unmai,
following ur sincere request for baba reviews from fans, here is a humble try:
baba theme:
i heard both baba theme and that al capone piece from the untouchables in karthik's page, and to be frank i didn't hear out any similarities, perhaps i didn't listen carefully enough. but what i did notice after several listenings is the influence of ennio morricone, but not that particular piece in karthik's page, just overall feeling, but also only the first 25 seconds. bass voice by srinivas is pleasing to hear, peace-giving feeling. well actually there is not much to say about this one, i don't even care to count this as a song, just something like bgm.
dipu dipu: i didn't like the way shankar mahadevan starts with 'baba...' (at first and second listening it even sounded a bit like 'baba baba blacksheep have u any wool' piece that was posted somewhere weeks before the release. i mean only the first time he says baba). the marching part sounded cool, as if something big was to come, and then i must admit i was disappointed to hear the brruuuaahh and the beat and also shanker mahadevan's first lines 'dipu dipu dipu dipu dipu kumari', which he sang with a strange voice trying to be easy..but thank god he did it only for the first line. and someone already mentioned this song do have a hangover feeling from tlobs, but as we haven't heard that much punjabi type songs from arr, it's okay he tried it in tamil too. i loved the part 2:00 to 2:10...quite cute...
also liked the words 'inthu vantha thalamurayku vazhti cholli vazhgave' (sorry, don't know tamil) almost at the end.
after repeated hearing i liked this song for its energy and catchy tune. (though at times it was pretty loud)
baba kichu kichu: first i didn't like it at all, at least the beginning, cause the tune and beat was too simple. but then, when spb enters (raghu are u reading this?) it felt majestic, simply great...not that i didn't like the female voice, but spb should have dominated this song. especially when he sings 'anbage nee vandhal baba oru pillay adi'..great...then the interludes (it's the first time i'm using this word, cause now i think i know what is meant with it)...wonderful..takes the song to new heights..u know first when u start hearing the song, the beats, then u think its too normal...but then when u hear further and get into the 'mood' of the song, then u'll learn appreciating it. at least i made that experience.
maya maya: before release i read somewhere that vaali had said that rahman had created a great tune to which he had written the lyrics. as i almost don't understand tamil (a bit i do as a malayalee) i orientate myself according to the beauty of the words, i mean how they sound, and i must admit there are a lot of such words in tamil. but maya and chaya surely don't belong to them. chaya means tee in malayalam, in tamil not? hehe...well...didn't like the tune in that part either..way too simple, nothing extraordinary at all. but, but, with santhoshi santhoshi it becomes better, also the beats...the rest of the refrain is also good. and then starts the magic, the interlude, and then the charanams, so calm and charming. but here i must say i didn't like karthik in first charanam much. it's a girls song somehow. (please mind that i'm saying this without knowing the meaning of the lyrics). the most phenomanal thing about this song was sujatha! bamm...what an entry, what a voice, what a sweetness... i loved her part...
raajiyama: funny sound accompanying the beats. it's strange, but this is the only song i liked instantly on first hear, and i liked jayachandran's voice too (cause normally i don't)..i love the part when he goes to high pitch with '....baba jaaaathakam' and '....kai thodum baba thaan' (second charanam). otherwise there is not much to say about this song, good singing by jayachandran as i already said. oh, and yes, i almost forgot, in the second part of this song, the starting 30 second of this 'new' instrument duduk playing is very nice, especially cause its sound is new to my ears.
sakthi kodu: didn't like this on first hearing. as a certain flow was missing, it was not easy to like it at the beginning. but then, after hearing it more often i explored the flow i was searching for, still there are certain portions i still don't like that much as they don't seem to fit to the rest. and yes, the lyrics, i liked it. cause i heard out many word that even i understood, yeah...'munvaitha kaale naan pinvaika maate'...'uppitai thamizh-mannay naan marakamatee'...powerful, fiercy words...
sometimes there is a bit too much music in it, so that karthik's voice becomes hard to understand. mood-wise i could say this one belongs to the vetri kodu type song.
i knowingly didn't rate the songs cause i'm not quite comfortable with this rating system. numbers can't rate music.
something i would like to note is: i read here so often how the songs were reviewed in connection with 'it's a rajini-film'. i personally haven't seen even one of his films. for how many films has arr scored music? 50? i may have seen 5 of them, taal, indian, lagaan, kadhalan..those are the ones i remember now...so what i'm trying to say is, for me only the music counts, and nothing else. so 'arguments' like 'it doesn't suit to rajini' aren't valid for me at all. but on the other side, if someone asks me why the songs aren't that great, i would say: 'cause it's a rajini-film, so not much space for experimenting'.
a curiosity at the end: i don't like the word baba at all. it sounds sooo childish, like some silly baby-word.
okay, now i would also like to say that everything written above are just my personal feelings and not meant to hurt anyone, either anybody here in this forum nor arr, rajini, baba and so on.

Well thanks for the effort raycas. I went through lots of reviews myself. Roughly I would say 50% infavour of Baba Music. I do not have the patience to write review for each song in it.
I just stated my general opinion. But as an ARR fan i expected far more than he has given. It is just my opinion. I find 90% of ARR fans are overwhelmingly satisfied with this album. I fall into that 10% category. Anyway good luck with the album.

This is to maddy:
Don't you think it is unfair to ask someone not to visit a thread? You mentioned ARR's thread. Did he buy this thread outright? I only wish people show more maturity in posting threads.

IK and unmai,
all the different journals posting their own reviews doesnt mean that they are accurate in that... Take for instance, Sun Tv top 10 says that Thamizh is in no.1 position... u look at the movie and u have to feel sorry for the tamil movie fans that there are 9 worse movies than thamizh and that's why Thamizh is in no.1 position.... Not that Thamizh is a good or bad movie, but it is the no.1 movie out of the 10 and they have to appreciate it in some way or the other…. I agree that reviewers are paid to write their reviews but they are people like us, with their own likes and dislikes.. They too are biased and I remember reading a review for Citizen in Hindu which said that the movie was gr8 and was in par with 'Indian'... The movie got out of theatres in 2 weeks..
Vikatan does not grade any rajini movies ... They have been stung a couple of times doing that.. Sub standard movies have been projected as good ones and good ones have been projected as sub standard... In addition they add something like Hero and Zero or Highlight etc... These forums are few places where an individual can review the movie or the music, and you get some appreciation or criticism for that...Not that ppl have to accept the review but atleast he enjoys the pleasure of opening his mind to many.. whereas professionals have a standard way of appreciating as well as criticising.. a standard review would say 'story line is weak... flashback was lengthy... 2 songs were good... photography was good etc.. etc..' with 40 marks..
A manirathnam movie or shankar movie would get away with all the flaws whereas a kasthuriraja or k.s. ravikumar movie would be pulled down for small mistakes... There are lots of ppl in our state going to movies after reading vikatan’s or kumudham’s review..
I find quite a few ppl repeating their reviews, probably to get the tfm'ers appreciation... the same happens with -ve reviews too...In this particular forum, there is a valid point that ppl post again and again becos of the volume of postings...

thiru, people who make such kinda shoddy comments defame all MD's, whom they are for or against. I am very clear in that. They don't require any special attention. Let's not give a seat here for MD comparisons.

Point taken Thiru. I dont disagree that the pro reviewers deliver more of a stereo type than a fresh, ethusiastic review and are also individuals with personal opinions.
As regards repeaters, the forum here has people of three types posting reviews,
1) Genuine reviewers with no intention to rate music directors, they just rate the songs (I believe that you cannot rate music directors with one movie's songs, that too, with some half baked knowledge about the songs, without seeing the songs in the movie itself & without experiencing the BGM in the movie)
2) People who post crap and nothing but crap just to bash one music director instead of another and also post the same views again and again without being prompted for it.
3) People who rate MDs instead of the songs in question.
I really do not blame the reviewers who take the time to type long reviews of the 1st category above (or even the 3rd category - pardonable) and want to make sure that it stays on every active page as more posts get added to this thread. But I would disagree with re-posting of reviews of the 2nd category above.
