saw 'thodarum' recently and shocked.
raaja has lifted a rahman tune from rangeela.
the song 'tappankuthu pattu' from 'thodarum' is a straight lift from 'rangeela re' of rangeela.
i think raaja tried to follow rahman but could not succeed.

hunter,
I agree with you !
That song you are mentioning is from 'ThalaimuRai' - not thodarum - In my review of this album, I mentioned that the pallavi of this song is copied from a BGM in 'Rangeelaa Re' song !
But I don't think he tried to **follow** arr (Too less examples for this), May be its pure co-incidence !

I was listening to 'keLadi en paavaiye'(gopura vaasalile)
The pallavi is exact replica of 'yaaradi nee mohini' esp the portion 'moham konda podhum dhaagam vandha podhum ' (similar to 'aasaiyuLLa raani anjidaamale nee')
You can listen to the gopura vaasalile song here:

Malayil Yaro (Kshatriyan) largely follows Karnan 's Kangal enge song.Same Raga, Agreed! But the gap is too small to be left out.
Same is the case with Sivakami Aadavanthal (paatum bharathamum) and Thoongathe vizigal (Agni Nakshthram).Particularly the first 2 lines!

Guys,
here is my humble opinion. There should be a clear distinction between 'copying' and 'inspiration'. 'copying', is when someone just lifts and has no contribution of his own creativity. 'inspiration' reflects a composers taste in certain original creation and wants to add his direction of experience. now, there can be a range between the two.
well, there are only seven basic notes and everything that can be created has been done already (i don't belive in this). however, how about many genuine original young composers who try to create something new but fall out because it doesn't sound anywhere close to the popular well known tunes. do people have an intrinsic archaic genetic predisposition towards liking a song because their ancestors have liked and appreciated a tune in their lifetime.
so, very sad isn't it??????? How many of you in this thread are here just for the sole reason of being clever in catching the copycats.

There seems to be a Capitalist 'M'usicfan who seems to be a cross between a prolific medical journal writer and a Frustrated Practising CA; and a small 'm'usic fan who still hunts down the copycats.
"M"usicfan-You are right! At times the hunting excercise seems pointless and poses the eternal question "What are trying to prove? and to Whom?"
There is nothing clever about catching the copycats. But this TFM forum has broadly become a two party system with ARR and IR fans. One wants to outdo the other by hunting down the copied songs.(The old songs fans have sided with ARR ... like me!)So the hunt goes on and rejoinders and counter attacks just galore! The side effects are that,in order to find out the copies people have started listeneing more, which is good.We see some good writeups from people who really understand music. The flip side is this has deepened the divide.
I think time has come to join hands fight out the real enemy, the HINDI songs.
musicfan-Rock'n Roll and Boogie Woogie are the parents of Rambumbum and Viswanathan Velai venum.

Deva's 'Aval varuvala' number (from the movie Nerukku Ner) is widely believed to be copied from Bob Marley's 'Get up stand up'. Is that so? I don't think so! Only the 'get up stand up' refrain has been used in the Tamil version as something that goes 'nenjai allum....' - rest is ever so incomprehensible! The rest of the song is nowhere close to the Bob Marley number! But going by Deva's track record, there could be one more inspiration in the same song! You never know!

Have you heard the starting tune of 'Bolu sajni' in the film 'Doli sajakae Rakhna' or the tamil equivalent song 'Velli nilavae'.
I think it resembles the starting tune of a Ilayaraja number in the film 'Chembaruthi':the song 'Sembaruthi poovu pennoruthi poalla'....

I always thought the opening lines of the "Aval Varuvaala" number in "Naerukku Ner" was lifted straught from "Awara Hoon....Awara Hoon" from Shri420(?).

Another copied song, which may be in the 'records' already.
I don't know the movie or the md, but it's an old tamil song tat goes something like this:
"sinnapen aana pothile, amma vidam... venilaa nila en kannallavo.."
The tune was entirely lifted from the old english song, "Que Sera Sera" and even the lyrics seem to have similar meanings. For the english song, pls check this link: http://www.geocities.com/SouthBeach/Lagoon/5162/song.html
Wud anyone know the movie title or the md of the tamil song i'm talking about?
It's a real lovely song, both the english one and the tamil 'version'.

btw, i jus realised tat in the link i gave above, the tune and the song (Que Sera Sera) details r correct, but it's just another version of the original song.
Here's a better link for the original lyrics: http://www.geocities.com/merrystar3/allysongs/QueSeraSera.htm
and I believe the link for the mp3 (yet to verify): http://www.reelclassics.com/Audio_Video/Music7/clips/dorisday_queserasera_clip.mp3

is the new pop hit "ob baby" of No Doubt in their Rock Steady inspired from Oh Mama, Oh Mama of HJ's Minnale? anyone notice the influence?

You have only analysed about the songs...
Some of the movies have also been copied.
The latest hit "Thenali" by Kamal & K.S.Ravikumar has been copied from "What about Bob" acted by Bill Murray. The theme of Arunachalam by Rajini comes from "Trading Places" by Eddie Murphy.
Who knows what else...???

"HJ has lifted the Leo Coffee jingle by ARR and used in in mudher Kanave in Majnu.
It is not inspiration,it is theft."
thanks for this..I knew it the moment I heard the song for the first time but couldnt remember which ad it was..I thought that was HJ's own jingle perhaps, but if it is ARRs then it sure is theft.. :-) but I would prefer to call it as an intelligent inspiration because he has retained the meter but has changed the raga..I believe the original Leo ad tune is in Hamsadhwani(?) while Mudhar kanave is in shanmugapriya..maybe a case of subconscious influence..
the lines that iam referring to are "nila varum neram natchathritam thevai illai" and the subsequent line in the charanam..

I think Deva lacks originality and is hell bent on copying popular english songs and distorting them up, especially Mama by Phil Collins (genesis) which is one of my favorite songs. AR Rehma seems to be slightly better in that he does'nt copy any song ditto and only takes inspiration from the tunes. I hope these plagiarists get sued soon, especially Deva, SA Rajkumar and the likes.
The tabular compilation of our tamil music directors and copied songs is excellent. Good work guys!!

Shoba:
In response to your posting, tamil movies are better than hindi movies in which plagiarism is rampant because the audience is ignorant and mostly semi-literate (if not illiterate). Ask Anu Malik and he will tell you how to copy songs.

Another Tamil addition to start the new year! A fairly good inspiration at that! The song from the Vijay starrer 'Shahjahan', 'Minnalai pidithu' is inspired by Jerry Goldsmith's theme for the movie 'The ghost and the darkness'! Madhav Rudraraju who sent me this info also adds that Mani was the composer for the Telugu mishmash of this English movie, called 'Mrugaraju' starring Chiranjeevi. This could be the one of the ways Mani came across this theme! Its a very interesting inspiration though, worth listening!
Listen to both the tracks in my site!
