this forum is for tfm. no harm in putting views on hfm. but we should not deviate much.
PS is a good singer. So many people like her voice and love the songs sung by her. If you like her voice, please write something good about it.
Since Janaki sings well, how do you people beleive Suseela is not singing well yaar?
But there is no use of telling here. Here people likes the MD than the music. And also hates the music of another MD than that MD.

The highlighting point is PS in 1960s,70s,80s sounded absolutely melodious. She in her hey days was second to none because of her very original, clear voice.I still remember many of my north Indian friends asking me whose voice, whose voice....
Well she was heard last only in early 90s...
Muthumanimalai and Kannukku mai alagu and these songs she rendered when she was sixty years of age...LATA IN her 60th year had GHOST voice.
Yes Shiva today's Suseela or for that matter Suseela can not please SJ's admirers....TNS

Guys....please leave Lata out of all this. She started singing in '47 and till you have listened to all that she has offered from that period till the point she started turning 'sadistic', you will never be able to appreciate the extent to which she has been instrumental in defining various facets of playback singing, not bettered till date. Leave her alone !!!! Futhermore, stay withing the TFM ambit.

Dear readers,
Dont say that Lata has a ghost voice now that she has crossed her sixties. You people have not heard the heavenly songs of Lekin. The song 'Yaar sili sili' demands a range greater than 3 octaves.
The classical pieces like 'Kesariya' and 'suniyo ji aaraj' require trmendous flexibility of the vocal chords. Listen to the songs of Rudaali. It has 'Dil hum hum kare'. I heard that Bhupen Hazarika waited for 6 months for Lata to come and record the song. And dont forget the soul-stirring 'Paani Paani re' from Maachis, and another such song from Godmother. In fact, she still sings her classic 'Vande Mataram' from AnandMath during all her concerts. During the Pune National Games, which were held around 1994 (she was 64 then), she ssang a wonderful song
'Aakash ke us paar bhi...'.
P susheela, S janaki are GREAT singers. But Lata
is divine , much sweeter & with a speedier voice. No wonder she is the nightingale of INdia. In a recent interiew, P Susheela herself admitted that she did not make it much up north because of Lata's heavenly voice. It is so heartening to know that Lata has got the Bharat Ratna.
If you dont agree with me, listen to the songs of the Telugu film 'Suvarna Sundari'. P Susheela rendered all songs here. There was a Hindi remake where Lata sang all the songs. All the songs have same tune, even similar words due to the extensive use of Sanskrit. All are classical based. But Lata's 'taans' sound more invigorating than Sushila's. Lata is also much sweeter.

ONE side listen to Mannavan Vandhanadi or Maraindhirundhe Parkkum...OTHER side listen to Mella Mella Ennai thottu or DIL DIL Manadhil or THULI thuli Mazhai Thli....Listener will think these are two or three different singers....That is PS's speciality....30 years she literally gave every thing Best to TFM....PS SOLOS are always remebered as Suseela's SONGS....Where AS S.jANAKI,S major hits are reffered as Ilaiya Raaja's songs.....TNS

SuriIyengar,
"And u wont find anyone so easily switching b/w
low notes to highest without commiting harakiri"
- Given the range of Lata's voice, it's no wonder that she could do this switching easily. I have read interviews where Lata herself has said "I cannot sing in low pitch". But that does not matter. It's not her forte since her voice is at its best when she sings in high pitch. And that's why almost all Lata's songs are high pitched. Naturaly women's voices are high pitched. And when they - I mean singers - sing in an even higher pitch they sound sweeter. SJ can sing in a pitch as high as Lata, but she will sound so shrill that you may not want to hear. But that's where Lata conquers. In the same way, P Susheela's voice is at her best when she sings in a moderate pitch. But her voice is ultimately sweet. I have never heard a singer who can sing in such low pitches and yet sound so sweet! That's her forte. And that's why almost all of her songs are placed in a medium pitch - with occasional soaring notes. They both were queens in their own genre.
People of North India would not have heard much of P Susheela's songs to appreciate her voice. But, hindi songs being aired all over India, that's definitely a clear advantage for tremendous popularity rise for Hindi singers. And Lata deserved it. So does Susheela. But, fortunately for us, she happened in the TFM. You cannot deny this aspect in the Indian Film industry. How many people in North India, do you think, know Sivaji Ganesan? For that matter, how many people even in South India know Sivaji? (I am not sure if you will accept Sivaji as a great actor, that's a totally different thing!)
Vijay,
It's true that Susheela cannot sing like Lata. All the same, it's true that Lata cannot sing like Susheela. For a sample (because there can't be many instances of same songs being sung in both languages) hear the songs of "Naanum Oru PeNN" in Hindi, especially "KaNNa Karumai Nira KaNNa". Susheela wins easily.
So, you see, we can never compare these singers on the whole to label one is better than the other. Lata's is the most powerful and "sopranO" voice. Susheela's the sweetest voice with ultimate clarity. Which one is better is a matter of very personal choice - especially, that depends on what songs, music and kind of voice one grows up listening to!
SL,
"Lata has been instrumental in defining various facets of playback singing, not bettered till date" - explanation needed please!
Your use of the phrase "not bettered till date" - I don't think it's wise of you to pass a remark like this. Have you forgotten the golden voice of Susheela, just for a handful of samples, in "Vasantha Kaalam VarumO" or "ENNap Paravai" or in "NaaLaam NaaLaam" or for that matter, the songs of KarNan? Come on, be just yaar.

Karthi,I have heard all those songs and more and my opinion remains the same . I can list songs of Lata in which the standards of singing have not been equalled by any living mortal and I do not consider anybody to have posessed the capability to do so. Do you actually mean to say that PS has surpassed Lata ? If so, the last sentence of your post applies better to you:))

Karthi, furthermore, your reactions are a result of your loyalty to PS rather than any desire to find out the truth. If I were you, I would try and find out what percentage of Lata songs I have been exposed to and set about aquiring them as opposed to indulging in 'knee-jerk' partisanship. You would then know that PS is not being humble when she states that Lata is her mAnaseega guru.

Hey Guys!
Time to stop comparisons. The thread is not discussed. I do not think that one need to compare PS and establish her supermacy. We shall restrict the discussion to TFM and look forward to a healthy dialogue.
Both PS and Lata are mutual admirers. They are sigarangal and beyond comparison.
PS kuralai kEttu brahmithu pOnAne endraar Latha.
Latha en maanasiga guru. Naan avagaluidaiya sagothari endraar Susheela.
Though it is true that PS has not got the due credit, it is just because of the regional languages in which she reigned supreme.
The very fact that so much of discussions are going on the Isaiarasi is ample proof of the thread title.
Isaiarasi ennaalum neeyE, unakoru inai aaguma...

Oh come on SL,
For you to judge (the singing of) a singer, you don't have to have listened to all of his/her songs. What percentage of listening would you claim to be acceptable? 100%? 90%? Though I may not have listened to Lata as widely or frequently as you, I have certainly heard a lot of her good and great songs. If there's a quality in Suseela's voice that is not bettered by any other singer, then it's her voice itself. The sweetness of her voice.
Suseela's voice is the best voice in the whole world. There's no mortal that has born or going to be born with a voice like hers.
"Malaith ThEn inikkidhunnu solla ulagathula irukkira thEnkoodai ellam udaichu, naakkula thadavip paarkkaNum-gira avasiyam illai. Idhu puriyum-nu ninakkirEn!"
FYI, please know that Suseela doesn't have to equal or surpass Lata. (Lata may be her "maangaseega guru"! But, "Guruvai minjiya sishyai or rasigai" irukkak koodaadhaa enna? This is only for an argument that you have started). She has her own class which will be unique for ever and ever.
Your reasoning about my loyalty to PS was a nice rib-tickler, though! Why would I have to be loyal to PS or any other singer for that matter? Non-sense.

Why Karthi alone is loyalist of Suseela...Most of our parents are PS loyalist .If we take them to cassette shop the first cassette they pick up is one of Suseela old hits..Like Ponmani Vairamuthu says ULAGIL ulla athanai tamilargalin (THOSE ABOVE 35 YEARS OLD) vottu em SUSEELAVUKKE....
This is because she had the World's BEST voice....TNS

Karthi, there is however one aspect of playback singing that PS beats Lata hollow in. Lata could not modulate her voice to suit Vyjayanthimala, Waheeda Rehman, Madhubala as well as PS could, for KR Vijaya, Savitri and sometimes even for Ashokan and Nambiar :))))
Karthi, nee TNS engira pErla vEra IP addres-la irunthu post paNNa enakku theriyAmalA pOgum ?
