I listened to Mugangal last night.
The album shows sincerity and passion from all musicians.
I liked Sanchalam of all the songs. Initially, I felt that there were two independent people who worked on the songs. One - Who did the tune, the other who did the music. For some reason, I felt that the music and the vocals did not fit. Then I realized that it was the singer. I felt that the lead singer Anita sounded the same in all the songs though she has put in a lot of effort. Somethign montonous in her singing. I am not able to pinpoint. The musical arrangement is path-breaking. I am writing the review after 12 hours. But still remember Sanchalam, Pidivadham and Thunichal though I listened to the song only once.
I completely agree with Kiru. Listeners have to feel that Singer is expressing her own experience. No matter what music is done, Singer carries the song. I had this personal experience when I recorded my song 'Singaara Velaa'. The lyrics were written by my mother and music was composed by me. I recorded the song with my friend rendering vocals. Listeners felt that the song lacked the soul. They like my rendering though I hardly qualify to be singer.
Mugangal sounds a very intellectual effort than a soulful effort. And that is the drawback of the album.
As AR Rahman once said, an artist should have experienced pain/sorrow at some point in his life. Otherwise, his output will sound plastic. Why do you think?

Ramesh,
Please get RJAY to comment to on your music. I have never seen anybody giving feedback that will help the composer. He has good writing skills and can articulate his thoughts very well.

seems i am missing fun here!...
Mahesh/Ramesh and the team: really a nice album, 80% of the time when musicans work on a private album - there is an element called "honest effort", this is one such album. My ears clearly identifies this effort. Good going guys!, I also wish that Y(o)ur dream of breaking film and music apart works out back home!. As of today seriously this is only way for music to grow.
and a big HI to all, I am too busy at work hence very limited particiapation, however I read all your postings!....and our good friend "UV" is yet to get a keyboard , get if man! go for it:)

Guys
ESP KIRU,ESHWAR,ADITYA you guys gonna love this link, there was a fusion effort done between carnatic artist and Eurpeon(Belgium) classical artist here is the link where you can hear the samples its mind blowing, the cd is called 'Crosswinds'
both my friends Karthik and Divakar played Ghatam and kanchira respectively.
My pick of the album is Sri Ganapathim where there is interesting duet between violin and Veena
whats interesting is usually western classical violin fingering is totally different from carnatic style, seeing those guys churning out gamkams effortlessly is amazing.
And another song is 'Deepak'
anyway without furthur adue here is link enjoy

UV,
Dont confuse me with aruLaracan, a good friend of mine. He is a much more knowledgeable guy (I mean it..no smileys here). I am just an opinionated person. I will listen to the album you have suggested over the weekend.
Sridhar..I agree with Rahman's observation. Trials and tribulations makes us mature, if we address them properly. This will add enough profoundness to our creative output.
(Ramesh..though you do look like your brother..not only you can sing ..you beat him out on having a bigger moustache :) I will email rajesh.)

Very nice effort by Mugangal from what one could hear from the clips. Of course, you can appreciate more after listening to complete album (with lyrics).
Like Sridhar points out, I find "soul" missing. The (female) singer can put a little more emotion - now it sounds a little monotonous. (I kind of get the feeling that I am listening to tamil songs for children - the melodies so strict and so simple). However, musically theres a very honest effort put into fusing carnatic and western - I could only suggest melodies be a little "free". They sound "flat" now...like theres no high points or low points. Maybe I am not a good articulator like RJay, so its best listening to him!
Sridhar how are you? I saw your father at my wedding. He intoduced himself "sridhar's father"..
Srikanth, long time no hear! Hope u are doing well!

Thanks UV and Sridhar. I got married in June. My wife listens/apreciates music, but she does not sing/play. I taught her Happy Birthday..she plays melody while I accompany her with second part. Shes learning...
Ramesh, looking forward to. I rarely listen to lyrics!! I will comment on music alone if thats ok.
