Why aren't IR's albums like Ivann not marketed well...
You don't find them in the US stores... they are also conspicuous by their absence in music websites such as raaga.com and musicindiaonline.
Here's my theory:
Most of IR's albums these days (Ivann, Devan etc.) are released by un-known audio companies like Best Audio and Roja Audio. So, even a quality album like Ivann doesn't get the publicity it deserves. Compare this to AVM's marketing of a mediocre Gemini, and HMV's marketing of Panchathantiram!
Who decides on the audio label? Is it the producer? In which case IR is sheer unlucky I'd say.
Also, when I look at the poll at newtfmpage forum on "Are Ivan's songs a disappointment?", I wonder how many of the respondents outside of India have actually heard the album (they could have only heard 1 minute bits at raajangahm.com)!!! I am sure when any unbiased music lover woulldn't call it a disappointment. I bought the album in Bangalore (all I saw at the store was publicity material for 'Samurai') and I enjoyed the album tremendously.

Anu,
Producers decide the album label. IR after he composes the album, he gives it to the producers, who take it from there....Here is one more tidbit, IR does not also know when the album wud be released not until 7 - 10 days before when he is told by the producer....

Anu,
BTW, I see Ivann album posters in Madras...and Parthipan publicised it well with big posters in the city.
Majority of the people only buy IR albums after songs becomes a hit once the film is released. This was the case with Kasi and Alaghi audio sales.
So wait and see about Ivann cassette sales.

Appadi Paakradunna is the best composition I have come across recently!
Matangi never sounded better before. The interludes are mind-blowing!

Anu,
what do you think of the gusty "Ulagame Nee" number?
My 1st pick of the album is 'Enai Enna Seidhai Veinguzhaley'. Next is 'Appadi PAkradunna Venaam' followed closely by 'Kannan Nee En Isai' followed by 'Ulagame'

Ivan a showpiece of IR's versatility in one album like never before!!!
1)Enai Enna Seithai 2)Enakkinai Yaar Inge 3)Kannan Nee En Isainatha Oviyam :- the uncompromising 'Mogamul' carnatic Ilaiyaraja.
Dhoolu Podu Dhoolu :- unspecified mix of disco/folk dapankuthu ??
1)Paatukku Pogatheenga 2)Bajanai Seiyvom :- Folk Koothu paatu and Bajanai-folk mix !!
Ulakamae ... Nee Manithanai:- 'Malayalam Guru' style use of carnatic with western chorus and orchestration.
Mel Topil Five Staruda :- surprisingly a hint of inspiration from Yuvan/ARR style.
Appadi Paakurathu Venaam :- the masterpiece . In my opinion, a refined Karthik Raja kind of melody that flows effortlessly unlike the strained output of KR.
Though the album maynot be his best, the most encourging aspect of this album is - IR breaking free from his self-imposed barriers and his willingness to experiment with current trends.

Interesting post on Piracy... How we do not like our Mom and Dad to be pirated, lets apply the same policy on the things we buy (incl. casettes)
No wonder why songs are unavailable yet on Raaga, et. al.

ponni..only dhoolu podu reminded me of Karthik rAjA..especially some dum dum dum # i cant remember. Not sure why you think mEl topla is Yuva/ARR style, only the singing is little stylish..otherwise I dont see any similarity.
You are right there is more diversity in this single album, than in multiple albums by other MDs.

"Bad news for his fans: he disappoints severely. Not a single line or snatch of melody stays or haunts. The old touch does not surface except in very distracted, lost patches in some interludes and intros. Sad let-down from a genius."

...."the un compromising carnatic 'mogamull' ilaiyaraja..."
nice string of words ponni :-). What a sweet treat of pure carnatic music from IR in IVANN, that too in soothing SUDHA's charming voice :-). Loved all the songs, though the three songs by Sudha were outstanding..

Raji:
Sorry, didnt notice this thread's archives.
But again, the same newtfmpage 'patrons' have heavily sided Suchitra of TMM fame when she tears apart ARR's albums...saying how intelligent and knowledgeable TMM's reviews are...just take a look at the archives when ARR's albums are being discussed...ARR fans used to say the same thing...that they dont think much of TMM's reviews...! So now its become 'We dont care what she says...'!! Interesting.

We don't care what Sujita reviews on IR, you see for 12 dog years we know more IR music than sujitha or fa'jitha
but we take special care to credit sujitha when ARR is reviewed..,.this is our judgement.

IVAN review & Suchitra lata..Its amazing how she cud write a review even before she got even the raga usage correct. Pathetic.

To be very frank; i purchased this album yesterday with high expectations! I don't feel sad for waisting 50 bugs; but really sad to hear "below average stuff" from the great meastro himself!
There is nothing special abt any of those songs...some songs are purely carnatic..others are really miserable...
Hey maestro! what's happening to you?

Ivann is the best among the recent albums. Nice work by the great Maestro! Ennai enna seithaai is amazing. Kannan nee en and appadi paakrathunnaa are mesmerising! MEl top-ula, dhoolu podu thoolu are good. And all the bit songs are nice. In total, it's a worth buying album and double worth listening!
