Hariharan&co, singing should not be like roaring.SPB roared always at high pitches.Check up with tamil songs man.See how he destroyed the song 'en veettu thottathil' with that lady.That lady's performance was far above this SPB(Shameful to compare such a recognised talented singer,Jayachandran,at age of 60! to compare with some improper singer who has not touched music)

Do you think by just writing the biographical
(but not really authentic) sketch of PJC
he becomes the greatest singer ?
I like PJ's songs. I still keep listening to some of his gems. But I have some important points to make on his voice, range & timbre.
1. his voice is no doubt very melodious, however
lacks bass, where he loses out to KJY & SPB.
2. Range wise he is not all that good in lower octaves and in high pitch he is not as good as Rafi or SPB.
3. If you listened to SPB's concert which was telecast in SS music channel on new year's day,
probabaly you would have apologized for making such incorrect comments on SPB's singing in higher octaves. It was such a wonderful performance especially in high octave numbers like "mun paniya". he sang them with ease.
He has deliberately sung in roaring fashion in some songs. At the same time you listen to "anjali anjali", Sankara nada sareera',unakenna Melae nindrai' sangeetha jathi mullai, paadi parantha KiLi,kaNmaNiyae kadhal enbathu, Thalattu PiLLai ondrai..,and many more
he has shown his inimitable modulations and control at higher octaves.
Another missing/misleading info about the rise of PJC
It was MSV who gave him chance in the malayalam movie ' PaNi Theeratha Veedu' in the song Suprabhatahm" set in raaga Mohanam which was sung exceeedingly well by PJC so much so that KJY got scared. It was again MSV who gave him break in movies like Naan avanillai'alaigal, mooNdru Mudichu etc., followed By IR who gave him some best numbers in "kaatrinilae varum geetham, Kizhakke pogum rail" etc.,
One more point. I was very hurt when PJC talked about other singers he liked he omitted the names of only KJY and SPB. you may have a professional rivalry but it was too obvious that he did not seem to like either of them. Atleast SPB has not been a rival to him in Malayalam movies. Then why this attitude ?
In the final analysis while PJC is definitely considered a top class singer, he can not be compared with the likes of Rafi or SPB.

excellent points man, but in the future do not respond to any IP addresses beginning with (@ 203.199.213.), cos, it's all posted bu one insane PJC fanatic fool, who knows nothing about music, or his idle PJC, what a disgrace to a top singer like PJC

It is very silly to bring the name PJC, (although he was an excellent singer) amongst the gems, like SPB, Rafi, KJY, Kishore, ..etc.
Sunderasan;
I agree about PJC loosing out to SPB/KJY, when it comes to bass , but i feel SPB has the best bass in playback singers, closely followed by kishore / bala murali krishna, then KJY.
what do you think ?

Try this song,
Theendai Mei Theendai Thandai Padi Thandai Oru Viral Vandhu Unnai Theendiyadho Un Narabodu Veenai Meettiyadho.....
To appreciate how range of ups and downs in tone is very neatly done by SPB...

So, Is Mr.SP Balu going to sing atleast one charanam in telugu in the forthcoming AR Rehman conerts?? Last time, Mr.Balu didn't sing any telugu song in earlier concerts. In the last AR Rehman US concert, he sang only one song (in the unplugged section -- anjali anjali). Hope, he sings atleast one song this time. When Mr.Balu is singing both hindi and tamil versions of the song in alternate charanams of a song, why can't he use telugu similarly??? andhrudu ayyi vundi, andhramuni anyaayam cheyatam kaada ? andhra prekshakulu meeru yemi chesina choostu/vintu vuntaaru anukokandi.

In ARRs concert shows in US there was a unplugged kind of section where ARR was on piano and SPB, Hariharan, Sujata and Kavita Krishanmurthy were singing. It was just damn too good and was probably the best part of the concert. There SPB sang few songs mainly Anjali anjali from movie Duet. There while singing he switched between telugu and tamil versions and it was very good. There were four concerts an in one he had switched between telugu and tamil and in another it was between tamil and hindi.
ARR is now again doing few concerts in next 2 months and SPB is accompanying him. I really hope they give such performance again. Another good thing to see in the concert is the humbility of few great people like SPB, Chitra, Sujatha, ARR etc. They are far more down to earth than other performers.

Yes, I too have noticed SPB switching to tamil, telugu, hindi, while giving stage performance, it's really a treat to the ears, the songs that he normaly sitches to different languages are "Kadhal rojave", "Anjali anjali", "Ottakathai kattiko", ...etc.
I know SPB, sujatha are very humble, I have noticed sujatha touches SPB's feet before singing, and SPB hates that big time, what humble ppl, chitra is always shy & never say word, but she is always smiling, hich is pleasent for the eyes!
don't you agree?

Dear Raghu;
why two posts?:-)
any way
SPB I feel is the best amongs these four legends, One must think that Rafi had classical training as well ghazalls, KJY is an awsome Carntic singer, bu SPB had nor formal training like KK, but KK's voice is not that good. SPB has excellent bass, compared to other singers, of course he sings in tender voice as well, that's call voice modulation.
hence SPB is the greatest amongst all singer in India, I mean in Play back singing!, there is not an actor in south that SPB ji has not sung for!

it is very difficult compare to legends, SPB/Rafi
we all have different voices, some has a deep voice, like SPB, some has a soft voice like Rafi.
Rafi was indeed unmatched at high octaves, due to the fact he had high pitched voice, another example of this nature is TMS!
on the other hand SPB has very low pitch, his lower pitched songs are unmatched, and unparallel, now this is due to the nature of SPB's voice, deep voice, hence if SPB sings in high pitch it may sound odd to some, as SPB will be going out of his voice range to sing in High octaves, same thing applies to Rafi singing in low octaves, in some cases, u might experience just air comig out of his throat, rather than sound.
