Hi guys,
I recently discovered this page and have been contributing extensively ever since. How about a permanent thread for discussing famous analogies: metaphors, similies, expressions, ironies, etc. in Tamil songs? For example: this would be a thread where I will share my favorite analogy for a smile, "Kaiyalavu Pazhutha Maathulai, Paalil
Neyalavu Padarntha Punnagai" from "Vizhiyilae Malarnthathu" written by Panchu Arunachalam.
As great as the discussion topics are in this site, I feel lyrics and song writers should get more attention.

I know you know exactly what I meant, but let me clarify any way. When someone you were thinking of or pursuing shows up unexpectedly it results in a pleasant surprise. That's the emotion the above mentioned expressions identify. And in such a commonplace expression, Kannadhasan managed to stamp his originality.

In the movie panchavarNakkiLi, vAli takes the Bharadhidhasan kavidhai thamizhukkum amudhendRu pEr sung by PS, and creates a varuNanai song avaLukkum thamizh endRu pEr sung by TMS. With that one line, vAli transfers all the traits Bharadhidhasan attributes to thamizh to the woman being described (justifiably or not is a different issue). Quite creative!
More to Topic:
One of my favorite descriptions by kaNNadhAsan is that of a paddy field. He compares the plant whose stalk is bending downward due to the weight of the grains to a shy young girl. Quaint may be by today's standards, but quite an appealing analogy!

NSK wanted to take amovie called "Paditha Muttalkal".NSK and Kannadasan went to Bangalore to make preparation for the movie. While there, NSK mentioned to Kannadasan "Thennaiya Petha Ilanneru, Pillaiyai Petha Kannneru". The film never materialised, but Kannadasan kept the statement of NSK and much later used it in ENga OOr Raja, when the righ situation arose in the film. Just for info only.
