Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

Yesterday, I watched an old movie called Mazhalai pattalam. This movie has 2 great songs in it. SPB & VJ's duet 'Gowri manohariyai kandaen...'. What a song! MSV's one of the best. Both SPB and VJ did a wonderful job in this song.

naaz, there you go again. even as i was typing out vellale I was also thinking of the duet you mentioned. but two nama namas I didn't want so somehow i managed to push it into the background. But you have brought it to the fore. The film featured Saradha & Usha Mandini oops Nandhini!;-)
playing a nit wit wanna be detective. After lot of scratching I can remember
SPB's nursery rhyme
I am a little tea pot
& TMS's
Thangangalle naalai thalaivargale. But after that my mind refuses to move
We will leave it to Saravanan & OISG( people who can dig out Arthamulla Aasaigal for me can do anything!)
Also if Sorgam came after 1970 you can include
" Ponmagal vandhaal" this was one song where you do not distinguish betweenTMS & Sivaji. Siamese twins as it were.

Naaz: A shivaji duet that came to my mind:
Maanthorana Veediyil from Paattum Baratamum
(TMS-PS).

There are many Non MSV songs suggested , like Uthaman.
For Non Shivaji, Non MGR songs of MSV, I suggest the following : Any song from Avalukkendra oru manam , any song from Venniraadai, "Aval oru pacchai kuzhandhai paadum paravai" (SPB/PS),
"kAADHAL KAADHAL ENRU PESA"(SPB,PS from UVUV),
"PAAL NILAVU NERAM" (SPB,PS) ,"kAADHAL VILAIYAADA KATTIL IDU KANNE"

There's such good abundance when it comes to MSVs film scores. The hardest part is selection by elimination (what it amounts to in the final analysis, and that's not such a bad thing when you ( glace at the compilation and go into self-contratulatory mode:-) All the songs you recommend are not only fine examples, they are also rare to comeby. I've been looking for Idhu Undhan Veetu Kili Than, and Aavaniyai Kondada Vandhan (LV- Lottery Ticket) for even god doesn't remember how long. I have Poonkodiye, but that is a sad audio file. Mana Medai is another song I have, but the problem is consistent. Old recordings on sony tapes go kony with time.
I have some lead time on the broadcast date. I'll try to include something from everybody's list, but all of it will be determined by audio files and their quality.
Thanks for the suggestions.

Hi all,
here's my next upload- a rarely heard VJ song-'Ennendru solvenadi' from Ninaipathu Niraiverum.
(Sorry about the poor audio quality)

Saravanan -
It's been a bumper week for the VJ replays! How rare! The much sought after Sangeetham En Dhegamandro shows up at the egroup (wow, worth the wait in every syllable!) and a VJ duet makes its way to SOTD. I'm not one for reading profundity in film titles, but this time I'll give in to the consonance of resolve: Ninaipadhu Niraiverum.
Ennendru Solvenadi is an unusual and interesting tune. The unpredictable pacing of the song and the zany instrumental interludes, pull you in like two visions of burnished curiosity. I was reminded of Kalaimagal Kai Veenai Muzhangudhamma, although there the divide of East and West is deliberate, and hence obvious. VJ glides through the jumps and curves like a songbird on skiis.
Thanks for sharing the file.

Thank you so much Saravanan. Ennendru Solven? Nothing the beat the magic of a 70s song. What a lovely song!! The pallavi, charanam and the interludes all are so distinctly different from each other yet woven together into a beautiful garment by MLS. In both "ninaippadhu niraiverum" and "ennendru solvenadi" one can see the effort MLS has put into every part of the song (prelude, interludes, pallavi and charanam). That also explains the length of the songs being over 5 minutes. Extended pleasure. He certainly was trying the prove his talent and he did succeed. But who can break the illusions and monopolies of TFM industry. How sad MLS did not get to compose all that much in tfm. But how fortunate we are that Vani got to sing these two songs. Naaz, like you said Vani is a songbird on skiis, in both the songs. She makes this rare composition sound so easy.

Saravanan,
I think you are the best 'gopher' I could seek for my ever longing thirst to hear an obscure VJ song with words like "I have no mother , father and nobody to bother" from the film "Sorgathil Thirumanam". Needless to say this song was the only bright spot to this dark film.

Mythila:
"Enakkenna manakavalai - Sorgathil thirumanam
Singers:VJ - Music:???
Yet again, who was the MD? I think the song was picturized on Latha.
Enakkenna manakavalai
inippillai kasappum illai
ithu oru thuravu nilai
mazhayile nanaikiren
veyilil kaaigiren
Has VJ speaking English in between- "No mother, no father, we don't bother" and again "Where we begin, where we end, then and there, we have no friend".
VJ superbly brings out the frustrations and disappointments which the heroine has undergone and her "don't care" attitude at present."
(from the VJ chronology)
And you can listen to it at page 11 of solos in the above website.

Friends,
Around 1.5 years back, I had written in this thread as follows:
I remember to have read T.R.Ramanna in 'Bommai' that he witnessed a quarrel between a mother and her daughter in a flight. Inspired(!) by this theme, on landing at Madras, he wrote the screenplay for 'Sorggaththil ThirumaNam', a Lata-Ravichandran-Sowcar starrer. He says 'Vimaanaththil SaNdai' only became 'Sorggaththil ThirumaNam'. According to him, ' After all, Vimanam =Sorgam and SaNdai=ThirumaNam!!!!'

Hi All!
Today is Martyrs' Day- the day when Mahatma Gandhi fell to an assasin's bullet. Let us remember him, and all those who laid down their lives for our nation.
Listen to Bapuji's favorite hymn here:
http://us.f2.yahoofs.com/bc/3ffe4e38_e028/bc/martyrsday.mp3?bfZnpGABU8xuWbkH
In case you're wondering, this song is very much from a Tamil film!
It was discussed as part of the VJ chronology of 1977:
Vaishnava janatho - Olimayamaana Ethirkaalam
Singers:VJ - Music:Vijayabhaskar
I was amazed that this hymn finds palce in full in this film. I wonder at its relevance in the story line.
This was the favourite hymn of the Father of the Nation. It celebrates the equality amongst men. It became popular even in the South. D.K.Pattammal had sung the song in Sindhu Bhairavi Ragam and made it immensely appealing. Of course the first verse is heard in "Hey Ram" too, sung by Vibha Sharma, before "Vaaranam aayiram" follows. I have heard that originally D.K.Pattammaal did sing "Vaishnava Janatho" for "Hey Ram" under the baton of L.Subramaniam, who was later replaced by Ilayaraja.
Vijayabhaskar restricts the instrumental music to a bare minimum, the tampoora and tabla, a little bit of flute in the interlude. Vani is simply spellbinding and sings the lines with remarkable understanding and fervor.
The hymn is in Gujarati and was written by Baghat Narsingh Mehta. Here are those famous lines, with a translation:
Vaishnov Jan to taynay kahyeeje
Jay peerh paraaye janneyray
Par dukkhey upkar karey koyey
man abhiman na anney ray
(A godlike man is one
Who feels another's pain
Who shares another's sorrow
And pride does disdain)
Sakal lokma Sahuney bandhey
Ninda Na karye kainee ray
Baach kaachh, Man nischal Raakhey
dhan-dhan jananee tainee ray
(Who regards himself as the lowliest of the low
Speaks not a word of evil against any one
One who keeps himself steadfast in words, body and mind
Blessed is the mother who gives birth to such a son)
Samdrishi nay trishna tyagee
par-stree jaynay mat ray
Vivihva thaki asatya na bolay
par-dhan nav jhaley haath ray
(Who looks upon everyone as his equal and has renounced lust
And who honours women like he honours his mother
Whose tongue knows not the taste of falsehood till his last breath
Nor covets another's worldly goods)
Moh maaya vyaayey nahin Jeynay
dridth vairagya jana manma ray
Ram-nam-shoom taalee laagee
Sakal teerth seyna tanma ray
(He does not desire worldly things
For he treads the path of renunciation
Ever on his lips is Rama's holy name
All places of pilgrimage are within him)
Vanloohee nay kapat rahit chhay
Kaam, Krodh nivarya ray
Bhane Narsinhyo tainoo darshan karta
kul ekotair taarya re
(One who is not greedy and deceitful
And has conquered lust and anger
Through such a man Saint Narsaiyon has a godly vision
Generations to come, of such a man, will attain salvation)
What wonderful lines! And how relevant it is even today! Let us remember the great Mahatma, all that he lived for and the cause he died for. In a touching tribute to Gandhiji, Pandit Nehru said "In ages to come, centuries and many millenniums after us, people will think of this generation when this man of God trod the earth and will think of is who, however small, could also follow his path and probably tread on that holy ground where his feet had been. Let us be worthy of him. Let us always be so".
Let us at least try.
