RP, I think so. I am just going by his works in TFM. There was a movie I saw in the mid-seventies when I was a kid, "Daagam" or something like that.GD was the MD and it had some great songs like "Vaanam namathu (koyil?)", "oLi vidum veLayilum nalla oLi tharum mezhugu thiri". The first song sounds like Atana,if so that would become the probably the 3rd song in TFM (to my knowledge) based on "Atana" after "varugiraar unnaithedi" and "Yaar tharuvaar intha ariyaasanam".Interestingly, TKR composed some small songs (probably 4 liners) in Atana in "Marakka Mudiyuma".
The second song I referred to is based on Sahana. There were shades of Sahana in MSV/TKR's in the abridged version of Gita composed by KD esp. in the lines "KaNNan manathu kal manathendro..." and
"Kolbavan KaNNan". But most compositions in Sahana in TFM have been predictable, they would have nearly the same tune with just different metres or santhams. Eg :- The song "oLi vidum..." sounds exactly like "ENgo piranathavaraam engo vaLarnthavaraam" (MD:S Balachander) in the movie "Bommai". This sounds similar to "ENNam ellaam ore idathaye naaduthe" sung by TMS. "Aadi naathan ketkindraan" sung by TMS,SJ is another "Sahana" song. But the MD who give it a different feel was KVM in "Paarthen sirithen".

RP, another Bhairavi piece I can think of is "Oru puram paarthaal mithilayin maithili" in the song "Athisaya raagam" composed by MSV.

Sriram:
Thanks. Although I know nothing about Sahana, I
have noticed a lot of similarities in the songs,
engO piRandhavaLaam and indha veeNaikku
theriyaadhu of Rayil Sneham, which is also a
Sahana number.
Is there any Bairavi song by MSV/TKR or KVM? I
remember someone telling me a long time ago that
there is a nice PBS song in Bairavi.

Guys,
Just today I discovered a P.Suseela classic, "Naanae Varuvaen"(the sad version) from "Yaar Nee" MDed by Veda. I would love a discussion on ragam, source for the song, etc.
Anybody who hasn't heard this song, believe me it's a must-hear,must-possess tune.

Udhaya,
I do not remember hearing the sad version though I saw the movie.
The original tune is the great Madan Mohan's, from the movie "Woh Kaun Thi". The pallavi is "Naina barse rim jhim rim jhim". I am not able to make out the raag off-hand but give me a day and I will revert to you. Interestingly, the interludes of the Hindi original were used by Veda in his original composition "Vaa arugil vaa" (sung by PS) from the movie "Athe kaNgaL".
FYI, Madan Mohan is one of the several great composers in Hindi, whose expertise was confined to composing and not selling, the main reason why his compositions do not have the mass appeal but second to none in terms of quality. "Woh Kaun Thi" was , I think, the first silver jubilee hit in his then 15 year old career. He expired in '74 leaving behind a great many melodies to savour. All the other songs in this movie were lifted and "pasted" in Yaar nee like "Paarvai ondre pothume","Un MaLigayil" etc.
Veda, for all his lifts had quite a few superb numbers to his credit like the songs of "Paarthiban Kanavu". I have heard a superb number sung by PBS "Iravin Madiyil ulagam urangum", composed by Veda. "Vaa arugil vaa" is also a good number.

Sriram,
Thanks a bunch for the info. I haven't been here in a while. I went back and read some great posts. Nice to know that there's another safe corner for nostalgic, music loving souls.

Udhaya, you are welcome. Actually, your query triggered off memories of songs with the eerie/disturbing effect, though I love the tunes for what they are.
Some of them for your mind to rejoice over.
1.KaN paarkum paarvayile (Nadu iravil) MD: SBalachander
2.Azhage Vaa (Aandavan KattaLai) MD : MSV/TKR
3.Nenjam marappathillai (-Same-) MD : MSV/TKR
Just some thoughts, Song no.3 had lovely Saranga pieces in its interludes. Interesting to note that MSV/TKR used saranga in some 'light' songs like "Thoothu sella oru thozhi" from "Pachai ViLakku" in the interludes. Even in a westerized number like "Yaar antha nilavu", you had saranga in the first interlude.
It is unfortunate that S Balachander's towards TFM did not extend his own off-beat movies. His works in "Bommai", "Nadu Iravil" figure among my favourites. MY favourites in Bommai are
Neethan Ulagam (PS)
Engo piranthavaram (PS)
Any info on his other works in TFM ?

Hi! There's just one version of Naane Varuven in Yaar Nee.
Udhaya, you may want to hear "Pon Meni Thazhuvaamal" by PS from the same movie: ultimate voice!

Udhaya, tried playing the song on my keyboard and it set to "Cinema Raagam", that is no specific raagam. If the scale I had chosen to play the song was right, the pallavi is predominantly "Hanumathodi" (Bhairavi in Hindustani which was used quite often in old HFM). The Charanam starts off with D2 (which is not present in H.Thodi) and therefore sounds very different, though excellent. I am sure, like several compositions of MM, this too must have been a spontaneous creation. Have you heard "Mannan thiru meni magarani thoongum malar manjamo" from Subathinam ? (MD :KVM) (sung by Balamurali and PS). This was lifted from MM's "Woh Chup rahe" sung by Lata, a brilliant tune.
BTW, how many movies has TMS scored music for ? His compositions I have heard are
Naan KaduvaLai kanden oru Kuzhanthai vadivile
Kai viralil piranthathu naadham
Anbe amutha ...
I love all the three tunes and what to say about the great TMS's singing !!!

Sriram and Veda fans :)
Paarvai Ondre Podhume was sung well by TMS-the original by Asha was outstanding -the saxophone ..aaahhh..
Do you the know the original of Ammamma Kannathil Kannam vaithukollu - Vallavan Oruvan(?) - one of LRE's best (IMO). True, Veda even though he copied a lot-has left behind unforgettable tunes in TFM.

Raja,
I too love "Ammamma.." and hope it is not a lift.
BTW, shall we discuss songs from P.kanavu ?
My favourite is "Uthaya vaanin ithaya nilave" sung by AMR and PS closely followed by "KaNNale naan kaNda kaName".
I really long for those days were the base melody was laid out first and the instruments decorated the tune.
I was listening to "Thesulavuthe ...." sung by Ghantasala and PS from the movie "MaNalane Mangayin baaggiyam" (composed by Adi Narayan Rao) the other day. Boy!! four stanzas, all with different tunes and great singing by the two. The Hindi remake "Kuhoo Kuhoo Bole koyaliya" by Rafi and Lata paled in comparison. When it comes to PURE Hindustani songs with a lot of those taans and "rolling", Ghantasala is head and shoulders above any IFM singer. The Telugu version of "Shiva Shankari" is a great example. He showed a strong leaning towards Hindustani Raags, I am going by some of his compositions in Telugu. One of my pals said that Ustaad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan used to stay at this house during his visits to Madras.

Sriram:
Manavane Azhalama (KRVijaya from Karpagam?) is one more eerie song. PS as usual has elevated the song :)). Naalai Indha velai (Uyarndha Mandidhan) is one more - no end to her greats :)
I havent heard much of Ghantasala's songs -Are you referring to Parthiban Kanavu- and can you write out some more of the lyrics and all the songs from the film ?
Your mention of Hindustani Classical reminds me of Bhimsen Joshi and Mannadey from Baiju Bawra -(Keythaki Gulaab..) Mannadey just was left hanging - what are your views ?
- From: Sriram Lakshman (@ ifmxlenx.na.informix.com)
on: Mon May 10 15:40:04 EDT 1999
Raja,
Keythaki Gulab is not from "Baiju Bawra", think it is from "Basant Bahar" (MD: Shankar Jaikishan). The song you are referring to, could be "Aaj Gawath man" sung by Pt.Paluskar and Ustaad Amir Khan (the contest between Baiju and Tansen).
I have to listen to the song again to air my views. Talking about Ustaad's singing HFM, please listen to "Jogan ban Jayen" by Bade Ghulam Ali Khan in the movie "Mughal-E-Azam" (MD :Naushad Ali).
Ghantasala is great composer/singer and was dominant in Telugu film music industry from '48 to '73 (till his death) after which SPB took over. He is supposed to have recommended SPB to several MDs. Do you remember his "Rajasekhara yenmel" from "Anarkali" with Jikki ? A truly brilliant number by Adi Narayana Rao again. To me, none of the present day Tamil composers are capable of such compositions.

Sriram :
You are correct. The movie was Basanth Bahar. Bade Ghulam Ali Khan and Ustaad Amir Khan are very high on most HCM fans.
I dont remember the Anarkali song. Was Ghantasala the singer for songs from Devadas? (Nageshwara Rao version)
