Magix,
I am really proud of you dude! I have no idea what the hell you were talking there.. but atleast you were able to offend one ARR Fan (Maddy) and one IR Fan( Osho, Note to Magix : You better stay away from this guy, he seems to know lot about music! :) ). And worst of all Jacky is talking about Interludes. Unoda writing ifflo serious ah edurkiranka endu ninaikum pothu Romba ROmba perumaiya irukuda!! thops,
idhayam illai-nu sollavarala... musical knowledge adhigamaave irukkum-nu solla vandhen! :)
Osho,
Age factor adhunaala thaan naan avoid panna paarthen!! :) But admit it.. ppl who've grown up listening to IR's songs tend to connect atleast at an emotional level to IR's compositions.
Idhuve naan kuzhandhaiya irukkumbothu Sindhu Bhairavi paatukku sandhoshama thalaiyaateetu, ippo Rahman-a "thalaiva"-nu koopidaadha kuraya irukkaen! :) Ennakku seriya explain panna varala.. life-la oru vishayatha urupadiya discuss panninadhum kidayaathu! mebbe, all this will be useful when I hafta attend GDs!
As for my posts on IR.. it was all my personal opinions, what (i think) i've observed. :)
Personally, I enjoy only the kinda classy melodies he churns out(I loved the ones in Virumandi). But whenever he tries something err.. modern, I jus stay off! Shya Shya from Friends made me do something I dont do too often.. pummel my pillow! romba kadupu aaiduchu! Whenever my mom sees me listenin to FM, she goes "kanraaviya irukku paatu, off pannu" (even if that's her fave song! :D), and i reply "nalla thaan irukku. Off ellam panna mudiyaathu". That song made me look like an obedient son. I switched it off w/o a word. :)
(errr... I'm not generalising here.. jus talking abt that one song :D)
The chorus part too, was IMO. Lotsa IR songs i've heard had nasal, almost shrieking chorus. Avalo nerama enjoy pannina paatu, andha oru second-la veruthu poidum. It's especially evident in village based compositions.

I didn't include IR here, since I don't consider him as a Music Director, because music directors are creating music. Since I found IR beyond this category, I didn't include him. I feel IR is a Musical Genious like Beethovan and Mozart.

Osho,
As magix said, I too feel that age is a factor. Atleast with the majority. The style of music which you grow up listening to is generally what you get accustomed to and that tends to have an edge over the others. So it is just a matter of one's own liking and that in no way puts down the genius of a composer. This, I guess, is what magix is trying to convey.
People currently prefer rhythm based songs, new sounds and peppy music and that's what we get. Rather than a question of which trend is healthy, it is just a matter of which trend you prefer.
There are ofcourse exceptions as you said. (You need to be below 25 or 30 to qualify as young, yaena age kuraikkara party niraya paer irukaanga newtfmpage-la :-)) But I feel not many get back to cherish what was already cherished. Indha kaalaththula pasanga appadi irukaanga, enna seyya! En friend-oda car-la porachae FM-la IR paato MSV paatto vandha maathiduvaan. Yaenda nalla paattu da adhu-nu sonna, poda azhagu vadiyudhu adhellam kaekka mudiyaadhu-nu solluvaan! Mukkaalvaasi paer ippadi dhaan thiriyaraanga :-)
Avan kaekkaama irukkardhaala IR-o MSV-o mattam aagida poradhu illai, avan adhu kaekkadhadhu naala avan veththuvettu-nu sollavum mudiyaadhu. Idhaan magix koovikinu irukaan ninaikkaraen :-)
"Plus, its only after a song that emotionally affects you, you begin to dig deeper about the nuances of the composition and not vice versa."
ARR songs kaekka kaekka pudhu pudhu sounds kandu pudikkalaam. Adhu ellam kandu pudicha appuram dhaan paatu amsama irukkum :-)

May be I am a Musical Gnana Sooniyam......but I kind of liked Yuvan Shankar Rajah's music from his day 1 with 'Eera Nila' in Aravinthan. When I bought eagerly Padaiyappa (In my days of 'padiyappa') and i regeretted buying it, there was Yuvan's Poovellam Kaetupar in the second half of cd..which justified buying it! My affair with Yuvan's music started like that. :( Today I expect more from Yuvan's album than anyone else......Yuvan Rules!!

Its sad that you rate a composer based on your perceived number of fans. Apdi paatha you would say Back Street Boys are better than Saint Tyagaraja?? If you really care about this topic, try to have a reasonable opinion. Otherwise just don't post. Its your loss that you can't appreciate the depth of IR's music.
My top 3:
1. IR
2. MSV
and ARR at a distant 3rd

obviuosly, Backstreet Boys are more popular than Tyagaraj but they are of different genres of music......here my frnd had compared beethoven and mozart with IR on basis of WCM, that is y i took out this statement...compare ppl. on similar genre of music........

MADDY...cool down buddy
Like I said in my earlier post, each of us has his/her preferences. You have your reasons for liking ARR more than IR or other MDs. Similarly others (including me) have their (my) reasons for choosing other MDs (IR) over ARR. That’s the purpose of this discussion - to state our opinions. I stated my opinion. I mentioned the way I feel about each MD and why I prefer one over the other. So, if you prefer ARR over IR, I think you should state why you feel so. It need not be technical in nature...it could be emotional or could involve any other aspect of music (I think you have mentioned some of it here)
I am not sure how the argument, "if someone could reach more outside people, they are a better musician," can be used here (there are several counter arguments, but this is not the point of discussion). It’s not about what others think; it’s what you think, and why you think so. If you have done AHP analysis / scoring method to make decisions, you would have some objective understanding of what I am talking about here. For instance, we might have different attributes (in this case technology, quality of sound, complexity in composition, melody, impact, orchestration and so on) in deciding the ranking of each MD. Each of these attributes might have different meaning (weights) to each of us; therefore our rankings of MDs would be affected by these weights. Similarly, I guess you prefer those attributes that ARR is stronger on, and I guess I prefer those attributes that IR is better at (or it could be that even in these attributes you ARR over IR).
I am sure IR has his flaws (these could be flaws in your eyes; it may not be so in mine). OK...let me put it this way - "In my (underline my) eyes I believe IR has fewer flaws than ARR. In my posting, I concentrated on the positive rather than talking up the negatives. For the MDs I had placed below IR, I had to mention the tipping factors that made me place them there.
Of course, there are few things that I do not I like in IR songs, like the chorus singers ( I agree with magix here) and some of his songs could have had better rhythm sections (some times I find them repetitive). But I like IR in spite of these drawbacks (again this in my opinion).
In this fashion each of us can communicate to others, what endears us to a MD. I think this a better way to convey our opinion than just plain mud slinging (a better way to break the mold).

Thops and C~P,
I fall into the same category. Started listening to IR's 85's song then, with "Thalaivars (ARR)" entry, started listening to ARR and now back to basics. Looking back to IR's songs (particularly those from 1977 - 1985) has been a pleasant experience. His range is unparalleled in IFM.
Magix,
I'm not sure about what you mean by Recording quality. What aspect are you talking about?. Is it the mixing or just the amplification of the sound. I have a Sony RV60 hi-fi, and i find that Virumandi is quite good. In fact, i thought that the Aytha Ezhuthu cd quality (in terms of amplification and not mixing) was poor. Can you throw some light on this. Pundits please divulge on this recording stuff!.
Magix, if you really want to hear some great chorus singing from IR listen to "Solla Solla" from ellam inba mayam (1981) a rajni kanth starrer. SPB's boisterous singing and the chorus singing interwoven with instruments are a lesson on intuitive chorus usage. If you want some observations on this song, i can cut and paste what i wrote for the yahoo IR group.
