I'm a new visitor to this website. I couldn't see anyone discussing about Vani Jayaram's songs.
Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

Hi KIK
Solwa Saal Solwa Sawan...you know how the mind works with these similiarities...but yeah, I was thinking of Solwa Sawan....(but I did mentioned Sridevi...that should have been a tip off in the right direction) Ha.
Anyway, no the Jaidev tune was an original. And it was quite well done by VJ (She, of course, also sang all the SAME songs for Seethakokachilaka IAlaigal Oyvathillai another Bharatiraja film )..all the tamil orignials by SJ, the remake oringinals by VJ)
The Senthurapoove song was Pee Kahan in SS. I don't know where you might find a soundtrack of that film as it bombed big-time at the box-office. But the tunes were good - VJ and KJY. That's a good combination even in Hindi!
Jaidev is such an original - he wouldn't dream of plagarism in his dreams,I am sure. Check out the album if you can get your hands on it....(and if you do - tell me - I want a copy!!)

Hi again,
Have you heard the SJ-VJ versions of the same song in one movie....Kaatrinile Varum Geetham.....Kandaen Yengum Poomagal Natiyam....
Now there's a good point of comparison!
I have both versions on tape. Amazing how different the styles are - how different the enitre mood and effect of the same tune - two different voices - and how the lyrics (although verbatim) seem to change!

So naaz, u mean IR copied Jaidev's tunes !!!!
BTW - digression.
I was listening to the songs of a Tamil movie "Yaar Nee" - mostly sung by PS. And good heavens, EVERY song is copied from Madan MOhan's Adalat and his Woh Kaun Thi.
Even "meghame meghame" & "yaarathu sollamal..." are copied tunes.

since the VJ fever is yet to die down, I just wished to add one more point.
In the song "teli manchu karigindi prabhu" from the movie "Swathikirnanam" (telugu), has sung the word Prabhu very beautifully in one stanza. She sings the "u" in Prabhu at a high note and slides it down very well.
Moreover her breath control in "aanathi neeyara","brocheva..." and "neen kettal" is so awesome.... that it leaves me breathless too :-)

Hi AVR,
Jaidev had not copied IR songs...Did you really read my message??
You have to listen to Neerada Neram Nalla Neram from the tamil film Vaira Nenjam...It is a song in which VJ hits the high notes and goes even higher!! It is quite astounding what she can do with her voice - and all so effortlessly.
Yaar Nee was a remake of Woh Kaun Thi, BTW. Have you hear the VJ-SPB duet from the film Neeya? It is the remake of the film Nagin (Reena Roy-Sunil Dutt) and Shankar-Ganesh give you the tamil version of "Tere Sung Pyar Mein" - the song goes "Ore Jeevan Ondre Ullam..." Another good one is a duet by the same team -VJ-SPB, in the film Osai (remake of Shor) where the Lata-Mukesh duet "Ek Pyar Ka Naghma" becomes "Oru Paadal Naan Ketaen..."
Leave it to Shankar-Ganesh to turn Hindi hits into Tamil Hits!!

Naaz:
(1)No I was asking whether IR had copied the tunes from Jaidev. I am a bit confused :-((
(2)Yes the Vaira Nenjam solo is quite good.
(3)However I am quite curious to listen to the Tamil version of "ek pyaar ka naghma hai". I love this song - not one of Lata's best in the 70s - but the sweetness in her voice will give me goosepimples.
(4)Though Yaar Nee was a remake, I wondered if it was necessary to steal all the tunes.
(5)Another set of songs existing both in Tamil and Hindi are the ones from Mughal-e-Azam (Hindi) and Akbar (Tamil) - not copied but recycled by Naushad. Okay I should stop digressing too much:-)

avr: you evidently haven't heard of vedha - He had a small industry going copying hindi film hits into tamil - typically, late 60s/early 70s for Jaishanker/Ravichandran movies. Teesri Manzil, Caravan, Jewel Thief,.... there are tamil versions of all these and more. The one or two rare original scores are quite good (paarthiban kanavu), which makes one wonder why he resorted to copying.
Akbar is the tamil dubbing of mughal-e-azam. Naushad a couple years back re-recorded the tamil songs (not sure if he cleaned up the old recordings or used fresh voices), but these have apparently not been released commercially.

Yes indeed I havent heard enough of Veda. In fact my exposure to TFM is very recent. I have heard only the most famous songs.
It seems like Veda and Shankar Ganesh were expert copiers.

Recently in Kannada, VJ had sung most of the songs for the movie "Neela" directed by popular director Nagabharana. The songs are very good and popular.

Is Vani getting more oppportunities to sing in Kannada films after Neela? Does anyone know?

I don't think so. Because nowadays most of the kannada songs are copied from Tamil and Telugu. Kannada film music industry is not good as it was. Localites are encouraged well in KFM.

GR:
What do u mean by this statement? Is it that KFM industry is biased towards singers of Kannada origin???

avr: I don't use the word biased. Outsiders have their own share here. But we could see more number of new kannada singers. They are welcomed and encouraged. I don't find anything wrong with this.

Are there any private devotional albums by VJ in Tamil. I would gladly appreciate info on this (along with links preferrably.)
Has she sung ever with MS Subbalaxmi,MLV or BMK?

There is wonderful (actually, divine) tamil album by VJ - all songs in praise of Krishna - called "Gokula Gaanam" It is available on the Sangeetha Music label. There is also another Ayyappa Devotionals album with KJ Yesudas. The music label is Meltrack (Murugappa Electronics). I don't recall the title of the album. P Suseela and VJ have an album together called Meeravin Geethangal (Meera's Songs) - another album from the Sangeetha Label. Hope this helps you in your hunt
Just a rejoinder to G.Raghavan: I am glad to hear that Kannada MDs and the general public prefer Kannada singers (or those who are from the Southern part of India). I wish the same were the case with Tamil MDs who seem to suffer from Mumbai-itis (yes, it is a kind of malaise, alright) with the Udit-Sadhna-Kavita-Mithali-etc imports who just don't get it. That the tamil public expresses no reservations about these singers tell you a lot about how much pride they take in their own language (and how it ought to be spoken/sung).

ahmad, u r correct. The outsiders among the singers are mostly from TFM only (who willn't kill the pronounciation more as the northies do).

Naaz:
Thanks a lot for all the info u have given me over the past month. I have written to Vani's company asking for a few tapes, and I'll write again for the Tamil devotional albums u have mentioned. (I am quite curious to listen to the PS-VJ combination. I am sure it'll be EXCELLENT).
However I do have a bad habit of being a bit too persistent with objections :-)

Hey - ARR, ILayaraja and the rest all know the Sa Re Ga of music.
So maybe thats why they take Kavita K and Alka and Sadhana and Mitali and Preeti Uttam who are all trained in classical. And I am sure IR and ARR all know a word or two about Tamil diction. And the Tamil public knows Tamil too. Thats why the songs of Kavita.......asha........... are ALL superhits :-)))
NOM whatsoever.
