I have always wondered this.
If age factor is the issue, how is it that Deva who should be the in the same age group, is able to command quite a following?
Please do not insult the yonger generation by refering to deteriorating music taste.
Although there are some youngsters who prefer Ilayaraja, the number is very small.
Most youngsters prefer ARR, Deva, HJ, SAR, Vidhyasagar, etc.
Generally Ilayaraja's genre of music do not seem to hold the younger crowd. Why do you think this is?

Good point Saran. But then there are people who grow up, grow old and die who never listen to carnatic music. We are not talking of that genre of music. Here we are talking about Popular music.
Ennai thaalatta varuvaala was popular, no doubt about that. But those kind of songs are few and far between. By the way a song does not have to be youth oriented to be popular among the youth. A good example is "Kaathal aaraaro."
I somehow feel that Ilayaraja does not have the pulse on what the youth of today wants.

Gowri,
I appreciate ur efforts, but somehow u still feel IR doesnt have the pulse :)What i say is a slightly diff perspective. The songs are highly based on the movies and their "KaLam". If u look back into the movies IR scored music in recent times, Can u say, this song could have been done in a better way or it's not so appealing??!! Usually IR's songs ( and of course his BGM ) are apt to the situation. A good example is "Roja Poonthottam kaathal vaasam" from Kannukkul Nilavu. It was a nice, apt to the situation song and it was a hit too... Likewise, the songs in Sethu and other movies. If the director doesn't depict a scene to capture a good song, what best a MD can give? What i think is, Unlike u think as IR lost his pulse on what today's youth wants, he never cares for any generation and he usually FITS the song for the situation explained & if a song becomes hit or not doesn't matter to him!!! IMHO.
Nowadays, YOUTH generally don't want to see movies with a tough theme and rather they prefer comedy movies! I am not coming to say, NOT AT ALL, but MOSTLY!!! Best example is KUTTY. I bet most of the YOUTH crowd didn't see this wonderful masterpiece. Instead they might have seen the other EXCELLENT MOVIES!!!! Eventhough it's very hard for u to digest that the taste of YOUTH deteriorate(d)s, it's a BITTER TRUTH!!!

Hi Friends,
This is a stupid question, sorry to say this. My 2and half year old child keeps herfelf calm and silent when she hears the song 'Oliyilae Therivathu ' in Alagi. She loves the song very much. I hope this songs is composed by IR. I even believe this song is one of the best songs in recent years.
Moreover, IR is a man who is giving consistent change and creating new trends always. People are behind ARR for some time. Now the situation is changes, whether it is IR and ARR, only if they give good music people are buying the cassetes. Lot of new comers are dominating this Music field. Bharatway, Yuvan, Bharani ( his lates Ladies and Gentle men is doing extremely well than any other movie in SriLanka.), Haris Jeyaraj, Iman and Karthik Raja. They gave some wonderful songs in recent times. Compared to ARR's recent ones, they are much better. I hope ARR is out in the picuture. His last five or six movies are utter flops and songs are horrible to hear. Kannathil Muththamittal - much hyped moved gets low response in song wise. His touch is slowly out of order. Some hardcore ARR fans could not accpet this. But they have to understand this is the face. Roja Kootam , Junior Senior are top in cassetle sales. Kannathil Muthamitaal never been on the top. But even in this new - generation wave, still if you listen Friends/Kaasi/Alagi, you can understand the variety in IRs music and still he is dominating his part very well and keep the young generation with him. For hard core ARR fans - 'Poonai Kannai Moodivittal, ulagam iruttallaa'.

If you think that songs of Kannukkul Nilavu were hits, God bless you. :)
IR does not care whether his songs are hits or not? You got to be joking. Look at the way he makes fun of other people in his songs. Does that show a man who is not bothered? :)
Kutty is an art movie, like the horrible Mugam. It is therefore not a movie for general consumption.
Since you say that the taste of youth has deteriorated, can I ask you a question. Thaathaavukku enna vayasu? Oru 55 irukkumaa? :)

Robin oh Robin
This is in reply to your "intelligent" posting to the "stupid" question.
I suggest that you expose your child to all kinds of music, thereby at least making him/her more knowledgeable thn you. :)
You are hoping that ARR is out of the picture?
Well, beggars will soon be riding horses. :)
As for poonai kannai katti konda kathai, I have already used that on HCIRFs. So, go try to think of some thing new. :)

Robin, Robin. You've got to be careful what you say. Looks like you have blown your chances of being dubbed a "decent IR fan" by ROTFL. I myself have spent many a sleepless night wondering where I've gone wrong and how I got to miss that coveted "award".

You lost it when you said "it was IR who brought village/folk songs to TFM."
Now you can sleep peacefully. :)

ROTFL,
I think, it is better for you, to answer my postings. Don't spend time on analysing me and my personal things(like I am a knowledgeble person or not). I just put what I have seen and I have heard. I am not a person who can advice you to behave as a descent man. But I have rights to say that do not affend me by you silly wordings.

Tigger,
I don't want any compliments from ROTFL. He can have his personal opinion about IR and ARR. It is purly his. But, he need not comment on knowledge level and so on.

Magix,
do u think it is as simple as asking for it? ROTFL's award is given once a year and this year the award has already been given. Eden won it last year. It's presented every year just before the Oscars, and boy! It's a grand show. Drums roll, angels clap, and ROTFL glides down in his flowing robes, touches the winner with his sword and says "I a pleased to see yet another decent IR fan.."
Robin,
you dont really realize the worth of this award. It's the holy grail of awards. Poor miserable me failed to win it, but one day I hope to be worthy of it..

ROTFL,
If u think kannukkul nilavu songs are bad, i pity on ur music taste. I didn't mean the album was a hit, becos i really dont know about it!! But i know that particular song was popular!!( may be, IS POPULAR ) Reg all the other songs, except adidaa melatthai, they are all good and far excellent that the so called HITS of recent times. ( that excludes azhagi and kasi:)) )
"Look at the way he makes fun of other people in his songs." --- I cant make out anything from this.
To say the music taste of youth had detoriated, one need not be a THAATHA, but a sensible young man!!! By the way, i am not coming to say that u are not sensible...:) Anyway, intha thaathaavukku 29 vayathu aakirathu, pothumaa???!!
OOOPS! i forgot, if u think KUTTY is just an art movie, i really pity on the YOUNGER GENERATION!!!! This really shows how horrible the TASTE OF YOUNGER GENERATION!!!!! Thirunthungappaa...:(

Let us not talk about MY music taste. The question was whether Kannukkul Nilavu songs were hits.
Only a HCIRF will call it a hit!
Any one else will laugh at the suggestion. :)
Whether the songs were good or not, is very subjective. To me, the songs were horrible. :)
(Call me names if you wish, but there you have it. :)
"Look at the way he makes fun of other people in his songs." was a reference to songs MDed by him where he makes fun of other people's songs. Wanna examples? :)
My dear sensible young man, 29 vayathile ippadinaa, 59-le eppadiyo?!!! Aandavaa, ninaikkave bayamaa irukke! :)
