarabarnam, I'm not sure of the Aarohanam off hand!

  Ramaswami: Minsaara Poove is by no means Hamsanandhi, it's in Basanth(because of the Hindustani Aalaps), but is better known as Vasantha, as it's predominantly set in Vasantha.

  Saketh/Vasu: The last Raga in Chinnanchiru is NEELAMANI, similar sounding to Sivaranjani - the song Nalamthaana in Thillana Mohnaambaal is in the same Neelamani Raga.
