bb: Looks like no takers for this song in 'bizzare Tahamizh'. This only confirms my earlier statement: 'most of the participants are in the late twenties or early thirties'. Except the teenager SP! Cheers!

bb, I’m unable to listen to the song. Can you check the link?
Good choice, though!
Bhanumathi brings out the anguish of being childless so feelingly in her song. Many singers have, over the years, sung songs that portrayed this anguish – TS Bagavathi while singing the line ‘Petrorae selvangal petraar, oru pillai ilaar enna petraar’ moves the listener to tears (‘Kannodu vin pesum jaadai’- Kavalai Illadha Manithan). Other songs expressing similar thoughts are ‘Illatha pillaikku naan enna solli thalaatta( Soolamangalam Rajalakshmi in Appa Tata), ‘Nee punniyam seithaval thozhi’ (VJ in Punniyam Seithaval), ‘Enakku neeyum unakku naanum’ (PS in Thaali Dhaanam), ‘Kanna unakku enna kurai’ (SJ in Poo Pootha Nandavanam), ‘Ezhuthugiren oru kaditham’( KSC & Anuradha Sriram in Kalki)—
Kannadasan sparkles, as usual- the lines ‘Kaaikkadha marathadiyil thaenaaru paayudhada, kanindhu vitta chinna maram kanneeril aadudhada’ and ‘Pettredukka manam irundhum pillai kani illai; pettredutha mara kilaikku matra sugam illai’ bring home the irony so well. Interestingly, years later, Kannadasan expressed the same thoughts, but employing completely different analogies so fetchingly- ‘Kottai kattum rajavukku pillai illaiyaam, kuppai thotti mattum oru pillai eendrathaam’ ( ‘Yaaro neeyum naanum yaaro’- Pattakkathi Bhairavan- 1979)
Bhanumathi stamps her class all over the song, and the fact that she was singing for herself added to its appeal (she won the National award for Best Actress for her performance in Annai, I believe). Both Bhanumathi and Sowcar Janaki performed their roles with understanding and SV Ranga Rao was his usual breezy casual self.
AVM Productions’ Annai-1962 was directed by Krishnan-Panju and also had Sachu, Nagesh, Chandrababu, Muthiah and others in its cast. The son was played by a new actor, and his non-performance came in for flak in all the reviews. In fact after the film ran for 100days, SS Vasan happened to watch it. It said that he called up AVM and asked him ‘Do you know why the film ran for 100 days’? AVM is said to have suggested various factors like Bhanumath and Sowcar’s performances, the moving story, good songs etc—SSV rejected all these and said “That new boy’s performance. Had it not been for him, the film would have crossed even 200 days!”
The beginning of the 60s saw the fall of R Sudarsanam as the Official MD of AVM Productions. Paarthal Pasi Theerum-1962 went to MSV-TKR. After Annai, the only film that RS composed for AVM was Naanum Oru Penn-1963. AVM Chettiar didn’t have the heart to ask his old friend to leave, and so is said to have told him to continue coming to the Studios at half the monthly salary he was currently drawing. RS refused the offer and came out. He did compose some good songs for a few films later, though- the best of those albums being Poompuhar-1964, Karthigai Deepam and Anbukkarangal- both 1965.
Annai had several good songs, besides the SOTD:
Budhiyulla manitharellaam- Chandrababu
Azhagiya Mithilai nagarinilae- PBS & PS
O bak bak bak bak- PS
Annai enbaval nee thaana- Bhanumathi
Orae oru oorilae- TMS, ALR & LRE
Lyrics for all the songs were by Kannadasan, save the last one that is a fantastic parody of various popular songs of the time, penned by Kothamangalam Subbu. Interestingly TMS sings for Chandrababu in the song, while ALR sings for Nagesh.

The new boy's name was Raja.(Kadalora Kavidhai was Raja 2 with the same effect)
Poovagi Kayagi -A good song where a more professional singer like Jamuna Rani/Leela (to suit BM on screen) would have done more justice to the great lines of KD.BM's image on & Off screen image & her voice does not gel well with the pain attached to this song.
(after listening to TS Bagavthy even she could have made justice)
On RS I too feel he had atleast 3-4 years of prime music left.Anbu karangal-I enjoy the tune of the charanams of Azahgenna for its M2 usage, the whole songs of Onna irukka and Iravu.
....
....
BTW what is the name of the Prabhu movie?
My dear martyrdom?

Song of the Day: unadhE iLa maalaip pozhudhu from thEneer.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/unathe.rm
- Saravanan writes:
'Unathae iLa maalaippozhuthu’ from the unreleased film Thaeneer. Sung by KJY. Music by Gangai Amaran. Lyrics by Pulavar Chokkar.
Vaigarai Films’ Thaeneer never came out of the cans. It was supposed to be based on the plight of the Tea Estate laborers, with a strong communist undercurrent.
I have been hunting for this song for many years and finally found it this time when I went on vacation. The record shows Bhagyaraj and Jyothi, the latter dressed in the traditional tea-picker’s attire. It was a HMV Record and the year of manufacture was mentioned as 1980. The film’s director was Jayabharathy.
Besides the SOTD, other songs in the film were:
Adi padavum- TL Maharjan & VJ. Lyrics: Thanigai Selvan
Ennavo seidhi- JC & SJ. Lyrics: Semmalar Selvan
Vegu kaalam ingu- MV & Poorani. Lyrics: Thanigai Selvan
This bewitching song used to feature ever so often as part of Radio Ceylon’s Mandha Maarutham programme in the evenings in the early 80s. KJY weaves magic with his dreamy mellow interpretation, as the song ushers in the beauty of the evening in the hills, with the sylvan trees swaying in the balmy breeze, the brook bubbling along placidly and the sky painted in brilliant hues, while the heart is athirst with unfulfilled love, and waits anxiously to see it succeed--
GA’s yet another gem—a gem that was never displayed, never sold, never donned, and never admired--
- MS, this rare KJY song is for you. Enjoy your birthday!

It is difficult to associate a song like this to the man.A wonderful song and beautifully sung by KJY.GA can see his enemy only in the mirror.
A favourite song mentioned to Ceylon2 by all the Tamil Selvis,Then Mozhis ,Santhis from the southern part of TN of the 80s, awaiting their Rajakumarans after passing out 10th std.

Bb: I thot not writing, but not able to avoid. Neenga avasarama saravanukku defend pannenga. Fine. The reason is known. without his writeups this thread will become weak. But as moderator with neutral, you sould hv slamed OISg also for his dirty writing. Not only this calling some1 'dog', but many in past, he writes garbage as if he writes after thanni. In every post, he irritate someone unnecesarily. either public figure or anther poster. Right from banumathi to IR to mohan to any other people. Moreover, half of his post will not be understandable. but he criticse others. kevalam.
If he call other posters as dogs, what is he? Can we call him as TP (street garbage collector)? He should try to behave himself. A caution.

Mr. swami, relax. I dont think anybody here ever takes OISG's posts as strong words, those were just harmless comments passed in jest. A light-hearted look at the the quirky mannerisms and peculiarities present in artists.
And Saravanan doesnt really need any defending as such. It is very easy for a statistician to elevate some and besmirch others - just a clever use of adjectives here and there and that's it! However he has never stooped to that and is incapable of slandering anyone.
Dont read too much between the lines.

This song can defend the common accusation that GA copied IR. A mood song which portrays the effect of an autumn evening. Iam able to hum the entire tune of this song(I must have heard it 20 years ago and SOTD is not anyway within my reach)
