SPB must have been attempting improvisations from day one but the sheer volume of mid seventies TFM and TELFM gave ample scope to him to try out every expression,every modulation under the sun and he came out a winner each time.The TFM MDs' confidence in his improvisations should have been a well-established one by mid/late 70s.(By contrast Chakravarthi must have completely lost his self-confidence .))) )
A song,composed for the lyrics and he shows of his "vocal"muscles!I always think about this one and Nizhal kandavan from NinaithalE ininkkum together.Great choice bb.
AvargaL is one of the rare movies wherein both SPB and SJ have 2 solos each,they were the only singers in the film and there were no duets.So an interesting duel on solos.......SJ wins???Ofcourse,SJ's Katrukkenna will always remain the lead song of this movie.
avargaL must have inspired the likes of Anuradha Ramanan to write her 1001 reserched stories .))Sujatha, like all past,present,future KB heroines does the gum-showing-mad-laugh.RK with his right-side vagidu and ill-sized spectacles wins the small acting race with Kamal.Kamal's confidence to play that miniscule role,despite his then status is remarkable.Ravikumar would remind you of ........what is the name of that junk food?....Ha!....Burger.As I had mentioned some time back ,the only time you see Ravikumar "performing" is in Pagalil oru Iravu during the immortal "iLamai yenum poonggatru"

Song of the Day: anbil malarndha nal roja from kaNavanE kaN kaNda dheivam.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/anbilmal.rm
- This is a rare, wonderful lullaby, sung by P.Suseela. Music by Adhi Narayana Rao. This was one of the earliest songs for PS.
- The more famous song in the film is 'unnaik kaN thEduthE', a stylish song with a lot of hiccups, sung by PS for a drunk Lalitha. 'enthan uLLam thuLLi viLaiyaaduvathum yEnO' is also from this film. The movie starred Gemini Ganesan and Anjali Devi.

Saravanan: Bhanumati Ramakrishna claimed in an interview that she was to act in the movie and this song was sung by her. But the heroine was changed and PS sang. But since PS could not manage the hiccups, they retained the original hiccup!! However, PS said clearly in another interview that she had in fact provided the hiccups as well!! Can you throw some light on this??

Psst, bb! Oru suggestion, for an upcoming SOTD: since singer Bramhanandham recently passed away, maybe you could feature a song sung by him (I know he sang two songs in Metti)?? I remember Mythila and myself once requesting the song 'Sandhakavigal Paadidum.' Now would be a good time....
regards,

Following KKKD, PS was inundated with offers that catapulted her into stardom. Is there a female voice that could even come close to PS' ? A lilting melody beautifully rendered by the one and only. Even the 'thA thAlAlO' phrase sparkles with a newly found meaning when PS' subtle expression laden voice flows through it, gently cajoling it into contributing its mite to the song. A worthy choice for SOTD indeed !!! As an aside, your's truly suggested to PS (herself!!) to include this song for concert that was arranged for the blind school in Chennai but I dont know if she actually did :)

This is one of my all time favourites.
bb, keep the classics coming!
Has "kaalamidhu kaalamidhu" by PS, another great lullaby, already been made SOTD?

Song of the Day: oru maanai thEdudhu maanvizhi from vEliyillaa maamaram.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/orumanai.rm
- Saravanan writes:
Sung by M. Ashok & S. Janaki. Lyrics & Music by Gangai Amaran.

Some time back, ‘unadhE iLam maalaippozhudhu’ from thEneer had been put up as SOTD. Like thEneer, vEliyillaa maamaram seems to be another project that was abandoned midway. I have no clue as to the cast and crew, but memories linger of listening to this song on Radio Ceylon’s mandha maarutham in
1983/84.
The album consisted of 5 songs: ‘vEliyilla maamarathil vandhadhamma indha kani’, which has a soulful VJ accompanied by GA himself; ‘yElElO yElElankiLiyE ennidam Odi vaa’ - a rustic rhapsody by SJ; ‘chikkichikka chikkaachikka’, where a breezy VJ impresses despite the inane lyrics; ‘aarambamE vegu sugamaa’ – a joyous JC/SJ duet; and ‘oru maanai thEdudhu maanvizhi’.
* * * *
The very mention of Ashok would bring to remembrance the title track of oru vidukathai oru thodarkathai, wherein he made a dazzling debut, managing to hold court despite making a late entry in the 3rd Act after SPB and SJ have had their say. In the following years, he showed promise in the few songs that came his way, like the exuberant ‘poochoodi pottum vechchu’ (from another unreleased film- ponni, music again by GA) and the haunting ‘kaatRE yaazh meettu, ivar kaNNeer kavithai kEttu’ (from manjaL nila, music by IR).
Unfortunately for him, his songs failed to elicit notice. And Ashok found himself fading into oblivion; just another entry in the remorseless list that includes names like M.C.Balu, Ramesh, Raj Seetharaman, Brahmanandam… singers who engaged our attention for a brief while, and then slipped unobtrusively far into the dusty rear shelves of tfm archives…
* * * *
How I wish kOzhi koovudhu didn’t fare as well as it did! For then the wretched Gangai Amaran might have not have been led into distracting pretensions, and would have attended assiduously to his true calling; tfm would have been undoubtedly richer today had that happened. And GA could have passionately nurtured and honed his innate music skills, and would have probably emerged as a prolific composer, gifted as he was with some refreshingly inventive perceptions.
Dismiss the innocuous chorus voices, observe the uncluttered progression of the prelude; hark at the obscure Ashok usher in the enchantment, with the singular SJ adding to the allure, and the dream-laden, cuddlesome charaNam that gently engulfs you in its flow; let this wondrous Valaji soak in…. a simple and scintillating sample from GA’s enviable repertoire.

Saravanan, a great write up and a great song. I cannot agree more with you than what you have said about Gangaiamaran. I think he wanted an easy way of life with all that popularity. But TFM has become a loser by giving away Gangai amaran to inane stage shows, gimmickry and movie direction(pathetic!!!). May be his elder brother's reticence made him go for the cine limelight with vengence

Saravanan,
Thanks for the song!
I'm not sure if the raga is Valaji though... I feel it has shades of Sri Ranjani/ BhAgesrhi. Will listen to it more carefully and let you know.
