The biggest complaint I have with KR's style is he digitises the singers' voices too much. Most of his songs have blatantly noticeable digital modulations.
Does anyone else feel the same??

Ramki, I think you are responding to Karthik's tune, which is surely good. But like in our kottaikkul, he adds a chorus/doubling effect to the vocals. He is using this technique too often, once in a while it is okay as a novelty, but not this often. onnu rendu songs vocals sound like it is being produced from inside a well. Agreed, he wants to highlight the rhythm and push the vocals behind (unlike in that IR or SPB song) . But the reverb effect added to the vocals is not of good quality. Most times the levels of various instruments are not balanced well (Certain instruments should be recorded at a low level compared to others). A successful MD should have an ear for the sound as well.
Karthik needs to translate his composing skills into good pleasant/enjoyable recordings.
(NagaS, people could argue on how musically wise Yuvan is, but there is no argument on how worldy-wise he is. What a shrewd young guy !!!. He is the first guy to deliver sound quality and style comparable to ARR !!! Even if the sound engineers did the job, see how much talent he has to immediately embrace the technology which ARR has been using and guarding it as a secret for a while !! )

I defintely agree that the chorus effect and the high pitch distracts the listener a bit .I think it is the sound mixing and recording which does the tracking ..a couple of points too ..
1. I think the chorus is also introduced to give a meaning to the theme ..spilt personality (????)..even in a beat song like onnu rendu he has captured the theme excellently . In Onne rendu song the two interludes are drastically different ,one with a westeren Irish /sountry violin and the second with a Jazz Sax and a percussion ...
2.Same case with oru Kottaikul ..The two interludes are drastically different ...While the first interlude is bit sufi type ,backed by the orchestra suggesting the confused mind of the hero ,the second interlude has some kind of John Williams touch in it indicating the change in his mind . After the end of charanam ,there is change in mood where the female pitch goes up ...
3.Both the songs adi kilye ,enga poi solluven indicate the normal state of the hero, meaning simple sadness, simpel happiness etc - Iam just guessing ,thats why you don't see any differenc ein the approach in the interludes...
4.Theme music - The same ,it starts smooth and ends up in a very disturbing note ..The initial piece indicates the normal state of teh hero and then the temp changes indicating the change in hero's mind too ...The measure and the temp changes drastically which identifies with the theme of the movie .
All said and done ,i feel KR has put up a great effort for this album ,but a bit of good sound mixing ...

did anyone watch the "sirappu kannotam: KudaikkulMazhai" on sunTV saturday night.
I am yet to see the movie or listen to the songs.
Paarthipan spoke about the film and it's music, in the show he said that for him the BGM that Karthikaraaj has provided is the back bone of this film.
During the making of "IVAN" Karthick raaja had done the ochestration and arrangement for the song "appadi paarkurthunna" , hence why Paarthipan signed him on as music director for his film, he commented that Kaarthick raaja was exceptional when it came to ochestral arrangements and hopefully he will go on to more projects on here on onwards. The played the songs, i think "Adiye Kiliye" and the SPB sad song.

I did watch the preview on SunTV, but not fully. I missed the ivan part, but like mumbai ramki says, it surely has Karthik's signature all over. Only thing, the preview confirmed to me was, the sound engineering is really bad. I also, did not care for Parthiban's direction/script etc. I will surely try to watch the movie later when it comes out on DVD.

i think this was discussed earlier but i find that Karthick raja's final product
(the recording/sound quality) differs from film to film, do you think he uses a different sound engineer for different movies ? or is it just the case of the audio company using different audio systems to present the songs.
The songs in Manickam, DUM (3x), Naam iruvar nammakku iruvar and Ragasiyamai all all clear and the balance betweenthe vocal and accomapaniment is perfect, however with scores such as Kadhala Kadhala, Alexander and Kudaikkul Mazhai there is an imbalance. Ofcourse this could very well just be own imagination.
what do you think ? and the theme that they play in the promos for Kudhaikkul mazhai, when they show the snap shots is so epic, fantastic stuff.

As with the recording , everyone's main complaint , I think KR should read this posting to get some constructive criticism. Tend to agree with Listener and ahi , why is it so different , unless he is experimenting. Need to ask KR I guess.
Ramki - Good observations and review.
I think Karthik also arranged and orchestrated "Thedral Vandhu Theendum Pothu" from avatharam, good stuff.
Overall i tend to agree with SK Variety, versatality, and orchestration-- KM tops D3 by leaps and bounds. Karthik has done some excellent stuff. After IR I feel that the only other Inidan composer who uses orchestra in a classy manner.
Oru Kottai song can be enjoyed note to note. A fantastic composition. Very bold to have composed a song like this at this time of the TFM.
The Theme is an anomoly to the album , it does not have one shade of any Indian feel. Just a classic.Top notch.Somebody shoud submeit this to Hollywood producers.
Kudos Karthik Raaja! Hope you come out more like this.

Can anybody provide the musical notes for the melody in the theme.
Thanks in advance.

Regarding recording quality: Yes, KR is still using the same guys IR has been using for long time. As I said before, Pithamagan was mixed/recorded by Yuvan's crew. That was well recorded compared to other IR albums such as Ramana/Friends etc.. They just lack the depth for rhythm based instruments. Just listen to adada from PM, you will understand. May be because of KM is an experimental film, did they have any financial constraint?
About the film: I think it is a fantastic attempt by Partheban. It is very difficult to come up with a film with just two characters. Though it has a few flaws, I was surprised to see this stuff coming from Partheban. This is the best attempt from him so far. His next film is going to be pakka commercial 'pachchai kuthirai'. Yes, as Partheban said, KR's bgm is like a character in this movie. He said that he has succeeded in what he wanted from the cine goers as they come out of the theatre with a confused look on their faces. He told he was expecting that reaction from them. It would take alteast couple of days to realise what was going on if you think about the movie. well, he was right.
I watched Madhan's thirai parvai for KM last week. I was so excited to see the same three points I raised in my movie review were also told by Madhan. Wow, that was like hitting the bulls eye thrice!!!

Nattamai you seem to be in the know, if KR is using the same people as IR, why is it that, IR gets better quality than KR ? The main problem with KR's recording is that the synth drum does not sound good at all. I think he is adding too much 'reverb' to it. If you see Yuvan, he always makes the drums sound so close to you. With KR and in some cases IR's recording, adding 'reverb' to the synth drums to make it sound like natural instruments, seems to make the sound 'fuzzy'.
IMHO, IR and KRs compositions sound better with natural instruments. Though both of them experiment with different synth drum sounds, somehow the ultimate output does not sound great sonically, even though I appreciate the new effects.

BTW, Shyam, oru kOttaikkul song is the song which I do not like at all in the album. I guess taste varies. The backing for the song totally follows the tune this annoys the heck out of me. Even dEva would do a better job, ofcourse, you would have to give him the tune :).
