I'm a new visitor to this website. I couldn't see anyone discussing about Vani Jayaram's songs.
Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

Have a great day, and a great year ahead, my friend! Your commitment and sincerety is something I can never achieve--and hope you continue to grace this thread (and other threads too ;))

Oh, boy, I didn't know that our dear old friend Naaz is turning 65 today, already! (just joking, of course).
Naaz, porandha naal nal vaazhthukkal. May god bless you with good health so that you can celebrate many more such birthdays.
BTW, how does Saravanan know that it is Naaz's birthday?

Saravanan -
The gift was a good move. All is forgiven (but not accepted 'til you publicise your DOB here - now!)
Kaumudi, Sriram - thanks!
Birthdays are no big deal anymore (65 is thankfully two decades plus away - and that's the real blessing - distance!) except when one takes stock of the year and adds up all the (mis)adventures. Annual Accounts Closing madhiri :-)
And the good thing about Saravanan's "PSA" (PariSuththamanaArivippu?) is that I now know what NOT to tell him! :-)
(Also: Check out the link. Hear the brilliance.)

Thanks! (Is the couplet a quiz? If so, I am drawing a blank - that "old" feeling?) There are many dazzling angry old wise men out there - but how many of them get a compliment that's studded with scotian, cambrian and anglian superstars?

Naaz,
"Naan paadikkinde iruppen" is sung by a content, satisfied and happy married woman, a doting wife whose world is her husband. She is so content. VJ expresses just that, contentment, with a slight touch of happiness. Because more than she is happy she is content and satisfied. Listen to the song and throughout the song you feel in VJ's voice how content and secure the heroine is in her marriage.
A serene composition by MSV and fine lyrics by the lyricist (whoever that is). The lines that tell her status of wealth is brilliant.
en pAdal nI kEtka
un kaNgaL enai pArkka
nAnE un varadhatchaNai
The extra azhuththam Vani uses in those lines leave those lines etched in your memory.
If I remember correctly, it was at the 100th day celebrations of "Sirai", Bharathiraja silAkiththu chonnAr. "How nice it would be have a wife like that who can sing to you a song like that!".
Saravanan,
naan munne ezhudhiyadhu ellaam adharkul marandhu vitteergalaa?
Your answers are correct. Clues for the remaining.
1) The song has VJ and chorus.
2) A duet with Yesudas.
Ramki,
Your answer is correct. It is a very good song. I don't have it at the website yet. I have a copy that is not that great. But I will upload it anyway within the next few days.

Neel D -
Your reading of the song (and singing) sums it up nicely. Contentment is the word - and the singer brings that sense of "inner peace and tranquility" into the recital. The situation in the film is also a "homey" moment. The couple have just finished their meal, and there is some veththalapaaku madiththal in process. The hour is just before bed time and the song gives you a glimpse of their routine...which also includes singing.
BRs comment at the celebrations is exactly the craving of the anti-hero Rajesh in the film. He craves domesticity and a wife who will sing to/for him at the end of his day. In fact, this song is perhaps the moment when he stops to listen in the street. A few scenes after, he violates her.
The desire for "domesticity" conversely makes him "wild."
I remember that the story (when it was awarded a Vikatan Sirukadhai Parisu) stirred up a controversy about the portrayal of brahmins, and brahmin women. The fact that it was written by one of their own made it all the more controversial. Anuradha Ramanan was taking for task for all the wrong reasons.
There is another passage in the song which applies to the singer/and the character
Sangeetham Illamal
Sandhosham Vaeraedhu
Sareeram En Seedhanam

All,
Here are few more lines of the remaining two songs. The pallavi follows these lines.
The second line of the chorus bit is not very clear. So I have made up that line. But goes with the tune.
1) iravellAm EnOthAn thUnggAmal viziththAyO
EkkaththAl thUkkaththil kanavonRu kaNdAyO
kanavAlE ninaivinRi EdhEdh sonnAyO

Chorus: oNNum theriyAdha chinnakkA
OduRa pAdhaiyil sellakkA
thiruttu muzi muzikkiRA
edhukku chummA sirikkiRA
2) vaNNa vaNNa pU malarndhu Adum

Wish I could say I knew them all, all along...well, I wish I could :-)
That quiz was a toughie. You've got to go a tad easy with us aging folk!!
I finally managed to get a MP3 file of "Ulagam Muzhudhum Pazhaiya Raaththiri" from Nooravadhu Naal. It's been uploaded in the files section of the egroup. The recording is just above average, but its still worth having than not. Give it a listen - whenever.
Now the quest begins for the other songs from my must-haves list:
Penne Bhommiyadi, Sangeetham En Deghamandro, Manmadha Ragangale, Kanna Un Radhai Azhaikkindra Velai...I could go on, but that would only make you sick :-)

You will think this to be a fib - but it ain't. I was humming the first few bars of a hindi song, one that I couldn't fully recall, and wondered if I'd ever locate a real-audio file (I didn't think there'd be MP3 versions) somewhere that I could listen to and get the verses....
And -
There it was - at the VJ website this morning!!
Zindagi Mein Aap Aaye Ho Gayi Duniya Haseen, Bhar Gaya Pho*lon Se Daman Ab Kami Koyi Nahin...
Zindagi Mein Aap Aaye
You came into my Life
Ho Gayi Duniya Haseen
The world turned Beautiful
Bhar Gaya Pho*lon Se Daman
So many flowers of contentment
Ab Kami Koyi Nahin
Now there's no cause for lament.
Just the way I felt when I found this song today!!
The music for the film is by RDB. This is the only composition by him that was sung by VJ (with Mukesh.)
And all those accusations of VJ accented singing ...show me one line or one word in this song that is non-hindi sounding or mispronounced...and I'll enroll for a Rashtra Bhasha Refresher Course!
My heartfelt thanks for bringing this song into my zindagi again! Bless you!!

Naaz, Have you heard "Inda Pennodu pirandadu nadanam"? From Samayalkaaran? Excellent rendering by Vj and SJ (?) with jatis, swaras etc.? Also, I happened to hear "kannanai Ninaithaal" from Suprabatam (KJY_VJ-MSV). There are probably other VJ songs from this nmovie (Adi Raadha??...).
Can you enlighten us? Thanks
RR
