That was the musical explanation and here comes the technical explanation:
Though what I have described is calling limiting compression, by specifying good ratios, you can
maximize the dynamic range to make sure all through the signal the peak to peak volume is peak to peak!
This is exactly what Jingle producers do. That is why, you would have noticed that after a soap or a radio show the following commercial seems extremely loud!
For the real techies and mathies:
Note that compression is different from normalization (which is finding the peak of a signal and boosting or cutting it to a specified
level).
While normalization applies same multiplication
factor to all the signal values, compression applies a multiplication factor, proportional to the signal value - so
this multiplication factor varies across the range of amplitudes.

Good one RJay. THAT was really informative!

Thanks for the Explanation. It's very imformative.

A free software that you can use for normalization is Audiograbber. It first finds out the peak, calculates the ratio to the max (98% is -0.5db I think) and multiplies all the sample values by that ratio.
Anyways, rjay your explanation was technically on the dot. Compression and limiting are called Dynamics processing. If you have bought a CD Writer it usually comes with software to do things like this. I normalize all songs when I make a compilation CD.
Re: commercials/jingles. Compression is actually abused there, because these marketing wizzes along with colluding psychologists think that if volume drops they might lose the attention of their listeners. This is not jingles alone, even songs go through the compression thingy.
There is also a school of thought that compression messes up the signal. So the purist/audiophile recordings try not to use a compresser, at the max they use a limiter (which gracefully limits the max volume) to make sure the signal does not clip badly.

RJAY / Naveen and comment - why dont we start educating folks about Music (compostition / forms / styles ), Recording, Playing ... with examples in a separate thread? I heard enough crap from people. Seems like they desperately need some knowledge...
I know u guys have already proceeded in this direction many times, but somehow they have dissappeared. Please revive / start a new thread. Dumb questions will be invited but absoultely no comparisons.

Swamiji, rjay just explained compression. How about explaining 'delays' for your part ?

swamiji,
That is a nice idea. However I have some friendly advice for you!
Personally I would request you
to grow out
of your 'impatience at foolishness'. It accomplishes nothing. Treat 'fools' like geniuses and quickly they become geniuses. Highlight positives and keep going. Because if you start pointing out half-knowledge, it turns people further away from wanting to know!
You cannot use harsh words to get people to become learners, right?
And especially being a "Swamiji" you should control your anger! ;)
Coming to your request, It is actually easy to teach, but real learners
are rare! It is tough to get into the mindset of
learning!

RJay,
I accept your advice which is just about a right attitude a teacher should have. It opens up a learner, and makes the learning process a smooth flow from the teacher to the student.
Unfortunately DF is a place where you cannot achieve that. There is a track record that people trying to do that are nailed down, and dragged into "comparisons". So, the original intention of explaining is lost. Moreover, people say "this is A and not B" without giving reasonable explanations to why what they say is true. It is a claim without any proof...So when I tried explaining why it is not, they still stick to their claims...and question my knowledge. Now, why should I continue treating people like geniuses? Why should I accomplish "that" something when I am spending time to write?
Well...seems like I achieved nothing by writing this hehe
Jai Ram!

for people like me, who dont have "the gadgets" nor could afford, it's really difficult to "understand". (yeah, learning the math is no biggie, but know how the math affects the sound is impossible unless i hear the sound! :-) )

I think it depends on the kind of attitude taken up by the "teacher". I dont remember rjay's threads on composing running into any problems. the thread just dies its natural death because beyond a certain point there were not many contributors and I guess rjay just got exhausted contributing in many threads at the same time.
But if people like Swamiji are going to take up a contemptuous attitude towards other posters with posts smacking of arrogance then the threads would sure run into trouble, why not?
IMO, the kind of thing I see Swamiji doing to other posters over the last few days here in TFMDF is much worse than any IR-ARR fight posts. And I have been in this TFMDF for over 3 years.

Hehe...Vijay. I realize that myself...I dont deny.
Anyways, I am tired of explaining myself..but theres things which I absolutely hate that I see happening here...and arrogance is (one of my) best answers to it. It reflects my attitude for people that know little, but speak a way too much. To those people that seriously like to know (u would be surprised to know that I have many good friends here) - I will simply listen to them, and enjoy a good discussion - like sharing a good cup of tea. For those that speak total crap, or compare - my attitude is to throw the tea on their faces. Simple, but very very effective.
BTW kiru, I have lots of web-sites bookmarked. Heres one on compression / delays that will explain a lot better that I do. Here you go

I am joining this Swamiji-Anti Swamiji debate (as if we didnt have much else to debate abt!!) I think he is a true "teacher", a humble teacher, who talks only what he knows. Please keep up the good work.. In a tfm, which is bipolar in every respect (!),.. i think it is difficult to remain impassive and non-aligned for too long :-)) Jai Ram! Jing chak!

"For those that speak total crap, or compare - my attitude is to throw the tea on their faces. "
A more mature way would be to ignore their "crap" than picking fights with them. or if u feel that guys here are complete morons u can even choose to stay away from TFMDF :-)

Swamiji sir,.. let us get on with it. Yenna sir, there really is no point in talking abt people who talk a lot, without understanding exactly what they mean.. because they are there all over the place !!
Lets keep it in perspective.. I believe that this forum is intended to discuss some facts... like albums getting released,.. and discussing technicalities (this thread - particularly so) - which help passive readers like me to learn and get intrigued and appreciate better, clarify vague ideas with those who know their stuff. (and of course, occassional jing chaks, djhkls :-)
Please restrain urself for the sake of the common good. Cant help feeling newtfmpage has lost a bit of sanity and decency in the years. Nevertheless, the good will always come.. it is left to us to *ignore* the useless crap, and get the benefit that it is intended to give.
good day, and oh ! ... Jai Ram :-)
