I guess ‘k’ would certainly be annoyed to see how his posting got into a sort of red herring ! His question was what is the future for our Indian percussion instruments in the present scenario. I must have read between the lines, but anyway it has led to a different discussion.
The issue is not whether it is good if you create a melody and then a harmony or the vice-versa. It is how one conceives either. Doesn’t mean than one is better than the other and one could always conceptualize either way. ( I still do watch the movie ‘Idhayam’ just for the back ground music, which is so rich and evocative of the feelings of the lover who cannot express himself).
Most of the modern music (present Tamil cine music, for certain) tends to conceptualize on certain mechanized or habitual patterns consciously or unconsciously. That was my grudge. Even an ‘alaap’ is different in different artists because of this factor.

I dont understand why suffer so much taking pains making your music sound like real in KB, when you have alternatives.... "
You are talking an ideal theory., but in the practical world where time and money is the key, we need to think about a practical solution based on the investment. Why should i go in Search of Ghee when i have the butter in hand, if I can play it myself i am done,90 out 100 times it works :)
Seriously I dont see any limitation on the keyboards, might be for a change we can use natural instruments however using natural instrument does not make my music the best in the world. If it is best, it would get there even on the keyboards,.
btw:how is gamakam real in guitar when you say pitch bend is fake on keyboards??
any way we can discuss it someother time,
I am just against opinions when people treat a keyboard as an gadget that works by itself.
Leave the playing part, the simple triton interface will make people realize how hard it is to use keyboards. :)
"Musicians" keep them coming do not bother about instruments or sounds etc.

Oh Gosh! Am I fighting here.....hoooooooo
But Davinci I thought you meant thats the issue....see you are backing off...you said the music is monotonous because you made music from a preconceived structure Rhythm to melody..may be Ur right..I also saw you making the same point weeks before in commenting to one song from Aditya...so I dont understand your point...
but I am gonna go with Srik and take these discussions offline...Srik thanks...
BTW RHENUKA if you are reading this dont back off...this groups welcomes new artistes and they make you better.....
Thanks
Back to Business...

Da Vinci, I would like to listen if you have worked on any composition that will demonstrate your good ideas...

Folks ..no no..I do think people here are doing very well. It is not at all boring. Even Renuka who makes a point to be humble, for her college assignment, did a wonderful job, in using various loops in her music. Maybe, many of us here are programmers and we immediately clue in on the theory and start creating the melodies. But I guess most people have to play stuff on an instrument..music is like sports..mind ..body coordination (keyboarding is one too) so when you strum or beat the drum your body feels exhilirating..But some people can calmly play things on the keyboard or piano or I am told IlaiyarAja writes down things directy to paper..So, I dont care whether you are using keyboard or natural instruments, as long as people creating this are happy doing it, because it shows in their music and it inspires them to play more and innovate more.
Coming back to my point, whats going to happen to Indian percussion ? Can't we add just more instruments along with percussion to get more 'body' to the music. I feel, once we stop using indian percussion a major part of the 'indianness' of our music will be lost..yes.yes..I know art/creativity/freedom etc.. I respect it..but I am getting older..and seem to be getting concerned about these sort of frivolous things :)

Divakar,
Well, I wasnt 'arguing' and so I didnt 'back up' either :). Music could be monotonous when it has one of its constituents mechanically structured, and in our times, because of the kind of sounds we are exposed to, it is more disposed towards certain fixed percussion patterns. Thats what I meant.
Aditya,
Well, I am a guitarist, who can manage to play a key board. I used to play for AIR when I was at College with some juvenile compositions. I made some attempts at recording a few for a local radio station here but I am acutely embarassed by my lack of expertise in recording techniques, nor do I have the sufficient gadgets for it. Till recently, I only had a Casio key board and it took me a long time to figure out that I cannot reproduce the MIDI sounds of percussion in it ! I have acquired a Yamaha PSR 540 and I hope I will create something good soon with it which I can place for public viewing.
In fact, you have heard me and made a comment too, if I remember it right !

K, thanks for the tonic sir , very good point
as long as people creating this are happy doing it, because it shows in their music and it inspires them to play more and innovate more.
-- I will frame this and put in my studio.:)
Whats going to happen to Indian percussion ?
-- I am working here with few western producers,
I have a roland handsonic for indian percussion. This contains many indian percusssion you have mentioned, it produces 100% orginal tone when played (you need to play it not program it) by a trained percussion artist. Western producers these days look for ethnic sounds, this comes handy they like these tones.
so you fear of indian percussion vanishing soon will not happen, infact it is growing.
(The song kana kanden thozi from parthiban kanavu totally has handsonic for ghatam.)

Srikanth, your western producers, do they like just those ethnic tones or even the indian rhythmic patterns also? You're showing a ray of hope to the future...

"K' and everybody,
here is a melody on an Indian percussion tabla and you can find subtle sounds of Ghatam as well....obviously the melody was written by me long back and I added the Percussion later...this wasnt programmed and I am no Tabla player either so you may find at some places a little difficulty playing the keys.....
I could definitely improve upon this.....
here it goes...the file name is Tabla FLute

Hi Every body it's a nice and strong arguments. I think I can learn a lot from all of you.thanks for your appreciation "K".In my college work I also tried with Indian Percusionns Mridangam and Tavil.Just get the sound and Sample them and make them as aPiece of music. But I think I haven't use it in a proper way and melody is really a part of this piece and the mixing is very bad(You can't hear the melody properly). Thatswhy I didn't give the file name. But I tried to use some Indian Percussion, but I didn't use them well. But definetely I will learn more with all of your help and support. Here the sample is

Aditya..good question. I would be keen to hear what Sriks tells us. My guess is, the acceptance will not be that great. Different cultures are more amenable to melodies from other cultures than the beats. Even we did not accept the drum kit whole heartedly. Earlier, lots of film songs had drums in pallavi or interludes alone. It was also used along with indian percussion. Sometimes, I feel they played the indian patterns on these.
Divakar ..the tabla accompaniment sounds very good. Can you try Candrika with tabla ?
Sriks ..I checked out Handsonic on the web.It is very interesting. Even the drum pads used in Swapthaswarangal do not seem to be pressure sensitive. Yes..playing is much better than programming I think, it seems to be more natural..maybe I am imagining.

k, liten to this, played using handsonic. i did similar stuff for them, handsonic is simply cool.
Programming works good for drum or percussion,
(depends on what you call as programming)
however playing is best when compared, what ever be the instrument.
In this track 100% played live....
