We have heard MS Visvanathan sing, we have also heard Ilayaraaja sing. We have had our fair share of AR Rahman's skilled voice and also were forced to put up with Deva's singing at times.
I shouldn't fail to mention SA Rajkumar and Maragathamani although they haven't sang much.
Karthik Raja sings too, as does his younger brother Yuwan. Ramana Gokula sang in "Badri".
WHO among all these music directors are the BEST SINGERS?

Its ARR for me. I thought he could sing only high-pitched gems like Mustafa or Columbus. But Dil Se Re.. was outstanding. The shift between high and low was incredible. In my opinion, it is the BEST song ever composed and sung.

Sridhar,
I think you have mentioned your liking about this song before. I too like the song very much and am amazed by the shift from low pitch to high pitch of the song. I heard it in hindi first. And, I used to hear the whole album atleast 10 times a day, when it was released. I thought, in tamil, they will kill the song, because, I couldn't immagine any tamil lyric suiting that songs flow. But, VM had done a commendable job in that film and I need not tell you here, everybody knows what "Dil Se"/"Uyire" means to FM lovers.
But, my vote for a best singer cum MD will go to SPB. His sigaram is a marvellous piece of work.

Hello Common Friend,
I know you would never say IR's name even where it is the only name qualifying!
SPB's part as a MD is very small. He can be given a place maybe in a thread called, "Who is the best Music Director of all the Singers?"
Common Friend, please live to your nickname!

No I won't say. Because, long before in some other thread I commented about IR's voice harshly. I don't change my opinion very often. Infact, I firmly beleive that he lacks shruthi in his voice. Again , I did not say the arr IS A GREAT SINGER EITHER. I was talking about that one song. I don't want to com[pare IR vs ARR singing qualities.
BTW, have you ever in your life, dream etc. acknowledged ARR.
I found your name opposite to the word BIAS in a dictionary.
Okay...Don't get upset. The last line was just for a joke. Nothing serious. I know you are a great fan of IR. I don't want to question that.

Infact there was not even the word ARR in that posting.
This is FYI

Common Friend,
I think you don't understand the basics of music at all! "Shruthi Matha Layam Pitha" is what all learned ones say!
Do you think a man with no shruthi in His voice can satisfy a great deal of Carnatic Doyens like Semmangudi Sreenivasa Iyer and get the title, 'Nadhabrahmam' from them? Do you not acknowledge Semmangudi either? Then you are not at any useful point in arguing!
BTW, I have acknowledged ARR in few songs in which I know he is at his best but they are nothing compared to even the worst of IR (if something like that exists) !!

ha ha! there i see an update to websters coming up!
Vijay! I just want to say this! remember this posting very well! and never ever argue critisize anyone who trashes IR. U have just lost the qualification to do so and this goes for any HCF of "x" MD

Vijay:
shruthiyE illaamal paadak kooadiya aLavukku IR mOsamillai. Given his immense knowledge I am sure he can find out even the slightest of blurs in the songs. But, IMO, that is only for other singers. After he sings, he may realize that he has gone off shruthi ( One good example is punnagaiyil minsaaram..bayangara loss of shruthi) and try to rectify too through repeated recordings. But basically his voice is not as stable as SPB or any other great singer. Hence anga inga shruthi pOgaththaan seyyum however hard he tries.
Nobody says he/she does not like the songs IR has sung. But if there is a fact, we have to accept it.

Who is the best SINGER of all the Music Directors?
Does this mean who is the best singer a MD worked with? (Again in my opinion a good combination)
IR - KJY, SPB, SJ, Chitra.
ARR - HH, Unni
(OR) out of all MDs who has good voice? My order of preference.
IR
ARR/YSR
KR (some are bad and some are OK but no near to good)
Vidya Saagar
Maragatha Mani
Deva (unsahihable)
SAR (ditto)
IMHO there is no best as it varies with emotions, renditions, pitches (high/low) etc., For every self he might be best even :-)

Bharath,
Can you please use some words which I can understand? I am not qualified enough in English to understand your hi-fi language!
MS,
Why are you trying to universalise your subjective feelings? I personally know many carnatic musicians who strongly say that there is no shruthi loss in IR's voice!

"Until today, I knew that Shri Ilayaraaja is a great film music director - his expertise in diluting Carnatic Ragas without subsuming their native merits, is well known to me - but today I had the oppurtunity to listen to him sing a few kirthanas - he sang a kirthana in Raag Abhogi - very well rendered - in Carnatic Sangeet, one needs to know the Sahityam - without knowing it, one should not sing it making it sound absurd - Isai gyani Shri.Ilayaraaja sang it very beautifully and his grasp of the Sahityam is commendable. After today, I realise that Shri.Ilayaraaja is a thorough expert in Carnatic music also. May the God Almighty bless Isai Gyani with a long life so that he can render a long service to music"
- Doyen of Carnatic music Shri.Semmangudi Srinivasa Aiyer
Do you think the above statement is a joke, Bharath and MS?

Its really surprising. I feel the exact same way as you - except that I interchange ARR with IR.
And I am stunned at the way you comment about other listeners when you are as biased as they come. I know I am biased, but dont go commenting on others on how they dont praise ARR.

I know you are not qualified enugh in english and b.t.w thanx a lot of confessing that honestly;-)!
but I think you are now qualified enough to say you have contradicted yourself.
anyway there cannot be a more biased IR fan in this forum than you! so I am saying that you have NO qualification to accuse another person of being biased.

Bharath,
When someone says that he is an IR fan, you think it is a bias. I have substantial proof for all my postings yaar! I am basically an IR fan who acknowledges any MD when they show in any song that they have worked well. It includes ARR too. That is what I meant and you get hot saying that I have NO qualification to comment on you. Once again, I am not biassed but if you feel so, it is your fault.
My postings have no contradictions. I am clear enough to have a one-to-one arguement with you with substantiate evidence. I am not a pointless pleader like you!
BTW, before commenting on my English, you better learn the spelling of 'Enough' (not enugh)!
Hahaha :-)

Bharath and sridhar,
First try to see the facts.
vijay has posted a comment of shri srinivasa iyer on IR.Do you think he would say anything just like that?Or you think you are all greater experts in carnatic music. if you think so or
if you are really, then i take back my words.
Pesarthukku enakku right kadaiyaathu because
i'am not literate as far as carnatic music is concerned.I read the above comment in raajangahm long back and till now I never knew that people
are wiser than srinivasa iyer in this forum.
i have been under a misconception all these
days that there is shuthi in IR's singing.
