Mr. Ali, Thanks for your nice explanation.
But one thing I cannot agree, LAta is beyond Comparison. This statement is really not worthy to her.
Afterall she is also a human being. She is not Godess to Singing. Then what do you say about M.S>SubbaLAxmi.
If P.Susheela, have told that she is one among the Mangeshkars it is for her satisfaction.
You go to remote village in Tamil NAdu and play romantic numbers or Ghazals of Lata, ppl won't accept them. They insist you to play the sngs of Janaki or SUsheela. Do you understand. She is also a singer, SJ or AB are also singers.
Ab or SJ are more versatile than Lata. Lata's songs were monotonous as of PS. HEr voice was thin when compared to AB or SJ. She was struggling to reach Higher notes and her voice will become shaky at that time.
same with AB, but SJ's voice can even match the notes of NAdaswaram. wat do u say about this.
SHe might have more chances but, this doesn't mean taht she is the Undisputed queen of INdian Music. It is exagerration.
One comment about her: " HEr heart is as black as her saree is White"
No other singer has got this comment in her period. First, a person should be good at heart.
HEr voice is also simple voice as any other singer has got. She has not got DIVINE VOICE as you say. Can she say "Vishnu Sahasranamam",
IF you say that her voice is Divine, then why did MD chose Anuradha Paudwal to render Gayathri Mantras and OMkaras..? they are also Divine..
What do you say?

Hi Pranav,
I think you are not taking into account the skills that Lata Mangeshkar has or had in her career. Simply saying that her voice was thin or that her songs were motonous is an underestimation to her talent and her qualities. The variety that Lata has sung in is quite profound. If you take into account pathos, happy, bhajans, ghazals, cabaret (yes she has sung cabaret songs), seductive, and plain and simple sweet songs, she has sung them all with ease. Tell me one thing, were all those MD's in the Golden Era of film music crazy to use her voice all the time ?. Shankar Jaikishan who were the rulers of the roost at that time (50's-60's) could easily have dictated terms and used another singer like Suman Kalyanpur (which they did mostly in the 60's) but they ultimately went back to Lata because she had the ability to sing any song.
Her voice was divine, so divine that it moved Nehru to tears when she sung "Aye Mere Watan Ke Logon" at a public venue. Her voice was so divine that Madan Mohan said "when there is Lata, there will be no one else", and SDB had said "as long as Lata's there, i'm safe". Now do you undermine these MD's thinking ?.
Simply saying she could not reach high pitches or saying she has been exaggerated is really a joke and there's no answer to that except to go and hear her songs. The voice or range she had cannot be matched by any singer which is why every artist talks about her so highly. Once again, I think these artists have more knowledge than us when it comes to music so if you want to disagree with them then I say you come up with really intense arguments.
I agree that she has been arrogant at times and that you need a good heart to sing with but leave aside that and look at her talent.
Rafi saab was the optimum of humbleness and anyone who knows about him or has had any personal assocaition with him will always say that he was the most humble singer ever. That is why Lata and him had a dispute over royalties because Rafi never cared for money. He also told RJ to give Yesudas the songs of ChitChor when RJ approached Rafi, because Yesudas was new to the industry...this is how humble he was. And ChitChor proved to be the breakthrough Yesudas needed to make it big into Bollywood. When SPB or Yesudas or anyone talks about their idol Rafi, they always make a point to mention his good nature.
When P.Susheela was trying out in becoming a singer, she only sung Lata's songs. Both SJ and PS feel Lata is the greatest as do the majority of artists in India.
You mentioned about her songs not being played in TN, well that depends on one's taste. Lata's songs are played all around India and that is an undisputable fact. I know of places in Kerala, Andhra, Karnataka and TN where everyone plays her songs because they know the talent she posesses.
Just because AP was given to sing the "Gayatri Manthras" you cannot backfold or take away Lata's work from previous decades. It's not a proper argument to compare AP and LM at all. You're comparing a singer who is divine with a singer who has just sung for about 20 years and has not had that much achievements other than doing cover versions for T-Series and that too with Lata's old songs. I do agree that AB and SJ are also very versatile and they are in a league of their own, but Lata is Lata.
Regards

janaki has no voice control. she sounds like a woman sometimes, like a man some times and like a rat some times. comparing janaki to asha is an insult to asha. so pls stop this comparison

pranav:
I think your statements against Lata's voice being ordinary, monotonous and struggling to reach high notes is unfair. It is so untrue that I wouldnt care to counter any further. You probably havent listened to her devotional and semiclassical songs. She was a BharatRatna in every sense of the term. if you value excellence in singing you will value her voice (during the heydays of course). After all, wasnt it you who called Lata as the Veenai personified!
Raj:
That song doesnt sound German to me! Can you post a link! Thanks a lot, though.

MR. Ali and av,
For your kind infromation, I would Like to tell you,I am not posted anything that degrades Lata's Voice. I only argued that you cannot say Lata is the Ultimate.. Lata has sung only 5-6 cabaret songs. SHe refused to sing them.
I din't say that, she hasn't sung good songs. All her songs are nice.
BUt you told no one can reach her? this is a fault.
Lata says that" Subbalaxmi sings well than me", then you should crown MS Subbalaxmi as SAngeetha Sarasawathi. Lata will never match MSS's voice.
HEr voice is Divine.
Even I too get tears when I hear to "Aye mere Watan", she sings all songs withj expressions. I have not denied that. Even JAnaki, Asha, Anuradah Paudwal also sings wirth full expressions. you cannot denie that.
Lata is Lata, Janaki is Janaki, Asha is Asha
All have their own talents.
They all are great.
you know one thing , in this world, All are equal.
ok
MR. Sam,
Janaki is Woman, if you say that she doesn't have voice control.
Then pls hear "Kadhal Kadidham" from Jodi.
If you say that Lata has vocie control, pls hear the songs of Mujshe dosti karoge and then talk.
Don't be partial in your thinking.

hello everybody,
those who have missed the unity of light of a.r.rahman telecasted in vijay tv are very graet losers.
what a huge crowd and audio system.
really i aws astonished to see the extraordinary performance of s.janakiji!
when janakiamma started with a very shrilling and chilling,"
nenjinilae"..there was a very big applause
and response by the audience.
rahman joined with the chorus of that malayalam prelude........... when she was
singing her 1'st stanza(saranam)...her high pitch voice was very
superb and extraordinary.
even singers like chitra, sujatha, swarnalatha, minmini struggled to go
for high pitch.
but our janakiji's high pitch voice was really very great.
then came "margazhi thingalallavaa"......wow...superb.next was a duet
with spb"ottagathai kattiko".......janakiamma can only do this!
janakiamma is still going steady with her unbeatable melody voice .
really i was excited to hear the great legend's voice with a sweet and sensational mixing at her very age of nearing 70's.
this is highly impossible to all other singers like chitra, swarnalatha, sujatha,
anuradha sriram,harini........ and all other new upcoming singers at their old ages.Even their prolonging for the next 2 years is doubtful...bcoz the current music world is competitive like that.but Janakiamma is doing that!
long live janakiamma and her divine voice!.
