Hello, I just saw Jeans in Los Angeles, and I
believe it was dubbed from Tamil to Hindi (I only
speak English). There was a beautiful love song,
which I think is the love theme (very slow), and
sung partially in English. I've been unable to find the name of this song, and I don't believe it
is included as one of the 6 songs (by
AR Rahman) on the cd album.
If anyone knows which song I'm talking about,
I'm trying to find out the name, who the composer
is, who sings it, and on what album I can find it.
Thank you very much in advance.
Sincerely,
Brett
p.s. Are there 2 different soundtrack albums (in
Tamil & Hindi)? I'm sorry if these are ignorant
questions, I am American and am not very familiar
with Indian cinema. Even though I didn't understand the dialogue, I very much enjoyed Jeans.

Mr. Sathiya Keerthi, I agree I started a suspicion based on what I saw. But I also welcomed Brett if he is for real. I don't want to indulge a phony in the discussions do you? I certainly didn't intend any bashing or give way to the verbal hysteria of rahman_basher. In fact, I was bemoaning the very fate of such bashing. I wish the DF-Admin would direct me to threads where people with decaffeinated tempers and real names reside. I guess I will head to the archives and probe the past.

Hi SKji,
Good to see you mentioning the name Midnight Oil. That's a band to listen
to. I love the songs River runs red, My country right or wrong, Truganini
and the list will continue fairly long.
No worries, mate.
Anyone know of any other such bands in the world? Whatever happened to
chumbawamba?

Hi Mr.Brett,
Welcome to TFM-DF. Never mind the
dispute between the IR fans and ARR fans.
IR is a reverent composer, who has composed
around 8000 songs. ARR is comparitively new.
Vande Matharam is a good album.
U may be interested in the other non-film
albums:
How to Name it - by IR. Fine blend of south
indian classical and
western classical music.
and
Nothing but wind
Concerto for Sitar - by Ravi Shankar along with
London Philharmonic
Orchestra.
Colonial Cousins - By Hari Haran and another
person
A Legacy -By Ali Akbar Khan and Asha Bhonsle
Good North indian classical
based album.

Thanks again everyone for all the great music recommendations. I actually have one for all of you. An American who lived in India for several years and studied different types of Indian music with maestros. He goes by the name "Jai Uttal" and has an album called "Shiva Station" which is released by Triloka/Mercury/Polygram records. I would interested in hearing what all of you think about an American playing music based on Indian classical music.
Also, thanks mannAru for letting me know these albums are available in Stanford. I maybe visiting Palo Alto for a weekend soon (actually San Carlos) and will look for them.
I hear Ravi Shankar is playing a concert here in L.A. which I will try to attend.
Take Care everyone,
Brett

"This thread is turning out to be another one of those IR vs ARR fights."
Well, one has to ask-why is IR even coming up in a thread about Jeans? It never ceases to amaze me how Raja-fans leap with absolute impunity into Rahman-specific threads.Does the reverse happen,I wonder.
Udhaya
Your suspicion is appropriately cynical, its good to be wary. But seeing Brett's use of the word believe etc I'd say he is the genuine article.
"My only regret is that Sony did not do a good enough job promoting this record around the world. I know in America, I saw no advertisements, did not hear it on any radio shows, nor was the video played on t.v."
This is something I'd like to talk more about except for concerns that it'll give ammunition to Rahman-bashers that I'd rather they not have. However since no better opportunity is likely present itself, let me go ahead nevertheless.
Its true Sony has done a very inadequate job promoting Vande Mataram but they've done a similar slapdash job with another stunning world music release Majoun(Horowitz/Deyhim) too,so I guess Sony perceives no great market for world music in the US at least.Or they are too busy with global sucesses like Dion and Mariah Carey and many many other such all-American pop-acts to tailor proper marketing campaigns to nurture world-music artists.Contrast this with Peter Gabriel's Real World label's approach to marketing non-American artists doing ethnic/fusion stuff like the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan or Maryam Mursal. The latter recently received a good deal of attention in the print media for her release titled Journey though it still stopped short of tv/radio ads.World music(or ambient, jazz for that matter) is not big enough in the US to merit tv/radio ads right now.Since Real World concentrates exclusively on world talent they are better at promoting the same than Sony,so perhaps Sony signing Rahman wasnt the best thing to happen to him.
In fact Sony may actively muffle his chances in the international arena by tying him up in a contract and then marketing him indifferently. For example they dont seem to have bothered to send complimentary copies of the album to magazine critics.Magazines like The Beat and Dirty Linen which typically review such stuff seem to have overlooked the album.More the pity.
Any thoughts from pro-Rahman guys?

Sreeni thanks for taking the discussion where it should have been headed anyway. Mannaru, I too live in San Jose, it took this long to figure it out. This is why it is important to have a Profiles section in this DF so people can congregate.
Brett, I have one of Jai Uttal's CDs and missed him when he came to Berkeley for a concert. I like his music quite a bit. You should also check out "Passages" a collaborative effort by Philip Glass and Ravi Shankar, it also includes other Indian singers like SPB. Also the score or the soundtrack for the movie, "Dead Man Walking" which teams Eddie Vedder, lead singer of PEARL JAM with one of India's and World Music's greatest stars--Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. A duet where Nusrat sings in Hindi and Eddie sings the same verse in English is an amazing tribute to world music.
Coming back to JEANS. The nisa ri sa nisa ri sa was really fetching. But there was a slower sadder version of the song "Anbae Anbae" played only in the movie when the younger twin finds out that he has been cheated. Is this the same tune that Brett was alluding to at the start of the thread. In any case, I'm glad this discussion, with all its sub-plots has brought a number of veteran DFers out of the woods. Welcome back. And thanks Brett for this thread.

Talking of world music, there were albums called West Meets East by Ravi Shankar and Yehudi Menuhin. I have volume 1 and volume 3 but I have never been able to find a volume 2. Volume 1 is OK but volume 3 is terrific.
Does anybody know of a West Meets East volume 2 ?

Hello,
Udhaya, the tune I was trying to find out is not the one played when the twin finds out he's been cheated, but rather it is the very slow tune, sung partially in English, then hummed in a female voice. It was played many times throughout the
movie, starting with the night skyline scene of Las Vegas, then the airport scene where the customs officer is searching through Ms. Rai's bag and finds many of Mr. Prashanth's things, and then during the ending credits. Also, Udhaya, I thought Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was from Pakistan not India? By the way, I have the "Dead Man Walking" soundtrack and I really like Nusrat's tracks with Pearl Jam.
Sreeni, I concur with you that Peter Gabriel's Real World would have done a much better job in promoting AR Rahman as an artist, than Sony. They are distributed in the U.S. by Caroline records and around the world, buy Virgin. I actually met the Real World people at the WOMAD festival a few years back, and they were actively promoting their artists. 2 interesting artists I saw were Sheila Chandra and Lakshminarayana Shankar, who was very nice and actually gave me his home phone number in Hollywood.
Thanks again everyone for all the wonderful music tips.

Sreeni:
What info do you have on Maryam Mursal . How good is her(?) music
Brett:
Can you post L Shankar's tel no? I like his music. Did you see any of his performances - if you are interested in Carnatic Music, you should listen to Pancha Nadai Pallavi . He plays with Peter Gabriel.

I know you well. My apologies if what I had said
looked harsh.
Brett:
My friend, who saw the VCD of Jeans last
night, sent me the following details by e-mail:
The titles mention nothing about the love theme
you are talking about. The first line of the song
is not clear, so he couldn't decipher it. The
remaining lines...
you're in my heart
sweet memories keep holding me
and deep, in myself, I know you're there
and my heart belongs to you
ni sa ree saa
ni sa ree saa
ma ga ri paa
etc

Sathiya Keerthi, you don't need to apologize for anything. I was just venting about how good discussions without someone lashing out like a put bull are rare. I meant rahman_basher. I was also envious of the archives where there are some amazing discussions with level headed people about great topics, is there any way to revive them to a current topic besides posting for dead eyes? But the course of this thread has been great since that posting so on with it.
