I have always wondered this.
If age factor is the issue, how is it that Deva who should be the in the same age group, is able to command quite a following?
Please do not insult the yonger generation by refering to deteriorating music taste.
Although there are some youngsters who prefer Ilayaraja, the number is very small.
Most youngsters prefer ARR, Deva, HJ, SAR, Vidhyasagar, etc.
Generally Ilayaraja's genre of music do not seem to hold the younger crowd. Why do you think this is?

By the way, Kannukkul Nilavu is a pretty good example why IR is unable to reach out to the younger generation, in spite of Vijay & Shalini starring in it.
Also, I saw Kutty. A depressing movie to say the least. That is not saying that it us a bad movie. But it can't be a janaranjaga movie by a long stretch.

THose days back in 80's IR command such a big following among the younger generations. The songs were good both artistically and commercially.
Nowadays the films IR does , does not need youth theme songs,,,so its not surprising it does not appeal strongly to the youth.
Whatever said IT is a fact that youth genetation nowadays have POOR taste in music. Part of these blame must go to ARR. He is the one who underlined the fact that its OK to borrow tunes from other songs. Other MD just followed in his route.
Eg..Listen to CITIZEN,,the tunes are fantastic,,the songs are hits, But how many youth out there know that ALL the songs consist of composite fantastic tunes of 70's english hit songs..??

Cool down, friend. :)
I am not "talking bad" of IR, for the heck of it.
I just want to bring a balance to this DF, before it "falls off balance." :)
Anyway, if you feel that what I have said is not correct, please point it out; we can discuss that. :)
BTW, why is ARR in the picture here? :)

u say that IR is not suitable for younger genreation.wat type of is the present younger generation is asking for.they want the bass to be high and must have some beats of the western trend.thsy do not bother abot the quality of the music and the orginality.a MD should produce his own music and must be good to listen.it should not be any music which resembles others or extracted from others.i hear all the new MD are just trying to copy and produce it.this anyone can do.IR who has done more than 800 movies is still trying to make the people listen to his music is bcoz of the music quality and creativity.i do not find this in any other MD's music.IR IS ALWAYS THE BEST.

Let us not talk about MY music taste. The question was whether Kannukkul Nilavu songs were hits.
Only a HCIRF will call it a hit!
Any one else will laugh at the suggestion. :)
Whether the songs were good or not, is very subjective. To me, the songs were horrible. :)
(Call me names if you wish, but there you have it. :)
"Look at the way he makes fun of other people in his songs." was a reference to songs MDed by him where he makes fun of other people's songs. Wanna examples? :)
My dear sensible young man, 29 vayathile ippadinaa, 59-le eppadiyo?!!! Aandavaa, ninaikkave bayamaa irukke! :)
ROTFL,
I accept that everything is subjective here. If u feel kannukkul nilavu songs are bad, it's up to u. What can i say? Same way, u cant find fault with others, right?! If u feel IR is not a choice of today, then, how come FRIENDS became a hit? ROTFL IR paavam appidinnu support panni paesineengalaa??!!:) How come Kasi is a HIT??!! Dont bring in the weak agument that these are some rare examples or something like that!! Neenga ippidi thaan paesanumnu mudivu edutthuttaa vera yaar enna solla mudiyum??

If ROTFL thinks that there are decent IR fans and there are decent IR fans is neither here nor there. Who cares a jot? What does it have to do with the price of bread? There is a cartel out to just put down IR at the drop of a hat. Good luck to them. They need it.

Sorry...just asking..is Kasi a hit album ?
But when compared to Raja's works in village-singer oriented films (Kizhakku Vaasal, Chinna Thambi, Senthamizh Paatu etc.) the songs in Kasi were average.
- From: cosmician (@ 194.170.127.161)

Maybe more so because the director of the film just wanted average songs.

You stole my question! What has all these got to do with bread? (Unless, of course if ARR runs a bakery.) :)
There is a cartel out to just put down IR at the drop of a hat.
Cartel? Like embargo? Hmm. Interesting. :)

Did u hear the BGM of "kannathil muthamittal"?
Did u like it?..just curious..

Yes Peeps. I saw the movie in a DTS cinema and the BGM was quite impressive.
Incidentally, I also loved the BGM of HeyRaam (watched in the big screen too.)
p/s: the last statement (which is true, I swear) is an insurance, in case er, you know what... :)

you know what..i watched "kannathil muthamittal"
yesterday..including me some five guys around me where closing their ears when any song sequence came..the volume level was soo high..and in the climax my Humble opinion is that the BGM was very poor..those scenes of the mother and daughter meeting for the first time(may be the last time) the BGM shud have played half the weightage of the emotions created..i felt the music was totally unrelated..
cudnt resist thinking abt the climax of kadhalukku mariyadhai climax or devadhai's..
but "oru dheivam thantha" song pallavi was really cool man..

Oh, must tell you about something. You and I think that HeyRaam BGM was good. But there was this friend of mine and his wife. They laughed aloud when I told them that the BGM was excellent (IMO). They quoted some example which I forget and said that the BGM was a joke.

cosmician - i remember reading somewhere in the net that the producer of KAAsi was very happy that audio sales was very good.... and that he was very unhappy with Vijayakanth and Co, as they had put a ban on TV - cause the producer had thought if he was allowed to do that, he would have made more money....
iam sure there are umpteen here who will argue that this is not TRUTH etc etc..... but i have nothing to prove what i say.....
and Gowri, yes, FRIENDS was a hit outside this forum too..... may be its not a real big treat from IR, but it was a hit....
