I'm a new visitor to this website. I couldn't see anyone discussing about Vani Jayaram's songs.
Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

Naaz,
>>>Ab Kami Koyi Nahin
Now there's no cause for lament. <<<<
Don't you see a striking similarity with the Rajaji penned MS song " kuRaiyEdhum illai maRai moorththi kaNNaa, kuRaiyEdhum illai gOpaalaa"?!!

Naaz,
In "Zindagi Mein Aap Aaye", VJ sounds absolutely sweet and innocent. Like the clear-skin smile of a teenager.
VJ's voice makes you feel like you are floating in the air. Light and weightless, no thoughts, no worries. The fading humming at the end of the song is like she is flying away, in joy and fulfilment, to explore the horizon.
A delightful song.
Ramki,
I have uploaded "sorNamE sorggamE vA vA". The recording quality is not great. But the beauty is intact.
VJ's expressiveness in the song wrenches your heart. When I listen to the lines "jOdhiyAi vAzhvilE vandhavan", "pAlena nenjilE pAindhavan", "endhan vAzhvin minnalE", "mAmazai mEgamAi vandhavan", and "nenjilE pUvena pUththavan", I feel as though she is at the verge of breaking down. She does not... but I am almost moved to tears.

Neel: Thanks a lot for 'Sorname sorgame'- yes, a great song. In the film Saranya finds new meaning in her empty life, when an infant is found at their doorstep. And VJ brings out all her feelings so masterfully.
RR- Yes, : 'Indha Pennodu piranthathu nadanam,
ival kannodu vilainthathu nalinam' is a lovely song, with both singers doing a great job.

Compared to Saravanan's database (read: memory) we are all small fry. Hence, the questions you pose to me would really go places if they were posed to him.
All I can say about Samayalkaran is that it was a remake of the hindi low-b hit Bawarchi. The tamizh film starred Mu.Ka Muthu and Vennira Aadai Nirmala?? (more a guess, less a certainty.)
I remember the VJ-SJ duet, Indha Pennodu Pirandhadhu Nadanam, as a competition song, wherein two women from the same household are preparing for an all-out dancathon. The Samayalkaran is also involved in all the kitchen to kitsch stir ups. Bawarchi was the precursor to all the celebrity chef shows that waft in and out of the tube any time of the day on cable. The film was delightful (can't say the same for Khana Khazana) and I wish I could add more about the tamizh remake (just saw the song a few times on OO on TV) - but, alas.

Rajaji's words also echo the "fly away" emotions of the song (cf.and thanks to Neel.) I was hoping you'd translate the whole song for us! (that's been long overdue as well :-)

Zindagi Mein Aap Aaye has a cheery youthfulness of it throughout. And VJs attention to small nuances of the language (given that she is neither a native, nor a scholar) are present even in such a casual number. You might want to pay attention to these bits in the song: First time around when she sings "Bhar Gaya Pho*lon Se Daman" she dips with a touch of leisure, joining "Bhar" with "Gaya" with such linguistic confidence. Then, there is the line "Ab Na Shikwa Hai Na Shikayath" - where the two "Shi"s are balanced with the pressure placed on the "th" of Shikayath. This helps to prolong the word and land it metrically and with authenticity. Listen also to pronunciation of the word "REHN ke kabil hi Nahi" (the NAs perfectly placed.)
When one listens to these songs from Chalia, Ek Muththi Aasman, Guddi, Pakeezah - songs from her first year in HFM - one can't help but immediately notice the great potential of the singer (proven time and again in her later years.)
This same "Zindage" freshness pervades "Pyar Kabhie Kam Na Karna Sanam." Her only duet with KK.
The day when VJs songs from Khoon Ka Badla Khoon and Shaque make it to your website (see, hoping don't cost much :-)) I'll stop being greedy (really.)

Naaz,
I wish I knew Hindi/Urdu as much as you do. You certainly have the advantage of being able to enjoy and appreciate the songs much more than I can. Do write more about VJ's Hindi songs.
As bad as I feel about VJ not being given songs in Hindi I am happy that it happened because we now have so many classics by her in Southern languages. I wish that in the 80s she had moved to Bangalore for she only got the best songs to sing in Kannada.

Naaz,
Quite a few of the VJ ghazals that you are particularly fond of, are of Hi- Fi Urdu! As Sujatha once said "My Hindi is sufficient only to buy sabzi in Karol Bagh"!Translate karna mere bas ka nahin hai!

Naaz, Saravanan: thanks for your comments on the Samayalkaaran song. The film also has :"Naan Paadidum Kavidaigal..", another memorable song. But teh VJ-SJ song was a surprise to me. Of course, VJ's stunning opening lines were no surprise!!
What about the Suprabatam songs? I heard "Kannanai Ninaithaal" with KJY. Are there any other VJ songs? I vaguely remember "Adi Radha.." a VJ solo.

RR, yes, 'Adi Radha Srikrishnan vandhaan ragasiyam pesa, adi naan avan poojaiyil ennai marandhen anandamaaga' is a great VJ dance song from Suprabatham, with absolutely grand interludes.

There is a song from a telugu movie sung by VJ and Banumathi. I cant remember the movie's name maybe late 80s or early 90s Suhashi starter movie and Banumathi was also in that movie. Do anyone know the title of the movie and the song??

I think you are thinking about the movie Mangammagari manavadu. Bhanumathi and Suhasini sing this song on screen and VJ gave Suhasini's playback. The music for the movie was composed by KVM and had some decent, typical KVM numbers by SPB, PS, VJ and Bhanumathi. The song in question is "Sri sooryanarayanaa maeluko". It is a very cool song. It has a teasing/playful tone to it and VJ and Bhanumathi (of course) do a good job. Thanks for reminding this song which has been out of my memory for several years now.

Yes - it is indeed Mangammagaari Manavadu. That is a good song which used to be played in AIR. It has the following songs in it
- Sri Soorya naraya meluko (Bhanumati and VJ)
- Gummachoopu nimma mullu ( SPB abd SPS)
- Danchave menatta kootura (SPB and PS)
- chandurudu ninnu choosi chetulettadu (SPB and PS)
and 2 more are there.. I don't remember them now.

You excavate some real rare songs...do you have these tracks with you? (I am sure Neel D will be in touch if the answer is YES! :-))
I have not heard of the film or the song you mention. The singer list in that song is indicative - is it a gaana or dappankuththu song? I remember a similar song (assuming) by VJ-MVD for IR (lyrics might be GA too) - Vachchalaam Neththippottu Than Machchanin Nenjaththottu from the film Kungumach Chimizh. A fast-paced song with typical IR rural flavour.
BTW you should listen to the song Paduven Paduven from the website. It is a song that is tailor-made for VJs voice, range and training. A Christian Hymn with a remarkable karnadagam element. Please give it a listen - I am sure it will appeal to you.
