dinesh :
what's your sites URL?
Actually , did you include
the
"Mercury mele medai idu" song from Majnu into HJ copy list.
This song is heavyly inspired from
"Ham raahi jab ho masthana" from pukaar.
Give me the URL one again.

Iam a good fan of Harris, also of A.r, but right now vaseegra and sneghidene might have competition.
But the song where people should listen carefully to is Oh kadhala by S.P Bala from the movie KADHAL VIRUS
This trully is a song of love
a true feeling of a broken heart was clearly writen on a letter, the cinematogrpahy was done very nicly for the fact, taht song shouldnt' have people singing, or dancing its a smooth song which i think jsut took mah breath away
but for me in music wise vaseegera is the best, lyrics wise ohh kadhala and sneghidene is no were near that song if , u watched kadhal virus

Vaseegara's tune and melody crosses the language border easily and more smoothly than Snegithaney. I've also seen many westerners appreciate Vaseegara much better than any other song. It kind of stands out.
Snegithaney, I agree is also a very good song, but it's got a heavy Carnatic tinge in it that a lot of people (people not used to the carnatic raagas or the high-pitched female voice) can't appreciate.
My vote, therefore, goes to Vaseegara. It's my humble opinion, that there are few songs that come even close to the caliber of this song.

>>>Vaseegara's tune and melody crosses the language border easily and more smoothly than Snegithaney.
Quite funny..Vaseegara's hindi version is a big flop and Snegidhane's Hindi version is a hit and people call it great as it has revived the sinking audio market in north...Well who the "many westerners " that you are referring to Mr. BT?

My vote definitely goes to "Snehidhane". "Vaseegara" came after it...hence the heavy inspiration. Point to be noted, both the songs are based on the same raga Kirwani & Abheri. Snehidhane proves Rahman's genius of composing totally unconventionally. Listen to the interludes by Sultan Khan on sarangi. They r mindblowing! Also, Sadhna Sargam's sensuous vocals mesmerise! Masterpiece creation from a Maestro.

In a Mani Ratnam interview, he mentioned that when he was selecting tunes for Alaipayudhe, he was presented with both Snehidhane and Vaseegara. He had chosen Snehidhane and the rest is History. He mentioned that Vaseegara was a tune that Harris Jeyaraj composed when he worked with AR Rahman (At that time, the was the active keyboardist).
When Harris parted with AR Rahma, he had asked for ARR for the tune and ARR had said that as it was his own work, that he could have it and use it, hence it's appearance in Minnale....
Also, both Snehidhane and Vaseegara are in NATABAIRAVHI Ragam (with touches of Keeravani here and there). Only, Snehidhane has many other notes touching it. It seems that Harris has been very much inspired by AR Rahman, for most of his compositions....not to mention his hair :)

BT I agree with you completely. Westerners, (meaning Tamils living in the West) appreciate Vaseegara a lot. Much more than Snegithane. I myself prefer Vaseegara but snegithane is still good.

When I meant language border, I was talking about the typical characteristics attached with a particular language. I don't know what it's called, but I think based on a tune or music, you can tell if the song is a Tamil song, or a Hindi song or a completely Western song. When it comes to Vaseegara, anyone from any language can appreciate the seamless merge of the lyrics (I'm not going into the quality here) with the tune and the perfect combination of that Pan-Flute going along with the song.
Saying a song is bad because it failed in Hindi is not, according to me, a valid argument.
Again, I am not saying Snegithaney is not a good song. Snegithaney is one of the better songs, but it is *my* opinion that Vaseegara is better than Snegithaney - for all the aforementioned reasons.

Angeli You got it wrongly...
actually...when HJ...came to HI to ARR...after getting the Majnu offer...
ARR was composing the Vaseegara song...and HJ sat and while talking to ARR he memorised teh song...i mean the tune...
and after a while ARR decided not to continue with the Tune....
but after few months.>ARR was shocked...to hear the same Tune he trashed re-used by HJ....
and suprisingly..it became hit...
and ARR got fed-up with Tamilians..and that is why...he decided to just rec-cycle for Tamil films for some time.....just to teach HJ a lesson....so he got nothing to compose...unfortunately...
HJ copies ARR's composition dated 10 years back too!!!!!...
he he he (the above story, or the caharacters have nothing to do with a real-life persona, and similarity is only conincedence)....

Nice 1! ;-)
Dinesh: No Vaseegara was a Harris Jeyaraj tune, which according to the article was why AR Rahman said he could take it with him and use it 4 Minnale. Mani had to choose, so he chose the AR Rahman tune, Snehidhane! As we all know, most of the stuff and loops Harris uses are from AR Rahman's library anyway! And, he seems to be too heavily inspired by the songs of ARR too.....I would say that Harris was inspired when working with ARR, and came up with the Vaseegara melody and when Mani chose Snehidhane, Harris asked for his melody back and used it in Minnale, and it turned out to be one of the biggest hits of all time, in terms of Tamil Film songs and world appreciation! I personally prefer Snehidhane!
Has anyone read this article? It is 3rd hand information for me, as I can't read Tamil well :(

Vaseegara is an easy song to sing. For stage programs and cultural TV shows, singers have used Vaseegara often to sing because its simple to sing. As for Snehidhiye, its more complex and its hard to sing the Shrinivas part for stages without the proper electronics equipment.

How do we define which is a better song?
in terms of arrangments..both looks good...in terms of singers contribution...both have the best out of them...
so..it left only with our preference....i guess...

In terms or lyrical content?
Where is Snegidhane which talks about a decent relation and a natural urge of two lowers married but could not say so to the society..
And where is Vaseegara with all pervert lyrics like "oru porvaikkul iru thookkam" and stuff like that..
I think in terms of sheer lyrical content and decency in expressing love..Snegidhane song stands out way way ahead.

If we talk about the contents of song there are much better songs from M.K.Thyagaraja Baghavathar and P.U.Chinnapa films which are miles ahead of Snehidhane and Vaseegara songs. May be if we compare which is the best poem whether Vaseegara or Snehidhane then Snehidhane could be ahead of other. Anyway both the songs are written for two different situations to express different emotions so does fit best with the situations. Then again that's not the scale to compare the songs. Best songs should be selected based on it's melody, simplicity, flow and rhythm. If we compare this way Vaseegara is far ahead of Snehidhane.

I disagree with the term 'pervert' here. Come on even kids these days are matured about these stuff. You are not from censor board Are you?
