I'm a new visitor to this website. I couldn't see anyone discussing about Vani Jayaram's songs.
Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

Saravanan -
Janmaashtami...and a Jairam revival!
Thanks for the lucid commentary and the lovely devotionals from Suprabatham. What a divine way to wake up....! I wish I could say more, but I have not seen the film. I remember these songs now...like I had never forgotten them, all thanks to you!
On another musical track:
The other day I was browsing a few random duets at the VJ website and chanced on this:
Mellap Pesu Megagangal Kaettaalum Naanum
Here's a plausible scenario: After penning this lyrical opening (an oringial image of clouds blushing as they eavesdrop on sweet-nothings)...the lyricist ran out and bought a pile of "Sindhubadh" comics!
The rest of the song is...hmmmm...how to say this without being pejorative? HOOT! :-)
And another:
Thondharavu Seiyaadhey Podi
Thoongudhoru Kaadhal Ilanjodi
A passable duet by VJ-MVD from Thalaiyanai Mandhiram (imagine if they had stuck with the original title: Purushanai Kaikkul Vaiththukolvadhu Eppadi...so prosaic? )...This composition by IR is remarkable for its use of the chorus. In fact, the choric part has more lines, it opens and closes the song, it dominates every aspect of the song...and the lead singers are rendered - extras! Check it out for IR's (IR)reversible genius! :-)

I always had a pet theory that songs i have heard in a theatre alongwith visuals are stored in a different place of my brain and songs that I had only heard over the radio/ audio cassette are stored elsewhere.
But like many theories this has been blown to smithereens by Saravanan. I distinctly remember seeing Suprabatham - but how come I never remember the sripriya number. Knowing Saravanan it had to be Sripriya but then how come i don't remember it.The only thing I remember in the movie is the lovely number" Kannanai Ninaithaal" and I do believe having mentioned it elsewhere in the thread.
How I wish I could erase unpleasant memories of lovely songs - every time I hear " pani vizhum malar vanam" I shudder as the juvenille PT exercises of Karthik & GG appear in my manakkan or SSR walking the cycle in EErikarain meethu...it was as if he barged into Mudhalalli from the Night of the walking dead! The list of classics ruined by the team effort of the actors and the choreographer is too long to be mentioned here.....
But after all this how come I don't remember a SRIPRIYA song ;-))))

Sathya Kabali/ Naaz/ Vengayam, thanks for your responses!
Naaz, I liked your imagination of what happened to the lyricist of 'mella pEsu' :)
And, btw I haven't seen suprabatham too :))
vengayam, as I said I only have a vague memory of Sripriya appearing for the song. I may be mistaken.

Saravanan,
Thanks for the latest instalment. Incidentally, I watched Mangalavaadyam and Suprabhatam in the same theater in Gopi. I don't remember Sripriya in Suprabhatam either but remember Vijayakumari. Vaguley remeber some guy in jail, Nambiyar's visvaroopam and the villain trying to violate Lata and Vijayakumari (it IS a 70s movie). Thanks for the songs too. Just listened to them all.

Same feeling here, Saravanan. One has to be optimistic, I suppose, that Vani will be back singing a few songs atleast sometime in the future.

This rather long URL contains pointers to a whole series of devotional albums (Kumkuma Nayaki, Ganesh bhajans, Krishna bhajans, etc etc....) with _music_ (and singing) by Vani Jairam.

Neel D, AV -
Thanks for the links.
The Hindu piece - what does one call these five para meanderings passing off as - yeah, what does one call that, too? :-) And, seriously, what's with sub-headings like "Penning Lyrics" ???
A bit more on the passing off thing: Malathi Rangarajan channel-flips, lands on Take it Easy, snatches a few moments of hurried nostalgia, and dabs her eyes with a lament that such a "sad" but great artiste deserves better than a fleeting slot on...now it' s right about here that the title of the show stares back with new found irony. But that's just starters.
The bigger - immaam periya - I is this:journalist watches tv interview and reports in newspaper. TVJournalism. It is all about the tv interview the journalist watched but did not conduct herself. DabbaTV or Lament's Easy? Your pick! :-)
Wouldn't it be fun if she could call up Sasirekha or P Suseela or P Jayachandran or...anybody else she finds lilipudianised in a humiliating 22 minutes) and gave them a "Nostalgia" page with questions and insights she'd thought up or had?
I think it'll be great fun, too! :-)

In the Kunkuma Nayaki album, Amma Unaiye Nambinaen is a standout track.
Thanks for the new songs at the website. I'll give them a listen soon.

Naaz,
I think Malathi Rangarajan should have made a call to VJ and followed up on her thoughts and done an interview. Still The Hindu considered it to be an article worth publishing for a very good reason - the sad state of Tamil film music where talent has zero respect. In TFM networking, luck, hype and mugastuthi are the only ingredients to success. You don't have to go too far to know that. It is just a click away. Speaking of the industry, I recently came across playback singer Sharada ("Around the World") and had a short chat with her. Such an unassuming woman she was.
Saravanan,
You are welcome. They are beautiful songs.

Neel D,
Pardon me but I couldn't resist it.
Sharada had every reason to be unassuming! Anybody who shrieked " Around the world in ekthaalees ( on closer hearing eight dollars) would do everything to keep it in wraps!!

Vengayam,
To this day, for the life of me, I am not able to figure out what the line is that follows "singaravelane deva", let alone the charanams. But SJ went on to become #1 in two languages for several years.

Sharada Iyengar (her full name) was discovered by Raj Kapoor when he was touring Tehran, and she was introduced by him to Shankar-Jaikishan. Titli Udi from the film Suraj (for a southern producer) was a popular hit, and to this day the "Titli Udi" prefix is the quick prompt to her name. Eschewing all the other contextual stuff about Mumbai and Monopoly, I'd just like to say that the shortening of her name - from Sharada to Sharda - packs a history of disdain that the north has doled out to artistes from the south. Of course, more than just a syllable was dropped! :-)
Her's was not an outstanding voice, but it came with formal grooming and traditional immersion. She was/is a trained Karnatak singer. To compare her with the reigning hindi playback divas of that time would be like saying that Jency or SPS were challengers to PS or LRE's throne. The more telling observation would be this: Did the latter two have a shortage of opportunities in TFM? Did they not establish their careers securely (for at least a decade) and carve their own niche? The difference is: TFM MDs gave these voices the time and space to grow - and grow familiar. That was never a consideration extended to those who went from this side to that side of the Vindhyas.
Among Sharada's songs, I find these to be memorable:
Dekho Mera Dil Machal Gaya (Suraj)
Jaane Bhi De (Around the World)
Jaane Chaman Shola Badan (Gumnaam)
Jab Bhi Yeh Dil Udaas Hota Hai (Seema)
I don't know if MIO has these, but you can check them out if you're interested.

Thanks, Sharada being a South-Indian is not a well know fact among Northies.
Though she sang a short bit, I loved the way she sings 'Aaj kal teremere pyar ke sarche...' in Brahmchaari.
Sharda benefitted in parts because of Shankar Jaikishen's tiff with Lata in the late 60s.
Not a great voice, it was good to hear a voice other than Lata/Asha
