Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

kik 'haisiyat'(jeetu and jayapradha) had a beautiful solo 'dheere dheere subah hui jaag uti zindagi'(Music Bappi Lahri). There are 2 versions , one by VJ and other by Yesudoss.
IMO VJ was better than KJY. One of the few good songs by Bappi Lahri

The movie Pakeezah had almost totlaly 12 songs sung by Lataji,Raajkumari,Vani Jairam,Suman Kalyanpur,Mehndi Hassan,Shobha Gurtu and Parween Sultana that were used only in the background.
(all these besides the famous songs which were there in the film by LM and Rafi.)
The VJ song is composed by Naushad. It is "mora saajan soutan ghar jaaye,ab mein kaise kahoon..." - its one of the few hindi songs by VJ that I have really loved.

In that first song, VJ has imitated a child REAL WELL. So Janaki is not the ONLY mimicry artist in the South, right? Or was that song by Janaki :-((

In Malayalam,VJ has sung a few songs for Salil Chaudhary - a composer whom I really respect.
BTW the "thiruvona" song is quite good.

I am a fan of VJ. She can sing all kinds of songs. classical, dappanguthu etc.. My favorite ones are. Each one is kinda different
1) Karisal tharisu kazhani acchu - Achhamilai Acchamillai
2) Sugamaana Raagangalae - Miruthanga chakravarthi
3) Pudhu Rosaa poove - (Forgot the movie. VJ sings for Anuradha)
4) Cola cola coco cola - Mangamma Sabadham
5) Kavidhai Kelunngal karuvil - Kamal,Revathi movie

Hi Kik,
You are right. I confused the VJ song with the PS song - and was thinking of another Balachander film....
The song I was thinking of was "Azhagana Ilamangai Katil Koduththaal...."
The film was : Thapputhalangal. Music: Vijayabhaskar.
Another seldom heard VJ song from a Hindi Film:
"Mere Sajna Sung Sung Mujhe Tum Rakhna..."
Film: Wafadaar Music : Bhappi Lahiri
Thanks AVR - I noticed the Bold JAIRAM spelling!
Vani Jairam also has a few Hindi songs in the film Shaque (one with Mukesh) Music: Vasant Desai (his last film )(Shabana - Vinod Khanna starrer - really good film!)
Manjadi Kunnil....from the malayalam film Manjil Virinja Pookkal is also a good duet with KJY.

Hi,
There is another good duet with Manna Dey from the film Parinay:
The song is "Mitwa Mitwa Mere Man Mitwa Aaja Re Aaja Re..." Music: Jaidev?
Has anyone heard VJ's Ghazal album (music Murali Mohan Swaroop) titled :Parvaaz (HMV)?
"Ki Zamane Ne Jafa" and "Tere Mariz-e-gham thuje pukarte chale gaye..." are fantastic.

I had heard those ghazals on TV. One was "yeh shaam dekho chandan si mehki". But no, that was the REAL VJ. I have somehow enjoyed only her southern songs. Those ghazals though well sung, somehow fall behind in terms of pronounciation IMHO.Thats why i havent fully liked her Raghunath Seth albums.
You seem to be very well informed on film music in general - quoting Parinay - a rare movie. Yes the music is by Jaidev. Are u a film critic (if I may know)? In fact there is a song of hers with Mukesh for RD BURMAN in a movie called Chhalia.

AVR,
I am somewhat perplexed by the whole "pronuniciation" issue: I am a Urdu/Hindi speaker myself - and as far as I can tell I don't see a problem with VJ's Hindi - on the contrary, I find it to be properly enunciated and studied - the diction and timbre closer to "chaste" than many other singers...The pronunciation debate is one that is conveniently pulled out of the hat as "marginalising" feature when it comes to VJ's Hindi songs. Ask any scholar about her Hindi pronunication - and they'd be sure to say that she is RIGHT on (BTW I taught Hindi for many years at the Univ.)
Yes, I have written widely on Cinema, Indian Film Music and Culture.
"Pyar Kabhie Kam Na Karna Sanam" is another duet with Kishore from the film Ek Mutthi Aasman (?)

Vani Jairam had a sold-out concert at the Lincoln Centre, Manhattan New York in June 2000. It was phenomenal. I met her - and she invited me for a coffee after the show along with the organisers and her husband Jairam.
A truly humble, unassuming and articulate person she is. Amazingly respectful and considerate.

Have u studied music too?
I was just curious BTW to know about the Raagas used in ezhu Swarangalukkul & kelviyin naayagane. I have no technical knowledge of music myself. Was just wondering which raagas those songs are based on 9I know its more than one, becoz sometimes I manage to guess them out. Like the use of darbari raag in keviyin naayagane). Who is the other singer in the 2nd song?

Yes, and before I forget - I need a link to her song "mangala kannagi" very badly. I have heard LOTS ABOUT it.

Just one more thing - before I end today's session after a tiring day - I have heard that she is a polyglot. Naaz probably u are the best person to confirm.
It is said she could recognize raagas at the age of 2 itself!!
Also Naaz, u were asking about the uniqueness aspect of her voice - I wud say "range" is one feature. She sounds very effortless at very high pitches too. We can take her "dhorakuna ituvanti seva" for instance, or "elluil engo" or "bhaava vemba hoovu arali".
Its her range that has made her my MOST favourite singer (inspite of that one issue which we disagree upon :-)). And the fact is her voice has not really tired with age. She still sounds very beautiful in Neela (she is probably 55?).

on: Thu Nov 1 12:43:52 EST 2001
Yes AVR, she is 56 now
The song 7swarnanglukkul is based on Ragamalika (Pantuvarali, Khamboji, sindhu Bairavi and khamboji)
The second singer in Kelviyin is BS Sasireka.
I have not heard of Mangala Kannagi...is that the title of the song - or the name of the album?
what is the ONE issue we disagree about....??
Have a good night (it is daytime - 9.30 - here!!!)

The Mangala kannagi song in Thaaliya salangaiya is a very powerful song rendered by VJ. Another pwerful solo by VJ is the veru idam thedi poovaloo-in the movie sila nerangalil sila manidhargal.
Couple of years back she sang a duet with Jayachandran in one of Doordharshan's prog . -the song azhaghu azhaghu -the same one that appeared in the movie Pudhiya mugham (MD AR rehman-she didn't sing the film version). The one that appeared in the film had the same lyrics but a diff. tune. The doordharshan version appeared much before the film one.
Again in doordharshan she sang a song in kashmiri lang.
Coming back to her hindi songs she had sung a duet with yesudas-the song begins like this goriya..I don't remember the name of the movie.

The movie you are thinking of is Solva Saal (remake of the tamil 16 Vaiyathinile - in hindi it was Sridevi and Amol Palekar). The music for the film was by Jaidev.
"Pee Kahan" was a good solo in that film. Of course, there will be comparisons with SJ's tamil version of that song - Sendhurapoove....which would really prove nothing as it will not be judging the song on its OWN terms. That, of course, is a perennial (and if I may say so, rather short-sighted) problem in fora like these.
Naaz
PS: Where on the net can I find the song from Thaliya Salangaiya?

Naaz: 16 vayadhinile remake was solva saawan, right? Are you saying Jaidev copied IR's tune and it didn't come off as well or that he created a new tune that people may compare to senthoorappoove? I didn't know Jaidev copied tunes.
