the sonification of cool & hip.
that unfettered acoustic drumming! when will we hear it again?
"nagachchaayam" - haven't heard that before. only occurrence of this word in TFM?

"But take out the TVG jathi the song sails pretty close to MooduPani's Vanengum Thanga Vin meengal."
Guess you are referring to Moondram Pirai not Moodupani ?

Sigappu Rojakkal/Tik Tik Tik was far better than the so called movies with message like Alaigal Oivathillai which were unrefined and over-the-top in their narrative styles and saved by songs. But our audiences have always rejected such slick entertainers. Thiruda Thiruda for Manirathnam is another one. They would rather prefer loud, overly emotional "message" movies with oodles of overacting :-)

Tik Tik Tik, besides the 3 memorable songs, reminds me also of the villain ('Enakku ella niyangalum theriyum, ella dharmangalum theriyum'), Thengai Srinivasan ('Arjunanukku villu--') and YGP ('Enna mazhai sooda peiyrathu!!').
Thamizhlayae Ti(c)k aagalai, wonder why IV Sasi chose to remake it in Hindi ( 'Karishma' stg. Kamal, Vijayeta Pandit). Even Ninaithaale Inikkum atrociously dubbed as Pyara Tarana fared better than Karishma!

Vijay
IMHO Vetri Vizha was a real slick entertainer, well scripted and it was a hit.Tik3 had a stupid story line ,a pathetic villain and an incoherent script. To smuggle 3 diamonds i have never seen a longer & confusing game plan.He could have as well got RBI's permission and paid the duty instead of such elaborate arrangements.Same is the case with Thiruda Thiruda.
Many of Jai's movies(last one was Thunive Thunai) and RaviC's Naan ,Athey KangaL were slick thrill entertainers and were hits.
IV Sasi must have needed a big loss for set off and carry forward of losses.Vijayeta Pandit.....Kumar Gaurav's only contribution to Indian Cinema was stopping Ms.Pandit from acting after shadi!

OISG, Kazhugu and Garjanai were released around in 1981 and probably ran for 100 days:-)I rest my case.Dont tell me that our audiences are so particular about flawless logic. Tik Tik Tik was a clear departure from the mindless masala movies that were successful in 1981. There are plenty of them. I could list more.

Thiruda Thiruda was infinitely better than Singaaravelan or Brahma that probably had longer runs at the BO the same year.

tik tik tik did not work because of BR- people wanted something else. had the movie released without public knowing who the director was it would have been a bigger hit. yes it did have a 100 day run at least at AVM Rajeswari!
OISG you should appreciate the fact that it was a slick entertainer without even a touch of revenge and mother sentiment which is the bane of most "entertainment" movies. only one concession is anna-thangai dialogue bet Kamal & radha. The stunt in the kamal's dark room is done with finesse.

And, if I remember right, it was with Tik Tik Tik that things started ticking between Kamal and Sarika - she had a guest role, as the first diamond carrier.

OISG,
Vijayeta Pandit never got to marry Kumar Gaurav! After their much publicised love affair, KG married Sunil Dutt's daughter. I have read Sulakshana Pandit (VP's elder sister)lamenting in many gossip columns!

Song of the Day: maanuthu mandhaiyile from kizhakku cheemaiyilE.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/maanuthu.rm
- Sung by S.P.B and chorus. Music by A.R.Rahman in this Bharathiraja film.
- My sister called me up and chided me for not sending her "seer" for kaarthigai deepam. Reminded me of this song. The ever-famous lyrics are always useful in asking brothers for seeru, especially when the sister has had a newborn :)
Vairamuthu writes,
"aattup paal kudichchaa aRivazhinji pOgumunnu
erumaip paal kudichchaa Eppam vandhu sErumunnu
kaaraan pasu Otti vaaraandi thaai maaman"
Who sends a cow these days? A month subscription to Arogya milk, may be!
When this song was released, Gandhi supporters took exception to Vairamuthu writing that "aattup paal kudichchaa aRivazhinji pOgumunnu". In Kumudam or Vikatan, Vairamuthu even tried to justify by quoting vague scientific stats!
- SPB does his Malaysia Vasudevan impression in this song. May be Malaysia Vasudevan himself should have sung this song.

wow! what a nice song! in our house, if I sing the songs from kizhaku cheemaiyile, my sisters do whatever I ask and vice versa. There are three more similar song "Malarndhum Malaradha" and "Thaayin Muham Ingu" and "Oru Thanga Rathathil". But among all these songs "Malarndhum Malaratha" and "Then Kizhaku Cheemaiyile" stood first always.

Idhu oru nilaakaalam - adhu oru kanaa kaalam.
The opening prelude with a muffled chorus , majestic trumpet, bass guitar ,
,rocky beats followed by husky, sensous SJ's voice, the guitar flow that
comes in the 2nd bgm after that (male or female ??? ) hum "Thaa ra ra" ,aren't these enough to send me into a delirium ?
Inspite of being slick , slightly ahead of time(beauty pageant thing was relatively new, down south),IR's terrific background score, the movie couldn't make a mark due to lack of emotional content. SigappuRojakkal scored in that.
Hope KKS shapes up as a neat crime thriller, with modern big wigs like Sujatha, ARR
being roped in.

I am trying to locate this song from a movie I saw in childhood. It has Shivaji in it in an unhappy marriage in a village. He falls in love with a young woman. There is a song in it that goes..."ku ku.....kuyile kuyile.....nee thaana andha kuyil"
If anybody knows what movie or song this is, I would be grateful!! Thanks!! This is probably the wrong spot to post this query.

Looking at the storyline of the early 80's Tamil film, "Tik Tik Tik", it appears that the latest much-hyped (but major Flop) Bollywood movie BOOM is based on it!

Hello Friends,
This is one of the good folk songs by ARR. The lyrics are a mixed bag. Like a curate's egg they are good in parts.
The first stanza refers to the food practices called 'paththiyam' followed for new mothers. A very rare piece in TFM.

I guess this was the first folk song by ARR... Though athangarai marame & Then kizhakku cheemaiyile were good, they were a lil bit westernized... this song & Kathaazhang kaattuvazhi had the typical folk touch to it... Very well delivered by SPB..

sometimes vairamuthu goes overboard with his ethugai monai(inthiran thotathu muthiriye is unbeatable in this category....) .........think attupal kudicha arivazhinji(!?) pogumunnu is just a filler(couldnt understand what polikattil(?) koovum kuyile means :( in this context..............)......the rest of the song is very apt for the situation and you felt the joy spreading in you hearing SPB...very contagious.......
