Thanks Aditya for the comments. Please remember that the samples are from the middle. Sorry if that was not made obvious. My apologies for that. I am really glad that all of you (till now) like the scores :) Thanks again for taking the time to review the samples... waiting for rest... :)

Ramesh,
I listened to all your song samples on Hi Fi mode, switching off my technical mind.
Nice effort first of all.
Let me be frank and say that you could have put more effort into the mix. I could see you guys planning the whole song and recording it. With the current technology and computer mixing capabilities, I expected to see more synth sounds, more kicky beats and a lot of post production work done into it. To be frank, I was disappointed there. Your song melodies are brilliant, but it is just that. I mean I didn't understand why you would loose those melodies to less effort based instrumental rendering. Next time be sure you put in some efforts into that part too. You guys are ofcourse, a promising group.
Final point, don't try to be like Rehman, try to surpass him, and I bet you can do it. :o)
And friend, please take it in right spirit. I am just trying to help you with some details.
Thanks,
Eswar

Thanks for the feedback Eswar. Definetly will take in the right spirit :) Please clarify what
you mean by "loose those melodies to less effort based instr. remdering". we needed the violin and mridangam/kanjeera for the classical parts. Other than these, the lead guitar and chords are the only other live inst used.
Thanks for your encouragements and constructive criticisms :)

Detour Ahead -> Tease in Abstraction:-))
Eswar, you can make another trail and make
everybody see the beautiful park in your way:-))
There's nothing like the only WAY and it's just
that it's not OUR Way:-)) If 100 people like
your TRAIL and 20 people like somebody else's TRAIL.
Please don't touch names of any great musicians,
they are safe in this thread alone.

ramesh .you guys have done a good job. I especially liked the stress on carnatic style of melody making. Carnatic music is our culture heritage, we need to make it more relevant to you younger generation, so that it is kept alive and nurtured. Your teams work will help in this direction.
I really liked most of the songs, much better than the filmy trash these days. A few observations - the chords/harmony layers seems to give a 'Enya'ish' feel to the songs. Maybe the synth piano is creating the impression in me (I am not that musically savvy..do dont take it seriously). I do think though the singers seem to be so focussed on the singing more than emoting according to the lyrics. (I know you will take these in the positive spirit).
(BTW, Ramesh, do you have a brother by name, Rajesh and are you from Pondicherry ?)

Eswar,
Alright, now I am the bad guy here :o). That is not what I meant Aditya, I expected a backlash, but not this soon :o)
Well, my point was not comparing them with any current music composers, rather I saw some inspiration from other musicians, I just wanted to encourage them to take a different way as much as possible. I don't say that I am void of such influence, in my mind I am heavily influenced too. I just wanted to encourage them that is all.
Your park and trail is well taken. My point is not that they have to follow MY trail, or OUR trail. My point was that they could have put in more effort into their final mix. It needn't be the stuff I told them to do. It is just that it seemed lacking in mixing effort, and I just pointed it out to them. Hmmm... Looks like I did hurt some people. Sorry, if I did.
Ramesh,
I meant your background sounds/effects/instrument tracks may not be matched with the effort you put in your vocals. Looks like it is time to improve my conversation skills again :o)
Anywayz, peace. You can very well disregard anything you find destructive in your mind.
Laters,
Eswar

Thanks for your comments and observations... I will pass it on.

Guys,
Firstly thanks a lot for taking time to review the music and post your criticisms. This goes to everyone who's written anything about Mugangal. I really appreciate the time and effort all of you have put into it.
Let me point out again that the samples are taken from the middle of the songs, and as such can seem pretty weird when taken out of context. The album is theme-based and I wanted to give as much importance to the lyrics as possible. So, the songs have turned out to be like stories. So, when taken out of context, some of the lines can seem pretty weird. Having said that, let me move on.
Aditya and UV, thanks a lot for the detailed analysis. I would love for you guys to listen to the songs in their entirety and let me know what you think.
UV, the reason why I have underplayed the bass lines a little in Inbam, is because I was trying to emulate old-school funk. The slapping/popping funk genre came a little later, and in fact some of the old-school bassists frown upon slapping and popping. The lyrics was written to mirror the 60s/70s time period and the way songs were written back then. I decided to go with old-school funk with some tfm influences to give it shape. Just to give you a background on how things came to be the way they are.... :-)
Easwar, personally, I dont think that we spent lesser effort during the mixes. In fact, I spent more time on the mixes than on the recordings. I guess what you were trying to say was that there could be a lot more synth tones and hard-hitting grooves, but this album didnt warrant that. It's about a certain kind of genre, along with my musical influences. I'm not too kicked about dance/electronica/techno. I love "live" and natural sounds. Like I said earlier, the music has been made to try and enhance the lyrics. I didnt want it to be an overkill. Having said that, I think it's also safe to say that music is by nature subjective. I would love to hear what you thought was a bad mix - which song, what you thought was missing and what the issue was, with the mixing. It will help me see what is wrong with it.
Like Aditya said, this is a story that we are trying to tell. The beauty of the story can be appreciated when you hear it fully. When taken out of context it can seem like garbage. Hopefully, the story and the story-telling has turned out ok. There will always be people who dont like a particular kind of story. They would rather hear a horror story than a fairy tale.
I would rather not address the "try not to be like Rahman" comment... ;-)
Again, thanks a lot to all of you for your time, encouragement and support.

Mahesh:
First of all let me congratulate on making good score for a Live Concert in which "Swamiji/Kishmu" performed...I don't rememember the name of that concert but it was performed in Bay Area. Very Good Imagination...It's very creative. Although the flute performances in that particular score was not in sync...Can you post the link?

Aditya

Mahesh,
Those are just my observations. If you find it not matching your genre, I think you can leave it off the head. My opinion was based on what I heard, and I felt it needed an little enhancement in general atmosphere that is all.
Peace

hahaha... This is getting to be fun.... Anyways, thanks Easwar. The reason I asked you for particulars was only so that I could keep them in mind while working on new songs or reworking old ones. If at any point in time, you feel that you can put your finger on what you think is missing, feel free to email me. It would really be helpful.
Thanks.
